“The Gift of Fear”….Amazing book
@leslie69383 ай бұрын
Everyone should read The Gift of Fear! Especially women who have trouble being assertive (“too nice”) and teens/young adults who are gaining independence but don’t yet have the life experience to recognize potential danger or have not yet adopted the rock hard rule to always trust your gut even when you font know why the situation feels “off” or dangerous. The book explains why you often won’t be able to pinpoint why you feel uneasy in the moment. That was hugely valuable to me because even though I’ve always trusted my intuition, I like to figure out why, and after reading that book I don’t worry about that at all. There will be plenty of time to figure that out later. Lots of other valuable and interesting insights in that book.

Driving home on a country road one night, a woman jumped out in front of my car and asked for help. I pulled over and she asked if she could use my phone to call for help with her car- for some reason I rolled up my window almost all the way and said I would call 911 for her. After I told dispatch where we were I asked them if I should stay with the woman until they got there and she quickly said “No! Get out of there now!” I will never forget the tone in her voice and maybe it was nothing but it sent a chill down my spine.

It wasn't nothing! Perhaps the dispatcher knew of related crimes in the area, or just got an urgent feeling based on her experience, that you needed to get the heck out if there. I have a buddy that used to work high up in federal law enforcement, and he shared with me, the other side of those seemingly innocent incidents of someone stopping another person to ask for help; sex trafficing being the least of the victims worries. I won't say any more, because it would make your hair stand on end! Just keep listining to your instincts, which is the first warning voice that you hear in your head; not the second voice that you hear afterwards, that says, nah, you're just being peranoid, there is nothing to worry about. Always listen to that first warning voice!

@@nannapatty110 I live full-time in my vehicle, in a major city. I have never felt more unsafe on the road than I did living in apartment complexes around drug users and wackos. I can leave any time I don’t feel right in my gut, which is rare as I don’t stay places that don’t seem or feel safe from the jump. Can’t just pick up an apartment and move it someplace else. Have never had worse experiences than trusting slum lords and con artists who call themselves property owners. Being on the road is NOT inherently more unsafe just because you’re on the road. That is a logical fallacy. It’s as dangerous or as safe as you’re tuned into yourself and your instincts. It’s not a very safe place for anyone who sees themselves as a victim on any level. Predators will eat you up for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Too many people are scared to make a scene. If someone is getting in your bubble, and not practicing acceptable social behaviours, it’s completely acceptable to tell them to back the eff off, as loudly as is required until they do so. It’s actually quite easy to protect yourself when you’re not worried about a total stranger (who’s entered your space) getting upset with you. Eff that. The only exception is if my life is being threatened by someone with a weapon. Not about to act aggressively and aggravate the situation. Other than that, I do not suffer fools or psychopaths for any reason. I am not required to be nice to anyone who’s violating my space/boundaries. Therefore, the road is a rather safe place to be. The majority of people mind theirs while I mind mine. It’s the people who are too nice that one needs to be mindful about. Very few people are THAT selfless. There are still good people in this World, but most people won’t risk themselves to go out of their way for someone they don’t know. As it should be. Learn to help yourself, or you’ll become a victim in this World…over and over and over. Don’t gain this perspective by osmosis. Live in this World long enough and you either learn how to protect yourself and not live in fear…or you don’t. It’s really as simple as that.

I used to camp all the time by myself in a tent in Arizona. There is so much wilderness out there and it's absolutely stunning. I refused to allow my gender and size to define what I could and could not do, especially if it was something I was passionate about and loved doing. Photography, hiking and camping. With that said, if a place seemed a bit sketchy, my vehicle was already set up for car camping inside it, which I did regularly as well. In addition in Arizona they have open carry laws there, so I had a great equalizer as my Dad called it, in order to protect myself. Not just from men but also from wild animals that I might encounter. Anyone who might see me out there by myself would have to consider that they'd be facing my Colt, semi-auto, 32 with a full clip that I knew how to use very well. I have zero problem with defending myself. That goes for home as well. Predators are everywhere and if they see you, watch you and catch a pattern, they will take what they want wherever you're at. I felt safer in the wilderness than in town or even at home in some places. Listening to your instincts, having a dog and/or a firearm is the best way for a female to protect herself from the wicked. You just have to be ready to use it, no playing around, no doubt and no hesitation.

I don’t necessarily agree with your statistic but I do agree that media sensationalism and even just awareness can be harmful. Last thing I’ll add is that human trafficking in border states is absolutely way up now in 2024. Young women do need to be cautious and aware. I lived in Taos in my van last year doing BLM work, getting to see the familiar places was such a treat especially now that i'm in a completely different location.. honestly it's such a beautiful and magical place, happy you got to experience it :). Sucks to hear that you guys experienced that at bridge, but happy you made it out okay and had a safe rest of the trip. A LOT of people travel solo in the Taos area, and i know this instance may have been weeks ago, but notifying the authorities (specifically the BLM because they monitor the area) may be a good idea. Happy you guys are safe, take it easy :)

Thank you for sharing such a cool video. It takes work, and it was beautiful! As a solo female camper, I have defenses against such situations but you never know. You were right. Always trust your gut. I have a hard top shell… While not impervious, it’s far more defendable. You get more warning. To me a rooftop or bed tent are far too vulnerable in any situation. I love your lust for that indescribable joy that is our natural world. One passed by so many. Your quest is a real one. But please… make it safe. I use a lot of methods in remote places where I may camp for days and see no one. No cell service… Yeah, you have to be prepared for anything. ANYTHING.

I lived in The Enchanted Circle for 5 yrs in the early 80’s. The hot springs near Hondo (Stagecoach Lines) was a magnet for Creepers. I went there once w another person and there was a big group and it felt off. We left. It is not safe- glad that you were together. It’s sad that we can’t enjoy such a beautiful place w/o fearing for our safety.

This is my 1st video of yours. You are living my teenage dream in almost the same type of vehicle I wanted! Thank you for sharing your journey!! I most definitely hit the subscribe button💜 Keep some boards with you. Some thick ones, tell the guy it is going to be used to get your vehicle out and they should know how long, maybe 3ft. You will stick them under your tire when you get stuck in the mud. Your tires will grab the wood and you will be able to drive out over the boards. Keep a large black trash bag to put them in cause they will be muddy. Hope this helps you💜

That is so creepy, and it’s especially disgusting that another woman was involved in their dark scheme. I love your videos, but as a fellow woman, I often worry about your safety. You’re as beautiful as a model, and I’m surprised you’re not approached by creeps even more often. Please stay safe while you’re out camping alone or with another female. There are so many bad people out there these days, and it’s sad that young women have to feel afraid. I appreciated your mouse rescue story, as I am currently live-trapping a little mouse family that’s made its way into my house. Thank you for the beautiful videos. Stay safe! 🤍

It’s funny Hannah bc I often think when I watch your videos and when u travel solo how brave on some level you need to be as a woman to travel alone . Hard to consider but a woman by herself can be a very easy target. Important to always be reminded to be aware of your surroundings and to unfortunately not openly trust the goodness of everyone you meet. Sad reality but true .

Oh yes ...the Rio grande gorge near Taos. I've definitely been stuck in that clay mud before. Thought I threw a tie ride when I got back on a major road because my tires were so messed up. Turns out they were way off balance because the mud gets in the wheel wells! Good luck!

Those are the Taos Earthships. They are completely off grid. They are built into the ground for temperature control! Many of them are even built from recycled materials like tires and glass bottles. You can even stay in a few of them through airBnB.
