This film would have been infinitely better if it was just a standalone story and not part of the Hannibal series. Just change the main character's name and pretty much all the film's problems disappear.

Thomas Harris normally took about 10 years to write a book. The fact that this one was rushed, proves he was pressured to get it done. I wonder what we would have gotten if he went at his normal pace.

He didnt want to do it. It was forced on him by the producers of the movie, because they said if he didnt write it, theyd get someone else to. TBH, Hannibal was a shitty novel too, so it probably wouldn't have been much better

Poor Harris. To stop anyone else prolonging the demise of Hannibal and dragging out the franchise into a pitiful, saddening death, he took it upon himself to tear down his greatest creation quickly, before it was bled.

3:18 I'm glad you mentioned that. By the by, in France, the polygraph has been recognized as 'torture propre'. It's a kind of torture that includes humiliation. Not only is the so-called lie detector total quackery, but it's also been judged, in France, where the action takes place, as an unjustified form of degradation. That being said, I do not remember when France recognized it as torture propre, exactly. Even if it were not total quackery, it is apparently easy to cheat on a lie detector test.

I'm not really a huge Hannibal fan, but I have a very important question. Why does this exist? Seriously, why give someone like Hannibal Lecter a origin story? One of the best parts about this character(in my opinion) is that he is surrounded in mystery, thats what makes him so interesting. We don't need to know how he became who he is, whether it was since birth or a tragic event. We shouldn't be able to know, so that the mystery is still kept around that character.

This case is particularly bad trough because actually the origin of Hannibal Lecter was already touched on in the last few chapters of the novel Hannibal, establishing the character of Misha, what happened to her and the Nazi thing was all already in the previous novel. But because Dino de Laurentis wanted a new movie, and a prequel Forcing Harris to extend on that completely needlessly

It really was the case that they undermined the sheer essence of what made Hannibal such a terrifying villian in the first place. First...Hannibal was apparently supposed to be a genius of savant level status. A genius of that caliber would have been reasonably much more self aware at an early age. Part of what made him so evil was that he had an intelligence level that reasonably could have given him any life of his choosing...but the monster he actually was used that intelligence as a weapon taken directly out of his twisted toolbox in order to fulfill his psychotic lust for total control and ultimately full possession of his victims...which in his mind was literally eating them. So Hollywood thinks its best to make Hannibals behavior justified because: Evil Nazis and Communists. What a bunch of lazy bullshit. Then they justified the cannibalism by the soldiers because they were stuck and hungry. If you wanted to show them as truly terrifying...how about just the cannibalism even amidst other options and no desperation for survival? Again...lazy bullshit at the highest levels. Then...Hollywood truly furthers thier lazy bullshit with the whole notion that Hannibal is some bully hunter which completely underminds his terrifying persona...because another feature of his terrifying character was that he was a psychologist...and innocent people in a state of total vulnerability sought him out for help...literally walking themselves into the lions den...and he put himself in that position using his intelligence in order to carry out his sadistic fantasies. His character was literally the epitome of Bully taken to the next level and beyond. Hollywood just cant help itself minute after minute...because again...in lazy fashion...the racist and shovenistic butcher character shows up...disrespecting the female protagonist...and Hannibal white knights the situation...because apparently she forgot how to fight momentarily...and also...in a gigantic undermining...the whole idea implies that a psychopath at the level of Lecter had the capacity to bond with anybody. The scene would have been much more effective had she beat the guy nearly to death...but we only see the first actual hit...and then the shot tightens up on Lecter just watching...the action shown by the shadows on his face...the shot starts tightening...one to two visible drops of blood land..but hes in a trance like state...highly excited by what hes taking in...then he comes out of it and realizes he should hide his level of excitement because hes not reacting in a socially acceptable way. One customer noticed how he reacted and locks eyes with Hannibal. Then later on in the movie there is a subtle reference to one of his victims being the customer that noticed his reaction. I could go on and on as to how much I think this screen play was written by a twelve year old history buff with a mad cartoon addiction. I was interested in seeing a compelling back story for this monumental villian...but the only cannibal I saw was the original author devouring his creation. Lame.

25:45 So Lady Murasaki is driven away by this, but is just slightly disturbed a being presented a decapitated head earlier? Also, I know it's just a movie, but I feel bad for Hannibal, he was unknowingly fed his little sister and his only living relative is driven away by his vengful acts. Even Billy Loomis and Stu Matcher had easier lives than that.

