I wouldn't say that Anthony Hopkins was playing a parody of his past self in Red Dragon. Hannibal was just openly mocking Will and harbored a lot of anger towards him since he was responsible for his incarceration. I actually consider Red Dragon to be better than all of the other Hannibal films. It was mostly the personal relationship between Will and Hannibal and the serial killer in this film that stood out to me. Anthony Hopkins actually wanted to make his own sequel to Hannibal but they wouldn't let him go through with it. I wouldn't have minded seeing a good conclusion to Hannibal's story instead of watching the film series end on a cliffhanger. He definitely played a parody of himself in Hannibal though.

@@DoratTheKiller The Hannibal movie was such a parody of the actual Hannibal character that Anthony Hopkins worked on a screenplay to give his character a proper sendoff. He just lacked the chemistry with the Julianne Moore version of Clarice in the sequel and the subtle presence of his character was missing too. Hannibal fans are better off with the Hannibal TV series and with the Hannibal movies such as Manhunter, The Silence of the Lambs, and Red Dragon.

@@TAhowardrocksx2 Considering the choice of footage, I believe that Deusdaecon was specifically talking about Hannibal randomly mimicking the same "pure Virginian accent" from SoTL ("what does your father do, is he a coal miner?") while talking to Will, who doesn't have a distinctive accent... It just felt like a sort of parody in that sense... English isn't my first language so I'm pretty bad at distinguishing accents, but even I can notice that Mr Hopkins doesn't use the same voice in any of the trilogy movies... It makes sense in "Hannibal" singe he's in hiding, but for "Red Dragon" it's weird.

I've seen Manhunter so many times it's really hard to watch this one and not compare it negatively. Manhunter was very much about Will's psychology (much like the TV series) and had a Lecter that was far less cartoonish. It's also one of the most beautifully-shot films I've ever seen-the scene with the tiger wonderfully captures the sense of discovering the animal through touch. I also loved Dollarhyde's brief compliment to Reba ("you look so good in the sun") that references the painting without beating you over the head with it. Yeah, the music is really dated, but overall I find it the superior version.

One little touch I loved about the movie is when Reba tries to touch his face and he stops her. In the movie we just see him looking at her fingers for a moment. In the when she she touches his face, he stops her but he thinks briefly how he could just bite each finger off one by one. And even mockingly wonders how she would be able to cut pies then. I thought they would just gloss over that whole bit, but when he looks at her fingers you can tell either the director or the actor knew what was in the book.

Ralph Fiennes, Anthony Hopkins and Edward Norton are incredible actors. Although this isnt the most amazing or unique movie Ive ever seen, their performances make it rather enjoyable to watch.

While I will always say that Hugh Dancy was the best Will Graham, I still greatly enjoy Red Dragon the movie. Anthony Hopkins is always great to watch as Hannibal and this is my introduction to Ralph Fiennes which made a huge impression on me since he is now one of my favorite actors, he can take scenes that would be comical in the hands of lesser actors and makes it both chilling and menacing which was why he was the perfect choice for Voldemort, a villain who is very theatrical and over the top while maintaining air of really frightening evil that I don’t think that another actor could pull it off. But Hannibal Lester has always been one of my favorite literary characters that I enjoy watching an adaptation of him even if it is not as good as it should be.

I read the original Thomas Harris series and I found Will Graham to be a much more involving protagonist then Clarice Starling. Graham was a good man heartlessly manipulated back into a profession that was destroying him and it costs Graham everything. He was tragic. In the book series, Clarice Starling runs of with Hannibal Lecter and they find happiness together. Ewwww.

Some years ago I worked at a video store while in college and spoke to a customer who was renting Manhunter, it turned out he was a city homicide detective and had read the book as well. He said that the movie and the book should be required watching how criminal profiling is done and the science involved in putting it all together. In the original movie, the atmosphere and setups were well done one thing they left out of the remake that was in the original was that they cracked the code by using the Bible I think Old Testament. anyone that has seen the original movie gets to see just about every actor in Michael Manns stable from when he was in charge of Miami Vice TV Series

I don’t get how some people hate the opening scene from Red Dragon. I thought that scene was great. It gives a little bit of backstory to Hannibal which is what I like rather than knowing his full backstory or absolutely no backstory.

I don't think they had their timeline wrong at the end. If you look at Will on the boat he shows no injury and very much recovered from the ordeal. If Silence of the Lambs took place right after, I would assume that they would have shown Will in a hospital or at least with some bandaged around his chest wound.

@@solidsnack352 In comparison to Manhunter, where Lector has far less attention given to him, Will's normalness in this movie is probably a necessity to help give the audience someone who feels grounded in reality that they can relate with. In Manhunter, Will was clearly a bit unhinged and affected by his past, but he was also the main focus of the movie along with the killer, while Lector was simply a side character who did serve an important role, but was not the star of the show, so the filmmakers didn't have to make Will seem normal in that film, because his own troubles added a layer to the film as it was just as much about him stopping the killer as it was about him dealing with his own issues.

