It's so annoying because I'll be like, oh, you're starting a business? I wanna support you! Then you realize it's Scentsy or Mary Kay or Pampered Chef or LulaRoe or Ozempic or DoTerra or Kangen Water or Amway or.... And there are so many at farmer's markets with stalls. I don't think I've ever had someone tell me about a business they're starting that's an actual business. I'm a brick and mortar girl now. Gotta be able to walk into their store.

As a woman with autism, I felt like I was targeted and exploited by the other women in my church group; I was trusting and naïve, truly believing they were my friends, when really I was just a mark. After saying No to their parties and messages, I was suddenly invisible to them. They wouldn’t even say hello at church. I was so hurt, and it has really affected my trust, especially amongst church members. I now feel like EVERYONE has a motive. I hope to one day be able to make friends and TRUST people again.

Hannah, I am right there with you about seeking out male approval for makeup! Why is that the ultimate goal? Men aren’t the main characters of reality. We're always told "Men this, men that"... Listen people: women don't exist for men. Period. If a man doesn't like my haircut, I don't give a sh*t. "You will please to men" is one of the worst sentences ever. Your first goal in making yourself look good is to please you. It's your body. You're the first one that has to find it beautiful.

The Mary Kay Story was so frustrating. The manipulation was on a different level. Lying to them about winning a raffle in hopes that a large bridal party would equal lots of sales. Also tricking them into being a part of a business presentation by telling them they just happen to have a team meeting before the facial. And it’s not even a real facial experience. Super shady.
@EmmaThw

That Mary Kay story where the poor girl got a rash around her eyes reminds me of my friend's step-sister. Her step-sister is older by a couple of years and is a huge anti-MLM advocate due to a terrible experience in her teenage years. Turns out she "won" a Mary Kay facial and got herpes from one of the products. Now, like she always says, herpes is incredibly common and she may have gotten it from sex or even kissing eventually, but getting it from makeup during an already uncomfortable experience at the young age of 14 was just incredibly traumatic. Nowadays she's a makeup artist and offers discounts to people who have had bad experiences with MLM makeup and she has an increasingly large clientele made up largely of ex-MLM huns and people who were screwed over by MLM products.

that whole experience reminded me of the time I got a makeover at a Merle Norman (it was a gift from my grandmother)! They're not an MLM but the experience itself reminds me of mine and completely turned me off of that company, to the point that I've always associated it with the likes of Mary Kay in terms of product quality and style. The lady completely caked my face, used the most egregious blue eyeshadow, bright pink blush, and didn't even use any setting powder so the foundation and blush just... sat on my face and was like an oil slick. I was like, 14 years old, and I looked like a circus clown. I hate using that phrase to describe other people's makeup because makeup is self expression and I don't judge people's self expression but like.. I looked horrific. I immediately went home and washed it off, and my skin also burned so much, not to the extent of being visible, but I have very dry skin and too much makeup definitely irritates it, even now. She even noticed that, because she zapped me with a gadget and told me my skin was very dry but she did nothing to soothe it or prime it before going to town. I also was fat, so I definitely relate to the experience of being pressured to "look pretty". And herpes is no joke. I've struggled with oral herpes since I was a child, presumably because of my mother, and that also really added to the pressure of facial beauty (not to mention the rampant stigma, as well as the fact that it's just plain awful to deal with an outbreak). I'm so glad that your friend's step-sister is able to provide those services, that's really great and I'm happy for her!

I posted this in another reply, but in my experience, people who work in makeup stores don't always know either lol my experience happened when I was 14 in a Merle Norman (which because of this experience, I've always associated their style and products with the likes of Mary Kay, whether that's factual or not I don't know because I've never bothered to check in on that brand). Completely slathered my dry af skin with foundation and creme blush, no setting powder, eyeliner eyebrows, bright blue eyeshadow, bright pink blush... it was like an oil slick on my face that I immediately washed off at home, and dealt with the burning skin thing after too. It turned me off from in store makeovers to this day, although I think I had an unfair bias against makeup companies and their employees lol. I don't mean that generally they don't know what they're doing, I just had one bad experience as a kid and it ruined makeup for me for a long time

Story 2. Thanks to your contributor for filling in more detail to the Vemma story. The more I learn about BK Boreyko (the unnamed CEO in the story) and Vemma, the more I am convinced that the FTC goes after MLMs SELECTIVELY, focusing on companies that openly thumb their nose at the feds, as Boreyko did. The same goes for Jay Noland and Success By Health. The lesson for the rest of the industry is to avoid pissing off the FTC and everything will be fine. That's a shame.

