In today's episode of The Paint Show I want to share with you Hansa Yellow Medium, by Daniel Smith!
🎨 HANSA YELLOW MEDIUM TUBE 🎨
This paint was completely under my radar for a while.
I originally got it together with Daniel Smith Primary set, which I always highly recommend.
The funny fact is that I dislike the combination of the paints in the set. I don't think it's a beautiful combination (Hansa Yellow Medium + French Ultramarine + Perylene Red).
However, each of the tubes is valuable in its own right, and it's much more cost-effective to get them in the set.
As I fear "cool" yellows, I didn't really give this one enough love, but after reading Daniel Smith's description, and playing around with it, I realise it's more of a neutral yellow than a cool one.

In the video I compare these stats with the Hansa Yellow Light paint. I find they are mostly similar, but the Medium has better lightfastness (and thus a little more expensive).

I'm very pleased with how this paint looks and will try to incorporate it more in future works.

I adore middle yellows. When I made my first palette, I picked a PY3 and PY65 to have a cool and a warm yellow. While I now have all three (cool, middle, warm) on my large studio palette, when I'm making a limited palette, I'll just pick a PY97 or PY154 middle yellow. I love them!

I really like your Paint Shows. I especially like the ones on colors I don't have and consider to get. These shows have helped me to decide whether or not I should buy (you've saved me some money!). Also, I'm a big fan of Daniel Smith.

Literally one of my favorite yellows; I've got a couple tubes lying around. Brightest yellow in the world baby, except maybe Mission Gold's Quinaphthalone Yellow Light. If I wasn't using that, I'd totally be all over this.

Daniel Smith has a Quinopthalone Yellow that I just love! You might want to check it out for a cooler yellow that isn't greenish. I use it in place of Lemon Yellow. Also Schmincke's Pure Yellow is beautiful for the same reasons. I also love that Schmincke colors are ready to go to work with the lightest touch of water. Daniel Smiths take a bit of coaxing so I generally spritz the palette with water to wake it up. (I don't know how you work with having your colors as you say "contaminated" with each other. I just can't do that! To each his or her own!)

I really like this paint mixed with D.S. Pyrrole Red and also with D.S. Cobalt Blue.

FGL is chlorinated butanamide dye. It’s a yellow powder that can be used in paints, coatings, plastic, and printing ink applications. I guess it’s pigment. ✌️😊

I have Hansa Yellow Medium which came with my Essential 7 set from Susie Short/Daniel Smith. I wonder if a color's temperature depends upon how a person sees it? For me, the Hansa Yellow Medium does not work well for sunsets; but, is awesome for landscapes. When I look at your demonstration, Hansa Yellow Medium looks like a cool color. Much like mine, it seems to have a green bias. On the other hand, New Gamboge works great for sunsets; but, not so much for landscapes, except in certain situations. New Gamboge has a bias towards orange. That is usually how I tell whether a yellow is more cool or more warm.

Wokeness 93, I do not believe that it is; but, there are other sets in Daniel Smith's store. If you live in the Seattle area of Washington state, you may even find more sets available in the physical store. I bought my initial set in 2005, I think and since then I've only replaced tubes as they got empty. This is Susie Short's split primary palette set as it currently is, I believe: Hansa Yellow Medium Quinacridone Rose French Ultramarine Blue New Gamboge Pyrrol Scarlet Phthalo Blue (GS) Quinacridone Burnt Orange When I got my set, Phthalo Blue was just Phthalo Blue but it had the same pigment number as the Phthalo Blue (GS). Also, in my set, I had Pyrrol Orange instead of Pyrrol Scarlet for my warm red. I have collected sever extra tubes of paints from Daniel Smith over the years. I don't have all of the watercolors that the company makes, not even close; but, no matter which paints I try from other brands, I still go back to Daniel Smith.

Hansa Yellow Med. is actually a neutral pigment -- it can warm up when mixed with Quinac. Gold, a touch of burnt sienna, or Pyrrol crimson. It also changes appearance depending on the color next to it -- I love its versatility.

