Shea butter is notorious for going grainy. It has a lower melting point than waxes. If it’s melted with the rest of them as opposed to waiting until they cool a bit before adding the shea, it alters the structure of it and goes grainy when it comes back to room temp. It could be happening in production, storage or transport. The good news is while it’s annoying, at least they’re being generous with the Shea butter :)

The rhode lip balms are pretty famous for getting grainy! particularly the colored versions if memory serves. As far as I understand there isn’t actually anything wrong with it, like it hasn’t expired it’s just less pleasant to use. I think that whole controversy came up while you were on maternity leave so you might not have heard about it. I have the caramel flavor from the original drop and it hasn’t gotten grainy, and it sounds like some people have the graininess issue and some don’t, so I think it’s just something to do with the formulation. All this to say, it’s basically a featured bug and if you buy a replacement you might find that it also eventually becomes grainy or it might be totally fine!

Yes. I've heard this on countless videos from different creators I've watched. It's nothing you did; it's a thing with those lip balms. In fact, I just watched another video complaining about hers always being grainy (and that she emailed the brand when it frist launched and is surprised it hasn't been addressed yet) abbey yung's lip balm showdown is what I'm referring to ❤ Also, I completely agree: the finish of those rhode bkushes is special and gorgeous. I also love the merit,though when I'm wanting a more sheer, watercolor sort of look 😊 (plus, the nuianced, muted gorgeous shades)

My order of clear Rhode lip about a year ago arrived as grainy as a lip scrub, they were quick to refund upon reporting this but I didn’t want to try again. Re: the Rhode lip goo -- I make my own cuticle/hand balm, and I find that shea butter tends to recrystalize into little firm bits with temperature changes (or maybe it just ... re-coalesces into shea blops over time?). Could be that! (BTW, my solution was to swap shea butter for mango seed butter, which doesn't seem to do that.) (And if you want to DIY your own, just microwave-melt a 1:1:1 ratio of beeswax, mango butter, and the type of coconut oil that's solid at room temp, then mix in any natural or synthetic fragrance oils if you like [NO WATER-BASED INGREDIENTS or you'll have to get into both emulsifiers and preservatives], stir, pour into your desired container while still hot. I like the little slidey-top metal tins, but you can use a cleaned-out empty container you've already got.)

not sure if this is something you would do but i would be really interested in a video about advice/recommendations for building your own palette of singles. like where do i get them from and how do i select the colours and stuff! i really want to create one palette of a bunch of singles with all the best colours but don't really know how to start
@kaitlynzinnecker33642 ай бұрын
Off the top of my head Half Magic and Clionadh are two brands that make lovely single shadows that can be put into your own palette. I think HLP made a video a long time ago that was something along the lines of “Shopping My Stash and Building My Own Eyeshadow Palette” that you could watch. As for colors I’d recommend with just starting with a few and over time asking yourself questions like What shades am I missing that I’d actually wear? What finishes am I most attracted to? and building from there. The best part of single shadows is how customizable they are - you only buy exactly what you want - the downside is they can be quite expensive.
@NoDecaf72 ай бұрын
Most of my singles are from palettes but I took the pots out. stuck a magnet to the bottom with an additional dab of super glue. Also I learned today that even ColourPop has singles, there's a market for them and they're at every price point, budget to indie! Putting palettes together is tricky though, Pinterest is fantastic for pulling ideas, copying color stories of palettes to dupe the vibes. But figuring out what works for one's skin undertone can be tricky. Just when I think I know what works, I try something new and reconsider.

Keep an eye on it if you get it, along with the Tower 28 glosses, both molded on me after about 6 months of use. Now, I typically burn through my favorite gloss in that time so it isn’t a huge deal but I still don’t want to risk it so I haven’t repurchased either. It’s something to keep an eye on with any clean beauty products. They go off quickly because they use less effective preservative systems.

