A wondrous voice (deep and brilliant at the same time), coupled with great musicality and huge emotional depth. A rare combination these days.

@@photo161 thanks!!! We mostly know Hans Hotter's legendary Wotan from 1950s Bayreuth... but the younger Hans Hotter's pitch was so lyrical, as demonstrated by this gem of a recording.

This is just shockingly, magnificently, spectacularly great!! I love his late work in the Solti recordings for their vocal acting. But young Hotter -- what an instrument and what beatiful singing. Thanks for the upload.

It is miraculous that he can sing so beautifully and still give such importance to the words.

I've only heard him on the Solti-Culshaw recording before this, and all I have to say is...WOW!

I heard he sang Wotan in Solti version. Though I still like that wobble sound (I think most likely due to the whole brilliant production covered up some glitches), I have to agree this younger version is much better. Many thanks for sharing this.

Sorry, I don't have that information. But I wiil post some other recordings of the years 42 and 43 in wich Hotter is, as you said, magnificent compared to later recordings, not only in the voice but also in the expression, so deep and profound.

This goes at quite a lick! So wonderful to hear this younger performance. And to compare with later more rounded performances eg the Decca Ring. The one and only true Wotan.

He developed severe asthma, which compromised his vocalism later on, but not his magnificent interpretation of the part. Still, it is wonderful to hear him without the wooliness in the tone caused by his health. But he lived long enough to coach James Morris!
