27:40 a rent boy is not a male sex worker. In the UK, especially around the 70-80s, a rent boy was a runaway underage teenage boy (or otherwise homeless young man) who resorted to letting older men use them for sex in return for a roof over their head. A lot of these boys ended up dead/trafficked/etc. but since it's very difficult to break out of a cycle like that you would often see rent boys continuing to live that lifestyle into their 20s until they either broke out or sought help. There are a lot of autobiographies and documentaries about this topic since it was very common at the time. A lot of the more well known people who survived the rent boy lifestyle are huge advocates when it comes to speaking out about the sheer number of pedophiles rings in the UK and about how police still refuse to look into it for various reasons. Imo, David being an adult in the 90s was probably adopting this into his larp rather than an actual rent boy since it fit the themes of his fetishism.

In my experience, warning about or expressing disgust at PDF files/predators is a common tactic predators themselves use. The man who groomed me spoke with disgust about PDF files he himself knew and once spearheaded a small movement amongst our "friends" to get a Facebook group that was posting CP taken down. (This was in 2012 and didn't go far past us and a few other people reporting the group.) The old front end manager at my job was infamous for creeping on the teenage girls in his department, sending them money, and hitting them up for pics as soon as they turned 18 or were no longer working here, and yet he got viscerally angry when he learned that I've been victimized multiple times. It's an unfortunate reason you can never truly trust advocates for child safety- because predators will wiggle their way into that circle to abuse the trust and authority being in such a circle would grant them. Seems like a month can't go by without some shlub in the art community getting found out for being a predator when they had previously been an ardent advocate for child safety or anti-p*dophilia. Or when a so-called "p*do-hunter" turns out to have been one themselves. It happens literally ALL the time and it goes to show that you never really know a person.

It can be derogatory, though, and often is. Like, a former friend of mine (biracial, white/Indigenous but looks like every other bland white dude, ironically) looked at a baby photo of my cousin and goes “oh. A little Aryan baby.” with the nastiest contempt in his voice. He absolutely meant it in an insulting way, he made that very clear later on and there’s a reason we aren’t friends anymore. I just wish people would start using “towhead” more. It doesn’t have the same negative connotation that “Aryan” does, while meaning the same thing.

It also means different things depending on context. The original anthropological context referred to people from a certain region of India who had travelled throughout the world. The Nazis hijacked that term to mean blond-haired blue eyed tall white people with certain facial features. J.R.R. Tolkien famously sent a note to the German publisher who tried to publish the Hobbit during WWII hilariously schooling them on the actual anthropological term in response to an inquiry about his heritage. (This has very little to do with anything I just figured we all needed to think of something fun after this video.)

@@LivyRivyIn colonial times, families grew their own flax to make into fabric for clothing. Transforming the flax into thread was a complicated, involved process with many time-consuming steps. After the flax was harvested, it was soaked in water for several days to soften it so the inner fibers could be removed from the stalk. To separate the long, thin fibers from the shorter, coarser ones, the flax was pulled through a bed of nails or combed in a process called "towing." The shorter fibers that were extricated were of a lesser quality and were called "tow." This led to the term "towheads" to describe people, particularly children, whose hair resembled these strands.

I’m personally going with the abuse resulting in arrested development for one really big reason. When I saw the child edits, they gave me a sense of Déjà vu. The whole ARG explanation wave has made situations like this 100 times worse, more complicated and difficult. Because if you look at something with the ARG explanation in the back of your mind, literally EVERY slightly weird situation with missing clues seems like an ARG or something similar. It is annoying and crazily harmful that a lot of people these days discover a weird situation like this where there is no direct answer about what’s going on simply because information is missing and then are immediately like: "Ah this can’t be real. This is yet another stunt to get internet attention and tell a weird and twisted story to get people hooked." We need to see things for what they are until there are definitive signs or proof that it is genuinely a fake story meant to entertain and get viral.

The merch is really really cute! I'm also glad you're covering this. I say this as someone who has worked in a psychiatric facility on a unit of psychotic and mood disorders more on the manic/delusion end, and who has a degree in psychology and neuroscience - at times I think the true crime and eerie content community can poise the symptoms of certain disorders as "normal person being creepy" when really it is "person suffering from the symptoms of a serious mental health condition." Especially as mental health at its worst is not pretty and does not often abide by the logic/expectations of reality. HOWEVER. This was not that at all. As I continued to watch more about it, especially with the expose about this person's past and how sound and clear of mind they are in their online posts, as well as their newspaper article from Nick Crowley's video (I haven't fully finished this video yet). it is certainly a complex issue going on and I hope that investigations on this individual succeed.

I learned about this case when a smaller youtuber covered it pre nexpo and Nick but he was asked by the subreddit to delete it as to not bring unwanted attention to it. Ugh it's genuinely disgusting this man is even allowed to roam and use the internet freely he should facing some serious prison time and kept away from vulnerable kids at any cost. I do have to saythe way people online are treating as some weird little viral moment to get clicks off is also gross. This isn't some funny try hard arg or bad horror series it's a genuine predator who is sharing some borderline if not straight up illegal content. People are laughing at those nasty images and sharing them because to them it's weird when many don't even realize it's fetish content they're spreading. Don't get me wrong the worst person in this whole situation is the maggot preying on kids but People have become so desensitized to legitimate p*dophilia due to many popular figures being exposed for it it has become almost a bogeyman like thing instead of a real dangerous threat to kids everywhere.

Personally I think this guy is unwell in some way (of course beyond having obvious paraphilias). I know people use the "he seems to know what he is doing is wrong/he is too articulated to just be ill" argument but the thing is, that's a pretty stereotypical and inaccurate way to see people with mental issues. A lot of them both are aware their behavior can be wrong & a lot of them can be well articulated, but they're not mentally fit still. Obviously that doesn't in any way excuse him, Gods no, I just think people are way too quick to claim it's impossible when it isn't. There are easier and less suspicious ways to create fetish content like this, especially nowadays with AI (which is one of the reasons it should be banned, full stop).
