While I heartily agree that Pentatonix’s cover of “Sound of Silence” is amazing, I have to say that “haunting” is a better fit for Geoff Castellucci's new cover of it.

Pentatonix's "Mary did you know" is really great! You really get to hear Kevin (the beatboxer) and Avi (the bass). 😉 I miss those days... Edit: Over 300 likes?! Wow! That's more than I've ever got before! Thanks, everyone! 🥰

I hate that song so much. Basically, “Hey, new mom, did you know you gave birth to a baby who is going to be murdered? But it’ll be this beautiful and glorious thing?” As a mom, if someone were to tell me that, I’d get the hell away from the as fast a possible and go to the police and get my daughter into hiding. It’s such a horrific song that I now can’t stand Pentatonix since they sang about murder as beautiful to a new teen mother.

The "easy come, easy go" right before the l-r pan changes from stereophonic to monophonic, something Queen also did at that point as well.

it's also known as Stereoscopic sound. When one ear hears one thing (or not) while the other hears something different. Technically, all sound is stereoscopic but this is forced for effect and is how Queen did the same section of the song. Also, IT'S KIRSTEN! CURSE-TEN! I forgive you though

There is a song that Pentatonix does that you will absolutely love. It's the quietest song they do and when they sing it live they put their microphones down on the floor, stand in a tight circle facing each other, and sing just for themselves, even with a crowd of thousands. Two of the members of Pentatonix have said it's their personal favorite song to sing. I believe they have to stand physically close to each other in order to get the perfect timing and voice blend that they do. It's a cover of a song by The Rescues called "My heart With You". On the official video when you press play it starts: no delay.

@1:49 is called Panning. It is a mixing and mastering technique in music basically you push the sound to the left or to the right. A similar technique is done in videography where the camera pans from one side of the room to another but the origin of the camera stays the same. Like moving your head left and right to glance across the room
@parlundback1592

The sound effect you are talking about (sound moving from left to right) is called panning. Usually there is a knob labeled "Pan" on a mixer table, turning it will move the actual channel between left and right. Love your reactions btw :)

Ah good I was scrolling through the comments to see if someone had said it already. I actually only learned the term panning from one of the Roomieofficial videos about the music in Encanto bc they worked with it a lot there, you can really tell nicely how the sound travels when the characters are moving, really fun effect to add.

Aloha Hannah, the effect as others pointed out in the introduction is panning, specifically hard panning (as in hard left and hard right). Queen were notorious for using the full stereo spectrum (left to right blend or hard right or left) when mixing their music. If you listen to Somebody to love carefully, you’ll notice certain harmonies were mixed left in the background ‘gospel’ choir vocals, while other harmonies were mixed to the right speaker.

I'm so glad you reacted to this one, Hannah! It's just incredible. They waited for six years before they attempted it because they wanted to do it justice. Brian May from Queen thinks it's one of the best covers of Bohemian Rhapsody ever made. The amazing thing is that they can do this live and Mitch does the guitar solo just with his mouth (the megaphone was just a prop for the video!). Mitch (dark haired counter tenor singing most of the solo on this one) and Scott (tall, blonde baritone) used to have a side channel called Superfruit where they sang covers, amazing originals and did a lot of fun things. From a vocal coach perspective I would love you to react to their version of Defying Gravity which Mitch performed (singing the Elphaba part!) as a birthday present for Scott who is a huge Wicked fan. Scott sings the Glinda part in a really dodgy blonde wig but shows off his range as he goes quite high in his falsetto! Mitch has on very patchy green make-up but he sings it in the original key and with the opt-up part at the end that few Elphaba's attempt. They also do a very fun alcohol-fuelled Frozen medley with Kirstie which I think you would find lots to comment on from a vocal perspective. If you react to either of these remember to watch after the 'subscribe' screen as there are bloopers! In terms of Pentatonix, I would really recommend some of their much under-rated originals. I think you would like 'Run to you' which is haunting and really beautiful, also 'Love again' is amazing EDM-like with a Steampunk/alien vibe and 'Sing' is a real bop and includes lots of their famous actor and KZbinr friends. Can't sleep love, Be my eyes, Coffee in bed and Happy now are also amazing. In terms of covers, Amazing Grace and The Sound of Silence (which are with the Matt - the bass who replaced Avi - the serial killer-stare one in this song! - in 2017). Also I know it's Christmassy, but 'Mary did you know' is gorgeous, though it's an older one. I love watching your reactions, Hannah, more please!

Hannah, I can’t believe you have not yet reacted to this! In any case, the different „location“ of the voices in your headphones is called „panning“. And you can never have enough PTX in your life. It‘s actually good for your health! 😊 Try „Amazing Grace“ or „The Prayer“ by PTX in case you haven’t yet!

The bass is named Avi Kaplan and, in fact, he is an amazing soloist. I would love your reaction to one of his songs

Love love love your videos Hannah. I’m a dreadful singer but I love hearing great voices so much - hence my deep love of Musicals and achapella.(spelling?🤷‍♀️). And Queen. - the switching between speakers is a Queen thing they did on release of the single. I adore Pentatonix - all of them are unreal - Mitch is a phenomenon. Really appreciate watching you react to their amazingness. You’re fabulous Hannah ❤️

Straight No Chaser is another AMAZING acapella group! My favorite is thier 12 Days of Christmas (it's a type of Medley and spoof on the song) but anything by them is just crazy good!

That effect where the sound moves from one ear to the other is called "panning". Love your little Sphinx kitty !

Any Voiceplay would do. Plus I would suggest Home Free as well. Great group.

This cover was one of THE COOLEST things I had ever seen or heard when I first ran across it. I had to goad my Mom into watching the video. She has a very limited scope of music that she listens to and she is not on board with very much that happened later than the mid-70's. Before the 1980's even started, she quit listening for new stuff. So I mentioned that it was a cover of Queen and she was resistant with 'Nobody does it like Queen did it.' To that I said 'Fair enough. But have you ever seen a guy turn into a Guitar before?' It was enough to peak her interest so she watched it with me. She really enjoyed it. I can occasionally get her to listen to a few things but I know her limits. There are things I would never ask her to listen to since I already know she would be repulsed by. Every once in a while I can get her to listen to some covers of older songs but the fun part is getting her to listen to newer songs that are covered in older styles. Post-Modern Jukebox is awesome for that but she actually likes Pentatonix now. PTX has covered a lot of older music. They have a medley for that, actually. (I THINK it is called) 'The History Of Music', or something like that. I am sorry, I have a really bad memory. :)

The best part that you didn't notice (or at least mention) was Avi and Kevin doing literally every single instrument except that guitar solo. Kevin is such an amazing masterpiece. You absolutely must *experience* their mastermix of Forget You and Since You've Been Gone from America's Got Talent
