Comment for beginners like me. At 8:30 Hans should play Be4. You can't take bishop because of Qxh5 checkmate. If Kh6 then Rh8 checkmate. If pawn to g6 then Qxh5. You can't take Queen because of discovered check with bishop on e4. Only move is Kg7 and then Qh8 checkmate. it's a draw because of threefold repetition. The rules are: the threefold repetition rule states that a player may claim a draw if the same position occurs three times during the game. ... The game is not automatically drawn if a position occurs for the third time - one of the players, on their turn, must claim the draw with the arbiter. So Hans has a winning position, miss that move with 2.30 on the clock and decided to claim a draw.

Funny how this guy before cheating accusations was a 90%+ accuracy monster with the quickest FIDE rankings uprise in known history. Now after: he's one of the most inconsistent GMs to ever live. It's quite unbelievable, magic - miraculous even some would say.

His 2700 classic rating has been steady throughout 2022 as he played OTB... is that really suspect? Seriously? Since when is a constant rating suspect? Inconsistency has occurred many times with great players, but somehow they did not cheat, only Hans? Note that we cannot know how often Hans cheated online, but we are fairly certain that Magnus, Hans, Hikaru, Rapport, So, Yoo, etc are not cheating OTB. Carlson recently blundered a winning game (to a player rated lower than Hans I believe) and ended up losing, and nobody called the opponent a cheat. Why? Because the opponent was not Hans. If the "Hans cheats OTB" people did not know the opponent and thought it was Hans they would certainly accuse. Since it was not Hans they ignore it. 90% accuracy. I know there is some standard way of analyzing games (and the algorithm changes periodically) but each game has to be analyzed separately. Short games, complex games, etc. When people stop taking some spreadsheet from an unknown blogger filled in with percentages from an unknown algorithm with "trust my hidden algorithm" written all over it the statisticians take notice. It's quite believable. Not miraculous statisticians say.

@@scottekoontz It's called circumstantial evidence. Hans labelled himself. If he had said I cheated several times as a youngster online, it would have looked a lot better. A cheater saying I only cheated twice, when Chesscom says more likely 100 times, doesn't look good. (they only caught him twice). BUT Hans confirmed that the software from Chesscom is very good and accurate. If we have a known thief and something gets stolen, then it is obvious to suspect the thief. The difference of strength in his game is too high. Levi said if he played 100 games vs a 2100-2200 player, he would win them all. I think Magnus uses the same logic. Hans outplayed him! Magnus didn't lose due to some combo mistake. He got outplayed, and that is more or less impossible for Hans to do that. All these games confirm that it was not the same "player", that's called circumstantial evidence.

@@jacks-back Many 2700s have beaten Magnus (some recently) and in all cases Magnus was outplayed and/or blundered. Thus we all know it is possible to do this, and Magnus did not cry foul and make a big deal out of it except for one notable game. Levi quote is silly. Statistically a 2300 would not win (tie or lose) MANY times in 100 games against a 2200 player (36) or a 2400 player (24). If he said this, then he would be laughably wrong over 1/3 of the time. Cheating online is very different than cheating again and again for several months OTB. Beating a higher ranked player is not circumstantial, losing to a lower ranked player is not circumstantial. "Circumstantial" people cannot see past the insanity of claiming one expert player is also expert in technology and somehow making several very fast moves in a row when supposedly communicating moves to an outside source, calculating an answer (using how many engines, how many depths?) and sending it back, deciphering it, and making the move within seconds in many cases. And one player is able to do this? The 100% games are BS and debunked by many. It was an unknown algorithm from an anonymous source that cannot be reproduced, and what we know about that algorithm is that you simultaneously use several engines, many depths per engine, and an unknown number of CPUs, and then check to see if one of the three top choices of ANY of those combos match the players' move. Several of the supposed Hans' "100% accuracy" games were re-played online with an engine running to "prove" cheating, and some of the moves never appeared even after waiting a few minutes of engine run. Clearly not 100%. Some were called "odd" of "unorthodox" moves. Huh? Some were considered blunders according to some engine... so 100%? Run all 2022 OTB GM games against one engine, pick one depth, and a set # of CPUs without the player names present. Rank them and find the cheaters... good luck since one player will land on top of most lists, and it's not Hans.

hello. as the buzzer manufacturer this is a well known problem. buzz buzz buzz means your position is a draw via repetition. buzz buzzz buzz means your position is winning. he probably coughed during the second buzzz and hence thought it was drawn via repetition. i believe a change in code is needed, however the buzzer was designed to not emit wifi waves to avoid cheat detection device

