Of all the fictional characters to ever exist, Hannibal Lecter might be the one that needed a backstory the least. He's a character that's infinitely scarier if you don't know why he is the way he is. But apparently I don't know the power of money.

I always imagined his backstory was really dull. Typical serial killer traits: Cruelty to animals, narcissism, all that. He just happened to be exceptionally intelligent and successful. What is interesting is Lecter's greatest weakness, which is very briefly touched upon in both Red Dragon and Silence, is that he doesn't know *why* he's like this, and he's very insecure about being "crazy", of not being in total control of himself. Notice how whenever Starling or Graham call him out on this, he drops the mind games and physically threatens them.

Historical context a little lacking here. The Soviets forced Lithuania into annexation in 1940 along with the rest of the Baltic States. Germany occupied it in June 1941 when they invaded the USSR. The Soviets in 1944 were not liberating it from German occupation, they were returning to resume their own, which lasted until 1990, when it became the first Soviet republic to declare independence. It's still a tough period of history for the Baltics as there were many situations in which countrymen fought each other as part of the German and Soviet militaries respectively. Many at the time viewed the Germans as liberators and protectors rather than occupiers, at least for the first couple of years, and even to this day families are divided on how exactly to view that period of their history and there are often fights about it. It's a deep and nuanced issue and obviously this isn't a history video so I wouldn't expect a detailed coverage of it, but it's worth pointing out here regardless I think.

I know Soviet soldiers and leaders unfortunately also did some atrocities and were not always good guys that propaganda dictated for so many years, but I hope no sane person to this day would consider na-zi's to be liberators, anything good they brought was taken from pain and tears of others and people that think na-zi regime was more desirable and pleasant than soviet one are heartless.
@oliverhughes610
@oliverhughes610 Ай бұрын
@@TheShut1 Today the majority opinion (from what I can tell) is just 'Nazis bad, Soviets bad' which given their history is completely valid. At the time, the Soviets were more about destroying local national identity whereas the Germans capitalised on promoting it, so it makes sense they had support. However it is worth noting that Lithuania, unlike Latvia and Estonia, did not have its own SS division. Approximately 36,000 Lithuanians fought for the Wehrmacht, not including Lithuanian nationals with German ethnicity from the Memel region that was annexed by Germany in 1939.

For years, I made it a point to never learn anything about Lithuania. Ever. Because after traveling the world and seeing all these famous places, the world started feeling smaller, less mysterious. So I figured, if I never learn anything about Lithuania, anything is possible there. It's like "Here Be Dragons" on ancient maps. For all I know, in Lithuania, people wear hats on their feet and hamburgers eat people. Then I learned Hannibal was Lithuanian and I was like "fuck, now I know exactly 1 Lithuania Fact."

8:14 - I can't believe I'm "defending" this flick, but: 1944 + "8 years later" = 1952. No such thing as the Berlin Wall at that time (it went up in 1961). In fact, it probably wouldn't have been that hard moving from Eastern Europe to W-Germany or France in the early 1950s. Hannibal could always have claimed that he was a displaced person, trying to get back to relatives of his in France or something.

The tv show Hannibal does somewhat acknowledge Hannibal Rising with Bryan Fuller saying had things continued, Lecter’s Aunt and Uncle (who David Bowie was envisioned for the role) making an appearance but in the shows third season there’s a subplot that acknowledges it but subverts plenty of details to make Hannibal’s less generic but more detailed and complex which is very much what the show was good at for a lot of its characters

16:02 Thank you for mentioning It's Only the End of the World! Gaspard was great in that film, and also in A Very Long Engagement (which led him to be cast in Hannibal Rising), in Saint Laurent, and in Jacquou le Croquant the same year Hannibal Rising came out, to name a few. He had much better films and performances in France, he was a very respected and acclaimed actor there, so it's unfair to judge his entire career based on a single film which turned out to be bad (which wasn't your case but I often see people doing that). English wasn't his first language and he did the best he could with what he was given, not to mention that he had a lot of pressure on him for playing such an iconic character, so it's clear that he wasn't very comfortable. He was also a fan casting choice for the role of Gambit in the MCU. He gave up on Hollywood after Hannibal Rising until the director of Moon Knight invited him to play Midnight Man in it. It's a shame that he died so young in such a tragic way. Thank you for being respectful towards Gaspard although you hated this film, James.

I actually think Hannibal Rising helps explain a lot of why Hannibal behaves the way he does later in life. It really feels like he massively over-corrected as a young man, and had to learn to reign it in and actually have discipline, instead of wildly indulging on a whim. Really, this movie makes his older self even more impressive, because he went from this to a collected, stoic, highly intellectual master of deception.

4:21 At the very end of the novel Hannibal and Clarice not only run away together, they get a gigantic castle full of servants So just to be clear, Hannibal Lecter owns not one, but TWO castles. That we know of. Man, I should really look into becoming a therapist/museum curator/high-profile felon constantly on the run who has to be willing to end his career on a moment's notice.

I find it fascinating that filmakers want to make every villain have a tragic backstory. I feel like someone like Hannibal is the type of person who gets everything he wants and feels entitled to "the finer things in an extreme snobby way. He doesnt need a tragic backstory.

Great video as always, but you actually missed three kills at 5:15. That German plane is a Junkers Ju 87 G ‘Stuka’, which had a crew of two - a pilot and a rear gunner. The Soviet tank is a T-34/85, which had a crew of five - the commander, the loader, the gunner, the driver, and the radio operator/bow machinegunner. For the gender breakdown, that’s one additional man and two unknowns - the vast majority of Soviet tank troops were men, but there were some women in mixed crews, like the famous Ukrainian Hero of the Soviet Union Mariya Oktyabrskaya.

I just hate that Harris was forced into writing the prequel. He obviously wanted creative control over his character but with his hand forced he rushed out a bunch of half-baked ideas which just didn't seem to work. Such a shame.
