Re: the gynecologist. Yes, it is an ethical violation. She’s in a position of trust. She’s recommending a “supplement” that is not supported by evidenced based practice. If the doctor is trying to recruit- that is a huge ethical violation. If anyone ever experiences something like this- report the doctor to their the state board of health. There will be an investigation into the report. If it’s legitimate, nothing will happen to the doctor. If it’s an ethical or medical practice violation, the doctor will be sanctioned.

Definitely. I'm a Pharmacist and had a Synergy worldwide Hun try to convince me to sell her products as I had mentioned in a nutrition group vitamin D maybe worth it for most people. When I found out the prices and the company I declined saying I ethically couldn't. How can I sell vitamin D for £30 when I can tell someone to buy it for £3 at the supermarket!! And there is no difference in "purity"!!

But it's okay for an OBGn to tell you which pre Natal vitamin to purchase and offer you a prescription or coupon to buy it. All vitamins are unregulated... it's got to be all one way or the other.
@RobynNanae
@RobynNanae 2 жыл бұрын
@@JudithLawrence718 eh, I don’t know. I had a prescribed pre-natal for my second pregnancy, so some certainly are more regulated than OTC brands. I think the difference is that this doctor is making unsubstantiated medical claims and that Juice Plus has caused some major health issues for other people. Plus, it could all depend on the wording JP uses.
@JudithLawrence718
@JudithLawrence718 2 жыл бұрын
@@RobynNanae I think the whole premise of assuming that a product must be bad if an MLM produces it is what bothers me most. Also, if a doctor can prescribe one kind of unregulated vitamin and not another seems like it's too subjective. The same rule of thumb should be applied across the board...don't promote one brand over the other, etc... I'm just playing devil's advocate here as I have no iron in the fire.

I agree. I had a psychologist start trying to peddle supplements from some random woman online. Therapist said she hadn't used them but was thinking about trying it. I was thinking similarly. Supplements don’t have to be “prescribed” but recommended. (However, I am prescribed Potassium and D3 which are readily available for anyone. For cost reason, I have them prescribed so insurance covers it otherwise they were recommended initially.)
@eragonarya225
@eragonarya225 2 жыл бұрын
Physicians can’t even recommend specific prescription medications if they’re receiving money from the manufacturing company; that’s why doctors get tons of merch with drug names on them and lots of fancy lunches (the drug company is spending money on the doctors to encourage prescriptions without directly handing the doctors money for prescriptions). John Oliver did a whole segment on pharma reps and how they try to toe that line as close as possible, if anyone hasn’t seen it and wants to follow a semi-related tangent. I’ve had iron and b-complex supplements recommended to me since I had an anemia scare in high school, the doctors I’ve discussed it with never have specific brand recommendations beyond “mid-tier drugstore brand is probably fine.”

Something I've noticed over the years is that the women who stay in MLMs the longest seem to be the ones who have really supportive, high-earner husbands. I'm almost positive most of them know MLMs are money pits but, like the first story, 'it makes them happy' and gives the wives something to do, so they let it slide.

That is really what I’m getting to. Any doctor schilling MLM products should be subject to a suspension in their medical license. That is beyond unethical! The power difference between a physician and patient is great, and the patient would feel obligated and trusts a doctors recommendation. The doctor only gains incentives from sales/recruitment and the patient could suffer. It's dishonest and scary to not have a doctor look for what is best for the patient and preying on the trust between patient and doctor. That's my take on why doctors should have their medical license suspended for schilling MLM products.

There is a big difference between someone in a trusted position (like a medical professional) 1) recommending a supplement, and 2) recommending a supplement that you personally sell in order to directly benefit. Hard to rule out a conflict of interests. If not illegal, certainly unethical.

My first day at a health insurance company there was this lady who was giving out her card for massage therapy in the break room. Someone must have reported it because management rushed out and asked to meet her outside within minutes. I went back because break was over and was saw the conversation was serious. One minute later management walked in saying she was gone. Management showed they weren’t playing around. It’s sad because she had a legitimate business with licenses. She wasn’t being pushy she just passed her card around for those who showed interest. I feigned interest just to be nice. However I can see how people can get annoyed.

13 years ago, I went to a chiropractor, got an adjustment, and a consultation on how I could make better lifestyle choices. I was young, never heard of MLMs. During my appointment, I was strongly urged to take Melaleuca vitamins. Trusting the advice I was given, I bought a subscription to receive them monthly or something. Later, they told me how I could make make lots of money selling the same stuff. I politely said no because I hate sales (still not suspecting anything), but I continued buying the products, like the cinnamon mouthwash in addition to the vitamins for the next few months. I showed up to work with an empty Melaleuca box to decorate my office cubicle and that's when my kind coworkers had the talk with me about MLMs and I canceled placing orders. Since then, I've been wary of most MLMs selling especially medicinal products and I've seen so many family members and neighbors get sucked into these shady business practices. Yikes! I'm just glad I didn't turn into one of those people ending all their facebook posts with a link to a "life changing" product. I'd rather die than be annoying.

This Amway explanation you gave is spot on. I get approached for MLMs constantly. I work in cellular sales and unfortunately spend hours setting up phones and service for customers... I had a guy come in and REFUSE to give me the name of the company and he kept trying to set up a coffee date with me to talk about his business- which he explained was just selling products online and having freedom and so much income etc etc. The red flags went up, it's hard to say no to people, when you're stuck with them and are also trying to make them happy/sell to them. Once in awhile I brighten up and say "oh, that's an MLM right?" And they just act really confused or get a lot quieter for the rest of the interaction.