Hikaru is in Blitz / Rapid, because he is expected to win as well. Nepo and Ding are expected to win all the time as well, one of them being the next WC. And ultimately everyone there is under immense pressure, because they have to make it to the money, otherwise it's a high loss for a lot of people because of the traveling costs. And the Hans drama is over already, nobody asks him anymore about his cheating past and I see more games of the Hikaru, Magnus and other Super GM's focused on and analysed than Hans' games. Hans increased his rating surprisingly fast and does not stand a chance in a field of Super GM's. That's the reality. If the Arbiter just gets over and with one blink of an eye sees that he is winning, how does someone who beats the GOAT with Black does not see it at all and forces a Draw. It's remarkable.

White had a passed pawn which if he pushes, then there is no hope for black. Black sees that he can exchange a rook for a bishop, 2 pawns, and make a passed pawn. Material wise it can be similar and having his own passed pawn creates counter play in an otherwise hopeless position for black. I think it was not a bad move.

Wow! Forget the repetition draw controversy, the important thing of this game is, as others have revealed and commented already, Be4 check! That is an awesome move! probably it would be the best move of the year 2023 had Hans found and played it. My God what a brilliancy move that is. Hans totally missed it. He was so focused on getting a draw that he totally missed the brilliancy move Be4+. This happens often to many top level players. By the way, GM Maghsoodloo played excellent, however he made a horrible move H5. Players remember never to make this terrible move. You weaken that pawn that white can then attack and take freely, as it nearly happened in this game. As soon as black played H4, i thought "Oh no, he's blundered that pawn!" the pawn becomes too weak for black to defend later on in the game. So lesson to learn is: be careful to not play pawn moves too fast or too careless early in the game; and don't try to drive major pieces away with pawns unless you are certain of the following: 1. your pawn structure will not be compromised, weakened or fragmented in moving the pawn, 2. the pawn or pawns being moved can be safe afterward, and 3. there are sufficient reasons justifying moving the pawns from their otherwise secured structure or original position. Here in this game GM Maghsoodloo was winning, in fact he was so much better than GM Hans that at one point I thought that there was no way that black could lose. After black had managed to post his knight on C4 and with the other knight doubling on and controlling the C4 square, black had superiority over the board and there was practically nothing that white could do. Black's move of rook takes bishop, however, came as a completely surprise. My God what was black thinking here!? Suddenly after playing so fine black decides to trade rooks for a bishop and pawn??? say what?? yet as it turned out after that trade black managed to win yet another pawn in the center, clearly giving black full advantage and a totally winning position. now black has a center pawn that is isolated and capable and ready to march to promotion. For students, experts, masters, international masters and gms, pause the game at 7:24 and think and decide which pawn is better for black, the b or the e pawn? taking on the b pawn seems to be a good choice as it removes the only isolated pawn that white has, which can give black some problems if white decides to push it. but then why did black decided to take the e pawn first? probably black realized that the b pawn would fall anyway, and so logically he takes the e pawn believing that white can't defend its b pawn after all. unfortunately black changed plans and decided to go after white's king and this caused for the three consecutive moves of the queen that allowed the draw by repetition. Hans' rook played somewhat timid, and the only objective that it managed to accomplish was at the very end when it took control of the 8th rank and threatened black's king with a possible mate by white's queen and bishop play. but that never happened and white was not interested in mating black. White was distracted by black's threats of mating its king. This is what caused GM Hans to focus strictly on getting the draw and once it happened he immediately called the arbiters. Judging from GM Hans' behavior, how quickly he jumped at getting that draw and called for the arbiters to intervene, stopping the clock right away, it is clear that GM Hans was afraid of GM Maghsoodloo's game and that he felt his position was worse. GM Maghsoodloo must have been wanting a draw also, because he was leading and doing most of the attacking at that point, but he decided to repeat queen moves. Nevertheless, a very nice game by two top level GMs. Hans as always never fails to entertain, although that may not have been his intention. The audience is always expecting fun, exciting, entertaining and controversial games from Hans. Today they got a few dramatics in chess and that is exactly what the audience wants to see. @@arbo3495 Hi. Carlsen did not say anything close to :neimann cheated in the over the board game against me. Carlsen never said that. Carlsen did concede the game to neiman and shook his hand. The next day Carlsen withdrew from the tournament. He never mentioned neimann's name.

There's alot of pressure and tension in blitz chess matches which can lead to miscalculations. Some players can handle the pressure better than others. It looks like Niemann gets very uptight in blitz chess.

