With the Predators being killed so easily in this movie, it actually makes more sense in the unrated cut. The movie explained how the xenomorphs were used in a ritual for the predators to prove themselves worthy of being hunters, the unrated cut goes further to explain that these predators are teenagers, which definitely explains why these predators are so weak. _However,_ they're still bulky as hell, not just for teenagers, but for predators in general, so take your pick.

+Troin Maybe those were the "prodigies" of their hunters because let's face it, testing inexperienced hunters against the ultimate prey is kinda stupid for a bunch of other reasons. It's obvious the plot changed so many times that in the end it made no sense.

The reason they are so bulky is because the filmmakers wanted to make the predators look more heroic that's the reason these predators weren't as slimy as their counterparts

Not exactly 'teenagers' in that sense. It's called _Unblooded Hunters_ , and also used with " _Young Blood_ ", indicating someone who is new to the hunt.

I believe the thing with the guns could be due to Weyland anticipating additional exploration parties to arrive. There is a line about that from him in the movie. He might have thought to be forced to defend his claim by force.

What annoyed me the most about this movie, as you pointed out yourself, was how easily those first two Predators got killed off. It's more or less hinted at that all three of them were relative rookies (I say relative because they weren't exactly new either), so that they make some mistakes or are less impressive than the two Predators from the two movies in that franchise makes some sense and is forgivable. But still, Predators would not go in there claws swinging and just trouncing around aimlessly like they were. They'd be far more calculating. In a straight-up, one-on-one fight, where the Predator has less weapons available, you can make a case that they would have a hard time with a single Alien (though a basic grunt is still far-fetched). But if they had their weaponry, even without the plasma caster, and aren't so stupidly surprised all the time, then one Predator is more than a match for a significant amount of Xenomorphs. Because that's the whole point of it. They think, Aliens swarm. Something this movie missed completely.

I agree with you. As fan of Predator i was really disappointed that two of them got killed by one freaking Xenomorph. Then again the director of this movie is massive Alien fan so i think he wanted to make Xenomorphs better in comparison while downplaying Predator's intelligence and tactics including their sense of honor. Predators are more than capable without their plasma cannons.

If you say that the only remarkably feature of xenomorph is that they swarm you clearly are not a fan of these creatures...Yes. Predators are far more intelligent but aliens are too so saying that predators should win just because intelligence looks more like somebody upset because his or her favorite monster did not win. PS:The last part of the fight was stupid...The predator clearly heard that the strings are getting destroyed but I guess because is a beginner He was thinking that he already win.

@@doktahsnotes3436 I'm a huge Alien fan, and I love the Alien, but the movie Aliens clearly changed the mythos for the creatures, turning them into swarming animals. Intelligent yes, but still basically animals. If a single Colonial marine can defeat numerous Aliens then a Predator should be even more capable. However if you ignore Aliens, and go by the original Alien film the creature was far more threatening. There was even a story-boarded scene where Ripley shot it through the head with a laser pistol and it had no effect on the creature. It was supposed to be a structurally perfect organism, the ultimate survivor, extremely resistant to intense heat or cold, physically durable and almost impossible to kill with its blood being the ultimate defensive adaptation while also being highly intelligent. None of that was true in Aliens where you could kill one with one round from a shotgun. The city hunter in Predator II meanwhile had an entire shotgun magazine emptied into it and recovered.

The practical effects are SO GOOD. Maybe that’s why I love this movie. I have a shit taste for movies; if they have amazing production design, I love it. The puppeteering for the Queen makes me want to cry, it’s so good. Shame the relationship between Alexa and Scar never blossomed. They made a lovely yet badass couple.

This film is extremely (and needlessly) dumb, although it's entertaining enough if you stumble across it late at night on the telly. What does surprise me about it though is that (a) the lead character is a strong, intelligent, attractive black woman, and the film makes no fuss about that (hoorah!), and (b) nobody ever seems to comment on that fact when reviewing the film!

I guess it's cuz we have a strong main character that is intelligent and smart enough to know how to use it, skilled and knowledgeable. The character just also happens to be female and black. And that is why no one really comments about it I guess. If there's been a ton of 'oooh lawdy!' gospel-singing nuttiness straight out some eddie murphy movie.... then it'd have been remembered as the black woman in that movie. Which is kinda sad, when I think about it.

