...We built a door that was too thick for the doorframe, and too heavy for most hinges to handle...but we tried to hang it anyway! We're rushing to complete the cabin interior for Christmas. Will the door work? Will we finish in time for Christmas? You'll just have to see for yourself!

Thank you! 😄 Yes, it's a mash-up that seems to work quite well! European medieval meets Canadian pioneer. I've always loved the look of hand forged wrought iron on a heavyset wooden door. To me, the medieval style communicates a sort of stately strength, which I believe complements the character of the cabin.

Depending on the age of your daughter, I'd spend Christmas at the cabin anyway; would make for great memories. We "camped" in our 18th Century Farmhouse, sleeping in sleeping bags cooking on a stove, my wife pregnant, and then20 years later did it again in an older house in Bordeaux, again in sleeping bags, our son helping this time. Now both places are "modern comfortable," but nothing will ever take away those first Xmas memories when we started out....Love watching....cheers...rr Normandy, France

Yep, but the top of the walls are still open to the exterior, it is lacking lots of insulation unfortunately, not mentioning the floors are going to be awfully cold too (for children at least and his wife's health is maybe not strong enough too). They could easily face -20 temperatures soon, so... A fun cabin for hanging out, maybe a hot cocoa, but not much than that for now. This is turning out to be a great build though!

Fun fact; door nails were traditionally hammered into doors to prevent anyone using an axe to break in. The nails were bent over (or clenched) on the inside to secure them. Having been bent over they could not be re-used which is where the expression "Dead as a doornail" comes from 😁 Good to see the cabin nearing completion. Great Job. Happy New Year.

One thing to consider, when sanding inside like that with a fire going, is that there is the potential to create an explosive atmosphere with the dust suspended in the air. Once you cross the LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) all it would take is one spark and the cabin would be instant kindling. Coal dust explosions have sunk many ships and destroyed many buildings in years gone by. Limestone dust can explode, aluminium makes a wonderful bomb as does just about anything in powder form.

To see how explosive it can be do a fun science experiment. Take a funnel with long plastic hose. Put some flour in the funnel. Place a burning candle next to the funnel. Put large coffee can over the funnel and candle. Stand back and blow into the tube. The flour goes into the air and will explode and blow the coffee can into the air. They were very lucky sanding with the fire going.

Great job... It's also nice to see a father son relationship like you and your dad have... I don't remember my dad at all as he passed away when I was 5 years old, so I never had a father figure in my life... You are richly blessed... I would also like to encourage you to go to the cabin for Christmas anyway... it would make joyous memories beyond compare... now that I lost my mom this year it gave me a whole new perspective on time... we do not know just how many days each of us are given.... it's important to make the most of each and every one... May the Lord bless you and your family during the Christmas season...

If you would be like my father, he hand-dug a full basement under the house I was raised in. Of course, this was in the early 1950s. Mom helped him. He did this while working as a machinist as a full-time job, working from 4:00 in the afternoon until 12:00 midnight. It was not a small basement either, probably 30' X 40'. I think the ceilings were 7.5' high. I look back on it in total amazement. He came from an age where you did for yourself, just like you and your dad. Treasure him, always! I did and I treasure my memories of my dad, always.

Cabin Door looks great.. My heart goes out to your wife with what she's been having to endure. I've be suffering from a Chronic back injury for over twenty five years. Have had to take fentanyl and hydromorphone since then as well. I've been suffering tremendously, but through it all I've always believed that God was Going to heal me some day, or some how. I've studied every book out there on the topic of healing. I've learn to be diligent to abide in his presence and learn how to wait upon him. And through it all I've suffered tremendously. There's been times I've been overwhelmed and think at times that He was never going to heal me. The discouragement got the best of me. Well as of late He's slowing beginning to heal me bit by bit little by little. I say this to tell your wife not to give up but to continue to trust in Him, He truly is our healer. Through the one in whom He has sent Jesus Christ. God bless and have a great Christmas brother.

Sorry to hear that you will not be able to have the Christmas you had hoped and planned for at the cabin. Sometimes "life happens" and throws a spanner into the works. But I hope you will visit as a family - perhaps with an "indoor Christmas picnic" and enjoy sitting around the woodstove in the beautiful setting. You have done a magnificent job at the cabin - you - and your Dad too - should be justly proud. And all the finishing work that is to come will only add to the quality and perfect ambience of the cabin. It is a truly wonderful thing. Your cabin is so beautiful and well built; a gem to be appreciated for the next many generations. Maybe after it is totally finished you and your wife can take some private time and enjoy that magical cabin. Getting close to Christmas now, so wishing you, your father and total family a very warm, safe and happy Christmas.

Just wanted to say that my beloved wife got me a red "ThruNight" TT20 flashlight for Christmas only and all because of you and your endorsements. It's everything you've been saying it is (which is reassuring). AND it's got your logo on it! Which is tremendously cool! As delighted as that makes me, my joy is paled knowing the trial y'all are experiencing with your wife's health. I pray fervently that He wills a miraculous recovery. A thing surely well within His ability since our Lord is all-powerful. So, whenever one prays, go ahead and "Swing for the fences!"

Hello friends, I loved watching the video in which father and son hard build the cabin of your dreams, I loved it so much it was a lot of work but it was worth it the cabin was very good and now the installation of the door, and the lack of space between one side and another one from the box, this made the door lock and not open when pulling, I soon realized that the door was going to lock, I was a civil builder and I also did all the construction work as well as the electrical part and installation of the doors, which was strange to you. they only put latches as a lock on the inside but and when you leave the house the house will be exposed to anyone who wants to enter but wait what you still remember that security on the door is also required outside, hugs, congratulations, this one hut is the dream of each one of us, but not all of us can build one, in addition to having to buy the land which is very expensive, it is not for anyone and you used the best of machines, tools and materials for coverage n It became a monster, very good ♥️

Senior and Junior Outsider, I've been waiting in anticipation for the video that you were in the cabin for Christmas. I'm sad to hear that you didn't make it for Christmas. It is however more important to spend more time with Mrs. Outsider, I truly hope she's improving, even if it's only a bit at a time. I hope it's much more than that. Hopefully you could be moved into the cabin for Easter or sooner? I think that might be a reasonable expectation for you, but no pressure to reach it. Make sure Mrs. Outsider has you when she needs you, family is what always matters most. Mrs. Outsider, lots of blessings and prayers for you and your family that you will improve and be able to return to a better daily way. Much love for you all! XOXOXOXO Merry Christmas, Keep Safe Always, Matt - Toronto, Canada

The cabin is looking beautiful and that door is perfect! Even if the cabin isn't finished by Christmas, you could still camp there pretty comfortably...that would be a REALLY rustic Christmas! And Merry Christmas to you and yours...and a very happy and healthy New Year. 😀❤💞

In the old days when the West was being settled a family would have loved a door like that to keep trouble out and bad weather. Shutters over the windows too.... your cabin looks "Bullet Proof" so to speak! You did an awesome job ...

Solid construction. Its been a pleasure to watch your team together. Solid door construction worthy of an ark. My bad is Window vs 200 lbs door. No need for a lock. Shelter and respect for those who need it most of times of dire.

Been rolling the thought over in my head about something else for you. I thought if you dug carefully and reinforced it a good bit, a root cellar with in cabin access might be an interesting addition to make at some point in the future. Likewise the closing in of the surround of the crawlspace is a good idea. Better though to have dug out a deeper crawlspace area to begin with, but hindsight is always clearest and time is no obstacle to wishful thinking.