@@solidsnack352 I only saw Manhunter once, and it was nearly a decade ago, so my memory of it isn't exactly the most accurate, and I'm pretty sure it was an edited-for-TV version that I saw as well, but I do remember the part where Graham visited Lector pretty well, and the way that Bill Cox played Lector was far less intimidating than in this movie, but it also served to show how easy it was for him to seem unassuming and lower people's guards as he tried to get into their heads. The danger he presented was far less obvious than when Hopkins played the character. Cox's Lector could get into your head without you realizing it, because he never made it obvious that he was trying to do so in the first place. Despite Hopkins' excellent and (in my opinion) far more memorable performance, I always found it kind of obvious whenever he was trying to play with Clarice's head in Silence of the Lambs. Again, though, it's been nearly a decade, so not everything I'm saying may be one hundred percent accurate. I could be misremembering certain things because of how long it's been since I saw it.

What I love the most is there’s so many moments in this series that were inspired by real life events of serial killers, including making up facts to piss off the murderer in order to catch them. Although no one was set on fire, in one instance, a tombstone of one of his victims was smashed into the car of an employee working at a radio station.

I liked the ending of the film better than the book. Spoiler: In the book, Dolarhyde ambushes Will at his home and slashes him across the face, permanently disfiguring him. Molly (Will's wife) then shoots Dolarhyde dead. It was a pretty lackluster ending when compared to the movie, where Will's insight into Dolarhyde's background resulted in both a psychological and a physical confrontation.

I loved this review of Red Dragon. One of my favourite psychological thrillers and very underrated film in my opinion, deserves more praise. Bret Ratner's best work. (Though he made only terrible films after this film) Hannibal Rising ruined the series. It is the worst film of the franchise yet Hannibal gets more hate. I only wish the story about Hannibal's origin would be remade by some one else again.

One of my problems with the series is how unrealistic the forensics is, including Will seemingly imagining way more detail than he could deduce, even subconsciously, from the evidence provided at a crime scene. Compare it to Frank Black's ability in _Millennium_ (preferably Season 1 before they cocked it up). Frank assesses certain things from the available evidence, but the details are still up for investigation. It's more engaging that way in terms of both following the intricacies of detective work, but also shows how down-to-earth the character despite having an enhanced ability.

In the book the Painting talked to Dollarhyde. Something the movie never really explored which explains a lot of Dollarhyde's brand of crazy. Plus explains why he had a painting for dinner. I felt that could have be done in the movie and not come off silly.

As much as I love Edward Norton in anything, I think I prefer Manhunter's version of Will. The "You are like me" comparison holds a lot more water in that adaptation. Though Hopkin's Lecter in Red Dragon is far more impressive.

I haven't really read the books, just the movies, so I don't know everything about Lector himself. So, when Lectors was drugged​ for info, only give a dip recipe instead, how does that happen? What makes Lector so mentally strong that drugs have little to no effect on him? It just makes me think that there is a touch of something supernatural about him.

I've never seen this movie, I honestly stopped watching at Hannibal because I waa introduced to the movies as a child who was tired of slasher flicks & wanted something a bit more dialogue driven. Now that I am an adult, just watching the scene mimicking Clarice's first meet with lector & Norton rebuffing lectors advances of mental intrusion & trying to emasculate lector I can't help but admire anthony hopkins acting all the more. As norton is about to walk away, you see lectors eyes beginning to water but not tear as he internalizes his emotions. Showing in my view, that he is upset at the intelligence of his opponent. It isn't someone he is able to condescend too, it is someone who IS NOT fascinated in studying him & that deeply effects lector as subtly shown. BUT take my words as they are because like I said, this movie I haven't seen. Only through your clips & description. Love your reviews though ❤

I guess that depends on what you think a "review" is to me a review is "a critical appraisal of a book, play, film, etc." which is exactly what this is, I clearly discuss what is good and what I think is bad about the film aswell as discuss meaning, intention and interpretation of the actors and filmmakers who created it, but yes I do this through the medium of a chronological recap of the film in order to maintain context and cohesion as well as to involve the audience, giving the illusion that they are watching the film along with me as I discuss its content, hope this explanation helps.

Red Dragon is a prequel to Silence of the Lambs, but it's also a remake of Manhunter. Manhunter was not a prequel to Silence since it was made first.

Sorry, can't watch this-- the narration when you address the camera is _so_ loud compared to your voice over narration during the film clips. Too jarring. I tried watching on a tablet and on a TV, with same audio results.

To series 1 & 2 were great. Season 3 was shit, so self indulgent imo

Yeah, but somewhere along the line it seemed to lose intrigue and just show over long shots of Hanibal opening a wine bottle or cutting some meat. The story just went from being a gritty cop drama with a new killer every week (like Luther or Whitechapel) and an underlying plot in the background, to just being a nonsensical farce where Hanibal just seemed to kill people at random, and Gillian Anderson's god awful acting. The finale of S2 was brilliant, but then season three just made the build up all for naught. I respect your opinion if you like season 3 but for me it just didn't work.