That is 100% incorrect. Only 1 player needs to request a draw when situations like this one warrant it. Other player did not ever agree to a draw unlike your comment. He was told by the arbiter it is a draw - that Hans request was being granted.

Hans blundered an unstoppable mate by not moving his bishop out the way of his queen. He was still in a winning position, but after previously displaying cockiness after his opponents rook sacrifice/blunder and making this blunder of his own, his emotions took over and he decided to request a draw after a three move repetition. His opponent and the arbiters were confused because he made the decision to draw in a winning position solely based off of emotion, and Hans may have appeared to be confused because he was emotional and was trying to clarify that he was in fact allowed to draw in this manner. He puts up 3 fingers and says three questioningly to his opponent.

Black is very solid with queen and bishop pair plus a passed pawn and in a blitz or rapid it is almost impossible for white to win such a position and Niemann knowing this wisely claims a draw where Parhram was even willing to carry on.

At some point Hans had a check with Be4+, instead of Qe3, which wins the game on the spot for white. Hans didn't see it and it allowed Pahram to bring back his light squares bishop to defend his king's area.

Listen dude, this is blitz not classical and time is more important than best moves. These players do not miss anything in normal time control. Parham is a 2700 elo player which means very strong grandmaster.

@@kevinwellwrought2024 I've been reading comments looking for the relevant fact... this is blitz? fr? they need to show the clock because the skips make it look like classical. And in any case time is critical, easy for everyone to "spot" mate in 3 when a computer tells you but if you're on clock you can miss it. I have no defense for him if he cheats, not a fan even, I'm just against blatantly poor game analysis.. But even before the game he won with Magnus everyone was saying he had very hit and miss play OTB, hence why they thought it was suspicious that he would randomly do well. It's possible, literally speculating having never looked at more than two of his games, he plays very creative strategic plays but sucks at tactics, so sometimes strategic plays work out so well the tactics can be weak. But it can also be that the strategy doesn't work. Things like this are possible.

"Good" result vs weak players and long formats (time to cheat), poor results in fast formats and strong opponents. The "Person" that beat Magnus is not the same player that played these last 3 tournaments. Chess does indeed speak for itself.

Yes, of course, many commentators now feel encouraged to ponder the capabilities of an HN. Dear chess friends, there are hundreds of such examples from other GMs. Ivanchuk once missed a mate in 2... etc. Analyze regular GM games of pre computer times. With a computer analysis you can often only shake your head. It is easy to talk smart. Come out of your bubble and be more fair!

If that happens so often, then pls show me a "rising young star" that beats the WC and then blunders 3 tournaments with Mate in 2, Mate in 3, blunders the opening vs an IM and then resigns. Blunders, a pawn endgame that every Super GM can do blind! Please show me just one example apart from Hans! The "person" that played Magnus was not the same "person" playing these last three tournaments. Nobody ever played that well and then that BADLY within 2 months.

@@jacks-back 1. I don't know anyone who says that MC vs HN was a particularly outstanding chess game. MC simply played badly. 2. the history of chess is full of theoretical wins. There is a saying: The most difficult thing in chess is to win a won game ;-) 3. i find many GMs often play completely different even during a tournament...so now i don't know why you think a GM can't have ups and downs within months. After all, they are human beings! 4. for me personally it's not really a difference if someone misses a mate in 3 or 4 moves, or if he blunders a piece. According to your expectations, this should not happen to a GM either. Sorry, but the reality is different, especially in rapid chess or blitz. In general, I think it's good that MC has drawn attention to cheating in chess. BUT how he did it is for me absolutely unacceptable and unworthy of a world champion. This is just my personal opinion.

@@jacks-back You realize this is rapid and blitz, don't you? It's completely different. Carlsen is not unbeatable and he'll lose some in the Tata Steel tournament. He has lost to Niemann (twice), Gukesh, Erigaisi, Abdusattarov, Praggnanandhaa (five times). That is all in the last year. In blitz, a GM missed mate in one, and it wasn't in a time scramble. Kramnik missed mate in one in classical. It happens. Do you think in the history of chess, a person beating a world champion in classical, cannot lose badly at blitz? Niemann scored 12/21, which is a decent score. Yes... it is possible to play blitz badly, no matter who you are. You can sit there in the comfort of your home and judge a GM and explain what they should be able to do, but blitz is a different animal. As someone said, time pressure makes fools of us all, and blitz continues to fool us. Niemann is a legitimate 2700 in classical. His rapid and blitz ratings are lower. Nothing abnormal about it. I can assure you that there were many other players with worst misses than Hans, but of course, he is getting the spotlight shone on him.