Tangentially related about people donating a portion of the proceeds to a charity: if you're planning to donate to a charity through a drive. Just donate to the charity directly. Please. I understand the appeal of donating to a drive with a lot of other people, BUT middlemen always cause issues in one way or another, its a PR move most likely, and it gives said middleman a tax write off.
@teijaflink2226
@teijaflink2226 7 ай бұрын
Exactly, I have done it once because I really trusted the person and wanted to help. Back then I didn't know that you actually get a tax write if from donations and that you can pretty much make millions of lots of people donate through you instead of giving directly to a charity. I still feel ashamed and kind of scammed even if I don't quite remember how it looked like.

Chances are really good that it was used because they even said that the mascara must’ve been old because it was clumpy if they were doing these presentations every day and using fresh makeup there’s no way that it could get old and clumpy. Even at places that allow you to try on the make up, they sanitize it every time and then you’re given special applicators so that you’re never using the same mascara wand someone else did.

Back in the early 2000s I used to wander around stores like Ross and Marshall's on my lunch breaks. Women would come up to me all the time and compliment me on my skin. This freaked me out, but I would simply say thank you and try to move on. They would always follow me and ask me if I'd ever considered microdermabrasion. Why would they think I wanted microdermabrasion if they thought my skin was already nice??? I've never heard of a microdermabrasion MLM, but I have to think this was what they were pushing.

Listening to the Mary Kay story (#3) reminds me of one of the many experiences I've had with Mary Kay. I don't even remember who the party was for, but I do remember it was a bride. I love all the girly things and facials, but I don't want to go somewhere to do my own skin care, slather on makeup, then have to go home and do my skin care once again. As someone with a TON of allergies and a super sensitive face, I had the same issues. The "microdermabrasion" was making my face feel like it was on fire. The rep got annoyed and just hushed me, telling me to wash it off early if I couldn't handle it. She was already mad at me because she wanted me to take off my mascara and I refused. I'm very brand specific on mascara and NEVER let anyone see me without it. Did that once before and I looked so awful I almost cried at how ugly I looked from what they made me do. I'm super insecure with my appearance and didn't want anyone to see me without my lashes and brows colored in since they are so light that I look like I have no brows or lashes. None of the colors worked. I have so many experiences with Mary Kay MLM huns that I just need to write and submit my story to you. None of those huns know what colors look right on others. They went around many years ago stating that one lipstick (Shell, I believe was the name) "looked good on everyone". Nope. Not me. I hate myself in any lip color other than a translucent pink and they tried to get me to buy it when I looked ridiculous in it. I looked like I was exiting clown school instead of a "makeup party". Their products smell like they've lived in an old lady's garage for years in the Florida heat, are filled with allergens, and have all the worst colors. These reps would make more money by investing in school to become a real makeup artist and/or aesthetician than be a wannabe that scams young brides.

Hannah you are so right about how crushing a bad makeup job can make you feel. I already don’t wear a lot of makeup but for my hs graduation my mother wanted to do my makeup (i was already feeling terrible cause of what i had to WEAR to the ceremony so makeup honestly would not help) and when my mother finished and i saw my face in the mirror i wanted to scream and claw my face off. in all honesty the job she didn’t wasn’t /bad/ but the look was nothing i wanted it felt wrong on me. it probably didn’t help that she was constantly talking about how i would “look good in the photos” because of the makeup, which yeah did NOT help my already crippling low self esteem back then. wearing makeup i didn’t like on me FOR someone else is not a good feeling. years later i’ve discovered a look that i actually like and looks good on me (still light makeup which is what i prefer) and i wear it because I want to and I think i look good with it on. kinda sucks it took years to heal and figure that out but thats life i guess

The one and only time I went to a MK "makeover" party, the first product turned my sensitive skin (used to Clinique) beet red. I can still feel the burn. This was back in the 80s. Hannah- my mom used to buy me those IT works wraps when I was a minor b/c she wanted me to lose weight and while they do “work” by making you sweat and lose water weight you would get the same temporary results from using plastic wrap. And the results are really temporary like not even a day and barely noticeable. I obviously didn’t know any better when I was younger but as I got a little older I started refusing all of the diet products from multiple MLM’s my mom tried to get me to take and when I stopped this I actually LOST weight by eating normally & exercising. (Shocking I know 🙄). Just thought I would share a little tidbit from my experience!

Haha Zeke sounds like my baby. I always have to pause and wonder if he’s awake or if it’s Zeke’s meowing. Love listening to you narrate these MLM horror stories. I enjoy listening to them while doing chores or if I need a soothing voice to coax me to sleep. I’m glad you have so many stories to last many many episodes!