It's so fun and relaxing to watch you put make up on, don't worry about it being "too boring". What's really interesting with these blushes is: on you this muted color looks perfect. On me it would look like dirt. While that color you described as a brighter berry color would still look a little muddy on me. I own a blush in a darker berry color that is brighter than this and still looks soft and muted on me but not TOO muted so that it looks "dirty". It's just creating the perfect amount of moodiness for my liking. If I was to match a blush to the level of brightness of my skin, I have to go for colors with little to no grey or brown added to them. They are rather hard to find nowadays, I think. And they will always look brighter in the pan/pot than on my skin. I just realized that when I bought a bright peachy orange cream blush, applied it to my cheeks and it really wasn't too light, but almost didn't show on my skin. When I formulate my own blushes, I really only add white and no black or brown to them, to create a color that works perfectly for me. Unless I want a more moody color, then I add a bit of brown and additional black, so it "dulls down" the color a bit. It's nice to see colors on different skintones. And I honestly love the way you do your make up. It matches you and your vibe perfectly imho.

you've just articulated something that i have had trouble putting my finger on. blushes that have brown or gray in them also look awful on me. i have light neutral skin and dark hair and eyes, so contrast is the name of the game for me. i have this huda stick blush that is very orange and it looks so good on me, even though i'm more of a "winter." i think it's the clarity!

re rhode lip balm: it’s a super common issue with the. why can’t i think of the term. the moisturizing stuff. the temperature change causes them to melt then resolididy grainily. at first i thought there was stuff on my lips every time i applied mine. like crumbs. not so! anyway it happened with two of their lip balms and is the reason i’ve given up on it for the time being. a customer service rep i spoke to said they’re working on the issue so i expect a “new and improved” formula will eventually come out. to fix it i recommend warming it up (there should be how tos online- i don’t want to misguide you)

I haven't tried the lip balms yet, but I do hear they get grainy by a lot of people. As someone that has many trial and error lip balm attempts, I suspect it is the shea butter. If you don't properlqy ice bath something with shea butter in it, it will eventually bead up. I've also gotten grains from using honey as an ingredient. Not sure if it is the issue, but if it is, it's not harmful. You just have to melt the grains with your body heat by smooshing your lips together. Some people find it too annoying to repurchase but you can probably use up what you have at least.

About the Rhode balm: it’s happened to me twice now! I live in a 4 season climate and notice it going grainy in colder temps. I learned a hack to take hot water and place the balm in there for a few minutes. It warms up the formula enough for the graininess to go away, but I def don’t think I’ll reorder. MAJOR bummer because I loved this balm before this happened!
@brabalans3482 ай бұрын
The reason the Rhode lip balm gets grainy at times is because it has Shea butter in it and along with it several other similar natural butters that in colder temperatures often becomes a little grainy. There is nothing wrong with it but it will be like that during colder times probably. You know that is what it is if you take some between your fingers and warm it up. It will eventually make most of the little grains melt into oil.

Even in ambient home temperature the change from summer to fall/winter, I’ve had a similar grainy thing happen with the rephy lip gloss.

I recently ordered the Rhode peptide lip treatment (espresso) and it was grainy from the first application! I also wear it anyway haha Probably won't reorder it though if the Ami Colé packaging doesn't leak anymore because it is actually my fave

all I can see is that montage of Gene Belcher from Bob's Burgers going " *THIS IS ME NOW* " with him in different looks 🤣 relatable

Hi Hannah, I’ve been following your quest to find a Gone Greige dupe with great interest and I think I might have found something. I have a similar pale neutral skin tone (all your shade recommendations work perfectly for me) and have similar lipstick colour preferences. I’ve found the Kiko Smart Fusion lipstick (black square packaging) in 436 Cold Brown looks very similar, but with a slightly sheerer formula like the Glossier Ultralips. I’m wondering if it could be a good match?? ❤

Ahahaha, the grainy Rhode lip! I wondered if that was going to happen.... Only reason I'll never buy them. Ole henriksen have never gone grainy. Thanks for letting us know if happened to you.

Interesting! I literally just watched a dedicated lip balm showdown video from Abbey Yung and she said the exact same thing about the Rhode lip balm turning grainy. She also loves everything about it but has this persistent issue with the graininess. So definitely nothing you’ve done but seems like their issue with the formula

Grabbed my Espresso Rhode peptide lip tint, and while this shade in particular hasn't been gritty, I have noticed it with the shade "Toast." Others have complained about the grittiness, but for some reason it's hit or miss. I've never noticed it with the non-tinted lip treatments.

Ahh that might be why I’ve never had that happen with mine! I only use the clear ones. Good to know.

Thank you for the information regarding the Ilia and Merit products. I just purchased the Ilia and am trying to figure out if I should put it on before or after my sunscreen. I also put it on twice yesterday, right out of the shower, then right before makeup after sunscreen because my skin is starting to do it's winter dryness thing.