DS Hansa Yellow Medium is one of Jane Blundell's favorite yellows. I have DS Mayan Yellow which is also a beautiful mid-yellow. Have you tried the PY150 yellows? W&N calls it Transparent Yellow and Sennelier's is Yellow Lake. They almost glow.

I love the avocado sketch will all the different colors. Your paint show has sold me more colors... Daniel Smith should give you a cut. I am using Hansa Yellow Light PY3 as my main coolest yellow. I also like Azo yellow, which is a tiny bit warmer, and stronger tinting power. But now I want to try this one too. I want all the yellows!

I was at the art shop yesterday and bought Hansa Yellow Deep (spotty memory... sigh) and Nickel Azo Yellow. The Azo yellow looks really greenish but produces some amazing oranges AND amazing greens. Pretty interesting color. I did a color swatch right away. Hansa Yellow Deep looks a bit like New Gamboge. So another single pigment orange/yellow I can use to replace New Gamboge along with isoindolinone yellow (a new favorite).

Yes, that definitely seems to be the case with this yellow. Oddly enough, I didn’t see the same result with my Schmincke lemon yellow. It just stays.. lemony 😛

in my travel palette, hansa yel med is my go to color, in the studio i bring out schmincke lemmon and hansa yel dark or the "old " quin gold. cad yellow is too opaque

I agree on the opaqueness, trying to give more attention to that aspect and see what works best for me (: In the past I wouldn’t have even thought about it 😉

Very interesting how different the 2 mixed greens are, from only a slight difference in the yellow used to mix it.

The difference comes from the different blues 😉 But yes - every little change can have a HUGE influence!

Question: do you plan to go crazy and start trying the "fun" DS paints, like Moonglow, Cascade Green and friends? They are among my favorites for the things they do that surprise me! I'm enjoying The Paint Show a lot, also you are helping me become a better painter overall! Just yesterday I was working on an older painting I had done but didn't love and solved several issues that came up using techniques you demonstrated. I still don't love the end result but I like it more than I did and learned from the effort! Thanks, and keep going!

I was really surprised by the Ultramarine and Hansa Yellow Medium green it produced. Very mute, I thought they would marry better;)

Haha I expected it! Because of the red that’s in the ultramarine, it’s always hard to produce a “purer” green with it. It always grays out a little 😉

Thank you! (: I’m using a Sony Handicam, PJ-108 I believe (the one with the built-in projector, it’s a bit of an older model). I’m usually using the camera’s mic, but when I’m recording narrations and such I’m using my Audio Technica mic. I think it’s ATR-2100.

Very informative video, I know this has nothing to do with this video,... But, I do mixed media art, I recently bought Rembrandt soft pastels, do you have any videos on them? I don't use them in the " traditional" way, but am still curious about the proper way to use them!! Thank you!😘😘

Py3 in an Indian yellow!? Isn't py3 the common lemon yellow pigment.. I have just a lemon yellow in an otherwise split primary palette.. Trying to decide if a warm yellow is really necessary or not😄

Indeed it seems they may have a mistake on their website (: It could be PY65 or something similar. I think it comes down to your preference. I love mixes that warm yellows produce 😁

[Have just spotted this vid now, in Aug!] Great stuff, lots of info here - thanks Liron! To my eye, the biggest characteristic of PY97 is that the masstone is a different hue than a light application, the former being more toward the orange than the latter. Personally, I've opted for a pair of ylws: PY154 (mine is Holbein), and [DS] Hansa Ylw Dp PY65, since they're both pretty uniform between masstone and lights. But if I needed/wanted to use only one ylw, this PY97 is probably the one I'd opt for. We're all learning as we go; your vids are a great meeting place for sharing! :^) If my palette had a 3rd ylw (aside from yellow-y earth-tones), it would probably be PY150, since it's such an interesting & useful mixer - and transparent, to boot. You can make your own Quin Gold with it, for instance. But if I really needed a cool lemon, it'd be either PY3 for intensity, or PY175 if I wanted utmost transparency and lightfastness. Transparent yellows are rare and precious! Cheers from Montreal, Liron.