I can provide a little context on the lularoe fundraiser. I used to be in some lularoe groups and purchased some items MANY years ago before becoming anti-mlm. What they would do is have a party or like a week long event, and every item purchased during that time would have an amount that would be donated and then lularoe would match that amount. So let's say it was a dress that was like $50, when someone purchases it, $5 would go to the fundraiser and lularoe would donate an additional $5 (meaning for every dress sold, $10 would be donated). The money was only donated if items were purchased, so it was still benefitting the company, but you could raise a few hundred to a few thousand depending how many items were sold.

the proof of cold messaging thing is common for color street huns. It usually means that your upline now has contact info for your entire network of friends and family if you burn out quickly and don’t think carefully about how you screenshot.

I got pulled into a Mary Kay pitch when someone offered a free makeover on Facebook. They made it sound like they were aspiring makeup artist and it would be free as long as we let them use pictures for their portfolio….this place had an actual storefront in a nice part of town and all seemed legit. Until I got there, we were placed at tables with products in front of us and had to do our own facial and makeup. Then we were taken one by one to a back room where we were pressured to make a purchase. I got a foundation and got out of there. I was so annoyed but just got over it

That Mary Kay story reminded me of an experience I also had with their products. One of my friends gave me a sample face lotion to try back when I was younger (one of the little single use packets). I used it and immediately regretted it - my face burned and was red. I think she had various other random samples (her mom sold MK I think). After that I have always avoided Mary Kay - my skin is quite sensitive and clearly their products are not hypoallergenic like they claim. That story was so upsetting though. I didn't realize some MLMs would do pretend giveaways like that, how awful.

I really liked the story from the person who went with her friend Erica (sorry cannot remember the writers name) they capture something really painful and not often spoken about, the ostracization and pain of being singled out by these types of pushers, when you are not their version of thin, don’t have long hair, aren’t white, aren’t straight etc etc, they are fake but pretend to like you despite piling on tons of backhanded compliments singling you out in a vulnerable state, which year washing my face in front of strangers is. It’s so painful and isolating and why I avoid anyone even remotely teasing of mlm live like the plague

I hope person #3 gets the courage to start chatting with people again online. I just think it's awful that the other person was messaging them mostly to get a person in their downline, but that hopefully this bad experience doesn't make them completely shy away from getting to make friends.

One of my high school friends set up one of those Mary Kay "spa nights" for our friend group the night of senior prom as an alternative for getting our makeup done for the dance. This was 20yrs ago so I don't remember much other than the fact that we were the ones putting the makeup on ourselves copying the middle-aged woman leading the group. It looked bland at best and we probably ended up changing it at home before going to the prom. Of course none of us bought anything because we were teens with no money 😂

I’m a bookkeeper and one of my clients had one of those Mary Kay giveaway things in her office. She told me that the rep calls every single person who put their name in the box, and not to do it. She said that her mom decided to have a party, and after the party the rep bad mouthed her mom TO HER, about how much she talked and how annoying she was, and then proceeded to try and get her to have her own party as well!!! She was horrified and said absolutely not and I don’t think she has spoken with her since.

From my experience being in it works in 2017 as a brand new 18 year old, it was a WILD ride and alll the uplines were very culty and took it all extremely serious. They taught us back then to ask for ‘product models’ when they’d actually be signing up for the 3 month mandatory autoship… the way way uplines would get us to cold message copy and paste at minimum 100-200 random people every single day and if you weren’t doing that much they’d kick you out of the team groups and chats, they also wanted us to screenshot any replies we got so that they could send us a message response to copy and paste back to them. So weird now that I’m looking back. When I quit every upline and sideline blocked me on everything .

Usually MK does the “free facial” makeup with little tester cards that have a little bit of powder on them like a sample card. I was tricked into one of these as well and then was naive enough at the time to getting suckered into signing up. But they taught me to apply eyeshadow with the little foam applicators and then blend with a cotton swab!!! 😂 She legit told me to carry a cotton swab everywhere for blending and touch ups. I wish I had a photo of that makeup look. I had berry lipstick chosen for me which does NOT work on me and never has. They said it was beautiful and I could definitely pull off berry lol.

I used to shop Lularoe sales. They used to have a "Roe for the cause" type group. One of the sales hosts would choose a charity to donate sales profits to....so multiple consultants would be in the group & everything they sold they would donate a portion to the charity.

The last story reminded me of a woman I met through an hour exchange program (A time bank: you do x hours of service for someone else in the bank, and you are entitled to the same number of hours of service from other people in the time bank) She was so nice, and I did some work for her. And she seemed intent on staying in contact with me. Then the pitch began: what sort of benefits did my employer offer - and did it offer legal aid? She was working for a company that provided, for a fee, something like health insurance, but for legal problems. I don't know why she was approaching *me,* I was a small cog in a very large company. I think the only reason she joined the time bank was to have access to more people.