It is a Poor rip off from the Dark Horse Comic... It is barely even original! Right down to the Main Female Heroine being marked as an Honorary Predator at the end - All of this was done by Dark Horse Comics, with the only difference being that their story made far more sense... Dark Horse took the Aliens Universe, The idea of Weyland-Yutani creating colonies on other worlds and amalgamated that with Predator... Humans Colonise a world the Predators use to "Train" - The Predators LAUNCH Alien Eggs to teh Surface not knowing Colonists have now made a barely habitable world fit for Humans... (The Colonisation has changed the entire landscape, meaning Natural Predators of the Xenomorph that would prevent an infestation becoming uncontrollable have also been uprooted or decimated by a change in Atmosphere!) - Also leading to MORE Aliens and many different Varieties as well as the Facehuggers start infecting not just Humans but Biological Life we have bought with us to start Breeding! Other than that, Virtually everything in the movie is a Direct Copy of the Comic... All they did was change the setting and throw in Weyland!!! A total Switch your brain off movie!

On the subject of the Predators not using especially creative tactics or being very smart, it's actually explained in the movie that this is more or less a right of passage kind of deal. By all accounts these Predators are basically teenagers who have just finished training and likely didn't have the experience of the Jungle Hunter or Ghost from the Second movie. Yes it's not a great excuse but it does also show how the test works since Aliens obviously require more than brute force to beat.

The Fan Without a Face If only the flick itself expounded on that. I would watch an AvP about a bunch of young, cocky frat boy type Preds who quickly realize, upon visiting earth for what passes for their collegiate field work, that they’re in over their heads when facing off against Xenos.

The problem with that though is it implies Aliens are one of the weakest things a Predator can hunt thus why they start on them, after all why prove you are a hunter on the strongest thing you can possibly hunt, that would mean everything after that is a downgrade.

@@Barnesofthenorth Not really, Aliens for the most part of manageable when there is one or two of them. We've seen that even ordinary Marines can shoot them to pieces without too much trouble. Remember the Aliens are mainly shown as unstoppable in Alien 1 or 3, and in both instances the characters have no weapons.

This film had a lot of glaring plot holes in it, some of which you pointed out, but my one problem with this movie is at the end when the group of Predators show up and take there comrade, none of them say "Hey maybe this guy has a face hugger in him, we should check it out"? At first I thought they let it slide because they could handle it, but in the sequel they're all dead.

I think the bottle cap is implying that someone has already looted the tomb. Some one (sponsored by coca-cola) had already dug up the tomb. I think we're supposed to assume that this means the artifacts have either been disturbed or stolen. Paul WS Anderson is way too smart for us huh?

the predators in this look goofy as fuck due to the extra teeth, how the mandibles close, the eyes and the skin texture. they really dropped the ball when it comes the predators in this movie that even extends to their makeup effects. funny how the original back in the 80s with a design that was done literally last minute, looks so much better and believable.

Yeah, I'm way late to the party. I only recently found this channel, and I've loved it thus far. But the tagline is meta. It isn't referring to the "we" of the movie humans, but the "we" of the audience. It doesn't matter who wins in the end, the audience loses for having sat through this film.

Actually getting Lance Henrickson in AVP as the CEO of Wayland is more likely a nod to Alien 3, where the "human bishop" appears in the films final act as the man in charge of the of the group of soldiers that arrive to collect the Xenomorph (been a while since I saw Alien 3 and I'm don't remember if the group of soldiers were with the Wayland corperation). Also Alien 3 might where Paul WS. Anderson got the idea behind the Isaac's debacle of Resident Evil: The Final Retcon.

16:30 ok, that complaint is something that actually gets explained in film if you pay attention those are literally teenage to young adult predators, and the whole thing is a sort of coming of age ritual to them; they have to prove themselves. the fact that they are more impulsive, violent and such can all be attributed to that; literally a bunch of predator teens bumbling their way through a test (and fucking up badly)

Actually, as a predator fan I really like this, because it shows there is more to their civilization overall; it fleshes them out by showing even they have their tests, mistakes and impulsive assholes. But I understand this is rather subjective, some people like predator (and even aliens) more as monsters, unknowable, borderline unstoppable forces and the like. I like both from a sci-fi perspective, where they come from, what (in the predators case) their culture is like and such. For someone like me this movie is not that bad (though the human characters and overall way look and such are still bad, I can forgive that one element.)