OMG! I had an IDENTICAL experience with Vector/CutCo. Same unkept abandoned strip mall vibes, everything. I had no idea what MLMs were at the time, but I just remember feeling like it was so sketchy, even as a new grad without any real professional experience. My parents were also weirded out by the idea that I'd have to purchase my own materials and confirmed with me that I shouldn't take the job. Thank goodness I didn't. It didn't even occur to me that Vector was an MLM until this year... that's over 6 years after the interview!

I had to google "What is a swinger?" to understand this one. Clearly, there are many things that, at my lofty age of 41, I have not yet learned about the world. That said, you'd be hard-pressed to find another 41-year-old who can name more Pokemon than me. Heh heh. :)

Canadian nurse here. I can't prescribe anything, but I do know about ethics in healthcare. Pressing your own opinion on a patient is unethical, so certainly making money off of vulnerable populations (i. e. Any patient, family member of a patient etc.) is highly unethical. Healthcare providers are supposed to protect & help vulnerable populations, not prey on them. Even legitimate treatment options should be presented with pros & cons, as well as the no treatment option. All this should be done as impartially as possible, and the patient encouraged to make the decision that is right for themselves. We are seen as authority figures, so we have to be careful about exerting undue influence, especially in favor of our own biases or opinions.

One time a "friend" of mine called me and asked if I wanted to improve my life. I asked what it was and she refused to tell me. Instead she invited me to go to some seminar with her and when I said I couldn't afford to go because at the time I was looking for a job, she started insulting me and said I'm awful at communicating (I'm actually really good at communicating) and I'll never be able to get a regular job. I was beyond pissed and told her to never call me again. It was probably MLM #387 she was involved with.

Your videos constantly remind me of a parking wars episode that a Mary Kay "consultant" got ticketed for illegally parking somewhere. Her first words were "you're really going to ticket the Mary Kay lady?" I think that particular segment was set in Detroit. I remember thinking "wow, Karen alert" and laughing at her because her reasons for not being ticketed were out of this world. Now, I'm surprised lady didn't start pitching the products to the parking officer (a male, maybe that is why). I understand that parking tickets are expensive ( I got ticketed 6 months ago in Philly and it was over $70). After watching your show, I now kinda feel bad for her because she probably legit thought she was above parking rules and didn't have the money for the ticket.

This isn't an MLM horror story or anything, but last night was the first time I stumbled upon an MLM rep on Instagram, and didn't know it. I've recently got into hair and skin care, which I know is exactly where the MLM Huns hide. Usually, I'm really good at being able to tell who is involved with an MLM. However, this girl just started a few weeks ago, so there wasn't much content for her MLM, yet. (Monat, by the way.) Also, coming across people, with my same hair type and skin challenges as me has been rare. So, I was probably a bit naive because of my excitement to find someone that does. I follow her, and a little while later I see a post on my Instagram feed, it's a video of her putting Monat on her skin and talking about how moisturizing it is. I unfollowed immediately. However, now she probably knows of my existence and I'm just waiting for that dreaded "Hey girl, do you want to be a boss babe?!" text. I know my story is rather boring, but because it was my first experience getting fooled by an MLM Hun's instagram account, I had to share it with y'all 😅

Fire wives in my area do this to each other. ( R+F in particular) They act friendly to you, inviting you over for “play dates” with the kids and then they pitch you. Maybe a few times. And when they get that you’re not interested, they never call you again. 🙄

That Amway story reminds me of when I was at my first job. I was around 19 and one of my coworkers was asking me about how college was going. I mentioned that I was in design and she said that she had a couple of mentors, and she asked if I'd like to meet them. I stupidly said sure cause I thought that it would be related in some way to my field since my coworker was interested in the same things I was. My coworker told me to meet her at the local Starbucks, and when I told my parents what I was doing they were incredibly concerned. I showed up at Starbucks and brought my portfolio of work with me, thinking I was meeting with people related to design. I met her mentors and they were very nice but they asked me some vague questions about if I wanted extra income, if I could read a book in three days that they'd give me, and if I'd be able to meet weekly at these get-togethers I guess the whole mentor group did (I said no to that cause design school is time consuming). I left the meeting feeling really weird, and when I saw my coworker a couple of days later, she asked if I was interested in joining. I said no because the meeting had nothing to do with design and they wouldn't tell me what the company was or anything. I've always wondered what the name of the company was and today I got my wish. It was Amway.

The only time I ever got roped in to an MLM, was in the late 90s, before Internet was super popular, before social media, even before GPS. So I got roped in to vector marketing, at that point where I met them was in a very nice building, so they must’ve changed their practice since then. But also, I did not get a presentation before interviewing and my demonstration kid was free.

The amway story had me SHOOK! and I didn't even realize what happened to me until hearing that story. Back in 2016 I was fresh out of high school when someone I was close to in high school had reached out to me to catch up, talk about life, and tell me about their new business. I thought nothing of it and was super stoked to hang out with a friend who went to college 2-3 hours away from me. He asked to go to a local coffee shop we frequented in HS, which didn't seem weird until I heard this freaking story! The whole situation was so weird because he brought his upline with and they both pitched Amway to me, I felt so uncomfortable the entire time. They tried setting up a video call for later for me to learn more which I ended up getting myself out of eventually. Between 16 credits for school and already having a retail job i loved I just didn't have the time and I'm so grateful they didn't suck me in. But I'm so stinking mad that going to a coffee shop is part of what the instruct you to do. It feels so icky!