That thing with the katana making that noise is called "audible sharpness". it's a sound effect meant to covey how sharp the knife, sword, or blade is. The problem with that is that it's used all the time in everything and it occurs even when it makes no sense. A dagger in a leather sheath shouldn't make much of a noise when drawn, much less a "zzing!" sound. Sometimes a film will use it when the blade is merely held aloft, which shouldn't make any sound at all. Once you notice it, you hear it everywhere.

I believe they said it best in Scream. I am paraphrasing here by the way. Hannibal Lecter is scary because he doesn't have a backstory he's just a rich guy that likes to eat people. Once again that makes him far more terrifying cuz he has every advantage and he has absolutely no reason to be a psychopath and yet he loves to eat human body parts. This movie does detract from the head of a series however I do enjoy it it's kind of a guilty pleasure.

I've always thought that, in this story, Hannibal should've been chained up and left to die with his sister already dead chained to him, and then, consciously, he'd eat his sister, giving him real pathos.

The problem is Hannibal Lecter is the consequence of both external _and_ internal factors. Yet, the film acts like the traumatic incident was the trigger for his psychological profile when much of the raw ingredients were there in him from the beginning. The loss and subsequent eating of his sister just pushed it in a specific direction. It would have far more interesting to explore his personality, all the aspects of him that we can identify as human like his love of classical music, or an exploration of those internal elements like his keen intelligence and learning abilities that give him an advantage, all of which would make the audience question what may have become of Hannibal had fate not interfered. It could have been a better narrative to explore the character through introspection rather than just through the process of him hunting down Nazis.

Well, if you are so particular about Japanese weaponry... The knife that Lector uses is probably not a tanto - that is just that - a knife. This movie wasn't great but at least its kind of fun which I think it was all they where going for, no real effort seemed to be put into the story, it was all around the hype on who this kid becomes which idk it seems like a forced transition like something else would need to motivate him to becoming the Silence of the lambs character. I do agree the it was sad to see the series go but honestly the writing went down hill pretty quick, I lost interest at the totem poll corps display episode which was right after the Violin episode (my personal favorite). The killers got boring in how they acted and how they killed, with few exceptions. Will and the others shouldn't have even suspected Hannibal but they where on to him so fast, it just weakened the character to me, same with Will going off the deep end but thats just my opinion, it had good bones but they couldn't support the series for me. glad someone enjoyed it at least.

We all know Lecter is a cannibal, but do we really need see him preform the act. Not seeing him eat people helps me see him maintain his elegance, and sophistication which is why I think Hannibal: Rising takes 3rd place out the four films .

That would really depend on what you mean by "real", it is an authentically japanese made sword.

I mean, there IS a nazi character who's a bit likable, as hard as that is to say, Stroheim from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is a nazi who's a slight protagonist without flat out changing sides.

I have a confession: *_Hannibal Rising_* was the very first film I had watched from beginning to end, that introduced me to the character of Hannibal Lector and the film series, and I had saw this in the cinema with my Pops when I was 13. Even then, I did not think too much of it, was only intrigued by the revenge story. And yea, that bit with Hannibal wearing the muffler, is only in *_ONE_* short scene, yet justifies putting it on the posters and DVD covers and to "pay homage" to Hannibal's muffler in the previous films. A completely unnecessary prequel for a character that honestly did not really require one, the same could be said for Michael Myers and Han Solo.

You stated that Hannibal cut the main bad guys "hamstrings", But that is incorrect, he cut the "Achilles Tendens"

I feel like your intros are more inspired from the tv show I mean, Lecter isn't a particularly British name... but that's all I got You think this was Harris just giving a big middle finger to Dino De Laurentiis? Like, 'fine I'll do it but I'm going to make sure you regret it'. No one likes the movie, the story is sloppy and offensive, the actors...... are doing their best with what they were given, and it retcons the original trilogy in the worst way possible. I'm sure Harris was quite capable of creating a better story but it seems evident that he didn't want to. Thank God Hugh didn't get cast, have you seen him in Ella Enchanted or Blood and Chocolate? I would have cried if I saw him in one more bad adaptation.

The intro are (as best to my ability) shot for shot re-creations of the shows cooking scenes, and yeah that’s a possibility, however I also found Hannibal the book that is to be pretty bad as well so the theory doesn’t hold water for me