If you think of all the Alien and Predator films as one, giant franchise, you'll notice that aliens have had a huge impact on us and our culture. The Engineers created human life, the Predators taught humans how to build and Predator technology was reverse-engineered for space flight and turned Weyland-Yutani into a corporate giant.

Actually... this movie makes NEITHER side look good. The Aliens come off as some basic alien-grunts that can just THAT easily be killed, while the Predators looked like over-armored douches that were nothing without their precious little shoulder-cannons. Now, you already pointed out beautifully how bad the Predators look, but really... an ALIEN QUEEN being killed by a human and a Predator? A single Xenomorph is already a good match for a Predator, they embody their exact opposites: Aliens are savage, ferocious and wild, and Predators are honorable, skilled and mastered using their gadgets. But yeah, you... actually made an excellent point in the end. Predator is thrilling, unnerving action, Aliens is Horror. They don't mix. Comparing / Mashing them together is just a dumb concept to begin with.

these movies could have actually delivered more on these fights if the predators had acid resistant weaponry and armour or at the very least acid resistant skin that only suffers mild burns from it instead of being completely eaten through, hell if not im sure they could invent some sort of chamber that sprays them down with a substance that neutralises acid on contact, not being able to injure your opponent when your a primarily melle focused combatant is quite a crippling problem in an action movie

It's the eyes. This predator's eyes are really soft and human looking compared to the one in the original movie. The original had very dark circles to make them look deep and bright, almost glowing, green eyes. This one has soft, blue eyes...for some reason.

The mouth also. The OG Predator's inner mouth is centered top to bottom with about 3 inches of chin and 3 inches from the eyes to the upper lip. The newer goofy looking predator's mouth is about one inch below it's eyes, with 4 or 5 inches of chin.

I think the guy who fell down the hole and had Predators walk past him MAY have been a reference to the first one where Arnie is covered in mud covering his heat signature, I mean it's hardly connected to it and misses the point of that scene so it's the kind of reference Anderson would make. Also there is a reason they took guns, it's a lazy excuse for the Predators being able to kill people as if this was a normal group exploring a tomb nobody would be armed and the predators would only have Aliens to kill making it end pretty quickly. It's not a good reason but it is a reason.

When Lex sais "You're one ugly mo..." that's a Predator 2 reference. Danny Glover said that in the slaughterhouse when he removed the pred's helmet. Quite frankly he too only said "mo..." cuz then the pred came to and it was the Predator that said the full word to him as well. Well.. there you go xD

Here is a way to show the predators having a need to go onsite for weaponry... we are just talking the plasmacaster in the movie which is a cool and great weapon... but the pyramid is SO close quarters it seems like..... more of a useless weapon than anything. Now what could have been interesting is if the predators had only arrived with their cloak, their armor and nothing else. They are meant to arrive like a 'knight' only in their armor and heraldry and then pick up their weapons onsite. One might go for a spear, another the smart-disc slicey-thing, another perhaps a netlauncher and twin wristblade gauntlets. You'd have an instant way of giving each predator personality both by their looks but also their choice of weaponry to show they are still fairly novice and perhaps are still stuck in proficiency with certain weapons - unlike prior shown predators that have more of a 'all weapons are equally functional', AND a show of their preferred weapons that way. Could also lead to one of them dying just as they have all finally geared up cuz of the unplanned early-start to their test by the humans so they hadn't expected an alien already to deal with, or perhaps were simply overconfident cuz 'weapons!'

The pyramid/ziggurat in the flashback was a different pyramid. My guess is they had multiples and at some point the unblooded lost. And the hero Predator was supposed to look "friendlier" as opposed to scary hence the weird mishmash. But I agree the language thing makes no sense unless they're flying the pyramid around to different locations. And the flashbacks are seriously problematic. I doubt those humans would've set off the pyramid. Maybe that's why it was untouched. Or maybe I'm reaching.

