Key is to build capacity and agency in the process. Meditating helps to bring us back into our bodies and for some our bodies aren’t safe which can be destabilizing. Mae was right to say play with it in small bites. 1 min at a time 💛

Hey Mae. I do a moving meditation. I listen to the Calm podcast while I do a simple activity like making my bed or folding washing. Its also nice to meditate on a walk. Just try to be present and notice as much about your surroundings as you can.

Mae if you’re adhd or autistic or both your old therapist is correct. Meditation can be harmful if the goal is to completely silence your mind because that’s not something neurodivergent people can do. So meditation in the traditional sense may not be good for you but meditation can be more than just sitting in silence.

I get it with a channel where this is their entire career, but you all have very well paid careers away from this podcast. Seated meditation is contraindicated for those in active PTSD, or currently experiencing trauma... basically, if your body and nervous system feel unsafe and are sending the message, "RUN!," and you make yourself sit still for twenty minutes... you can make yourself feel less safe. Trauma sensitive yoga and meditation teacher here. 👋

again, this podcast brightens my week, guaranteed! ❤ and on meditation, there are a lot of free apps online just setting a timer and following your breath for three minutes it's hard enough. Another way to find more presence is to practice being fully present (totally focussed and not thinking on past or future) when you are doing a daily activity like brushing your teeth or washing the dishes.

Hey Mae - I've got a mind like yours, but I'm an old girl now and the meditation that has most helped me has no mantra, you just your breath (in.... out...) as a focal point, and the goal is NOT to rid your mind of thoughts (impossible), you just let them come and let go of them over and over. I've used the recordings of Jon Kabat Zinn's guided meditation (both seated and lying down) - SUPER helpful and doable. You can probably find and download online. Can start with like 5 minutes and build up to 20 over time if you like. Adore Handsome and deeply love all your work Mae! 💛💛

Oh I know the phrase! It's actually kinda like a folk story? The phrase is "塞翁失馬，焉知非福“, and what you explain is correct. You never know what seems like a loss might be a gain.

I believe you cannot stop “ thinking.” That’s your brain’s ( mind) purpose. But if you can relax in whatever comfortable position is good for you and just allow random thoughts to pass through but not obsess about a particular thought. If you can divert a thought you may find obsessive or recurring and you cannot just “ let it rise up and now leave” then perhaps you can figure out how to ease into the enjoyment of the meditation. My point is- don’t worry about trying to “ stop thinking” but to be the observer. It takes practice but you may find a whole new level of spiritual intuition you hadn’t planned on. This takes time and patience.

Mae, try guided meditation. As a fellow ADD brain, the visualizations help give your brain a place to go. There are a lot of cheesy ones out there though, you have to fish for one that feels right.