The only similarity between the movie and the original comic book source is that the predators dropped eggs on the colony planet to start their hunt, and the main female character teams up with the hunt leader. At the end she is invited to join the hunters, and goes off to visit the predator homeworld.

Actually I think your getting that mixed up with their masks considering in the old AVP books the predator maw didn't protect them and they were still acceptable to alien impregnation, however with their masks on it prevents this which is why usually it would require an alien to incapacitate the predator and remove their mask.....but aliens usually kill the predator rather than impregnate them unless an opportunity is presented. That's why predaliens are not a common creature in the AVP universe.

AVP works much better as a comic book, because people are willing to accept a lot more out there material in a comic. Part of the movie's problem was that they tried to ground it, by bringing it to present day earth. The comics always took place with future humans, and predator game preserve planets... Much more like the Predators movie. I think the movie fails because they weren't willing to take risks, and what we got was far too predictable and basic.

The thing that always got me most about this movie is, both Predator movies made a huge point about the heat, yet this is set in Antartica? Oh well, now that Disney has bought Fox, maybe we can see Aliens vs. Predator. Vs. the Avengers.

I thought "bullet time" was when slow motion is combined with a rotating camera around the subject (like the famous bullet dodging done by Neo in The Matrix). "Slow motion" is when the action is briefly slowed down for dramatic effect. I notice you refer to slow motion as bullet time pretty often, unless I'm wrong about the definitions.

This movie was 50/50 for me. I like AVP (books) since I grew up with the comic and older movies of both series...but this movie down grades both series on a whole. Also to be fair these are young predators that are not blooded yet so they won't act like the usual predators and are in the process of learning to hunt both Aliens (to be honorably blooded) and humans (though they are pointless in this movie since they are not worthy trophies like Arnold and Danny). Anyways I love your review on the movie and you make some very interesting and funny points lol. Keep up the great work

I'm constantly hearing the "they're just young" or"they're in training" excuse for the predators but that still doesnt work for me, mainly because that would mean they've been deliberately written to be shite, and its not an accident which in a way is worse, "in training" or not doesnt matter because they're just cannon fodder for the aliens, its alien VS predator not "aliens remember them arent they cool, oh theres also some predators"

Another thing that bothers me with the chest that is unlocked by putting in "todays date." We, and the "scientists" in the movie, use the Gregorian calendar. The Gregorian calendar was introduced in 1582 AD. The ancient Aztecan calendar was being used for centuries prior to the introduction of the Gregorian calendar. So it makes no sense that the correct combination to open the chest is a date from a calendar that did not even exist when the pyramid was built.

Aliens and predator are both action thrillers about a group of marines facing an alien threat that puts their skills to the test, they could absolutely work together if the people behind the camera had any talent. All they had to do was make aliens again and throw in a predator to spice things up.

I like how this movie has a few scenes that subvert expectations (like twitchy guy giving that speech to the surly Irish guy about how one way or another they’re going to get out only for them to get captured moments later and the woman having a gun which you think will come in handy later but then doesn’t, and bottle cap guy being built up to be a possible love interest for Lex only for him to get killed)

I just think they didnt want the Predators to be overpowered, because the predator from the Arnie movie or even from Predators could easily deal with multiple Aliens in this kind of scenario. They are better equipped and think more logical. So it would be hard to make it a fair fight, without just having them fight hundreds of Xenomorphs. I really like this dumb movie for some reason, so sorry if this comes across as apologetic or something like that :)

I get thats what they were doing, But it doesn't stop the fact that they had the rights to FINALLY! make an Alien vs Predator movie, and they didn't give us Arnies predator they didn't even give us glovers predator, so whats the point? if they weren't gonna respect both franchises why do it at all? and I'm not saying the predators should be treated fairly like some kind liberal utopia nonsense kind of way, I'm merely saying they should use them to they're full potential and give us a film worthy of both franchises and they didn't, they fucked it up.

What i dont like is the first two predators just giving up. The first one who got stab could have still swung at the xenomorph. The second, i don't even know why it just stopped fighting. Also why is the third predators weapon immune to the acid. I dont mind that xenomorph being unique compared to the others but it doesn't make sense for the predators to just give up fighting even on the verge of death
