Here I am checking the voltage on the control side of an ignition coil, I am also showing the current ramps of that same ignition coil. Using a Hantek 1008A.

That's a great waveform you captured there Enrique, you forgot to mention the settings on the Hantek scope, for those of us who are barely learning.

+Tabo Racho You are absolutely right and I do apologize. In this case since I am measuring the control side or ground side of an ignition coil I will need to have a 20:1 attenuator between the scope and my leads. Due to this you need to tell the program that you have an attenuator attached by selecting 20:1 on the drop down menu where is normally says "x1". Then you would adjust your time base to 1 ms per division and the voltage to 100 volts per division. As for the CC-65 low amp probe you would select CC-65(20A) with the same time base (obviously) with 2 amps per division.
@867530919748 жыл бұрын
are you using an Attenuator for the primary signal and if so what ratio. will a 20:1 work ok for automotive primary coils?
@Enrique_Osorio8 жыл бұрын
+Concerned Citizen I am using an attenuator. The attenuator I am using is a 20:1. Since the voltage spikes for a primary ignition circuit can be as high as 400 volts a 20:1 will do the job very well.

Enrigue, I sure appreciate your video. I don't understand much about scopes, but I want to learn. I want to do what scanner danner does, but let me ask you? Will the 1008c scope give me the detail to see petals and what not? What gizmo do I need to buy for the high voltage checks? I have an amp probe but I don't know if I can connect it. You are a good guy and I appreciate your thirst for knowledge and understanding. I have that same thirst. Will you please help with some detailed information for a rookie and whether or not I should buy a 1008c. Thank you.

I just bought a cc-65 low amp clamp which I'm using with my 1008c, and the signal is supper noisy, even when the clamp isn't connected to anything. I see the signal on yours is pretty clean, which makes me wonder if maybe I got a defective clamp?
@Enrique_Osorio6 жыл бұрын
Check to make sure the reset button is not stuck and make sure the battery is fully charged.
@sailorbob741336 жыл бұрын
I put in a brand new battery and also ran the calibration routine on the 1008c after it was on a while. What I saw was that this thing seems to have no shielding at all. If I put the body of the cc65 close to the coil pack while reading the ignition current ramp, it picks up the voltage waveform as interference. If I do a throttle snap the software will sometimes lose communication with the scope, and on one vehicle laying the body of the cc65 on top of the distributor while trying to read the current ramp would cause the whole computer to crash. Similar problems with the HT25 secondary pickup, although not quite as bad.
@Enrique_Osorio6 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I am not sure what the problem is. It sounds like the clamp is picking up a lot of interference, as you mentioned. I think the only fix in this situation is to keep it away from places that emit radiation. Sorry I could not be more help.

How do you like the Hantek cc-65 low amp clamp? Does it work well and give good current ramp graphing and accurate readiings? I'm buying it for my 4 channel OTC Solarity/ Thanks
@Enrique_Osorio9 жыл бұрын
+buzzerauto I do like the clamp. I get great current ramps with low noise. I use it a lot with my Hantek as well as my voltmeter. I set my voltmeter to milli-volts to get the most accurate reading. I am not sure what the input is for the OTC but know that the Hantek CC-65 has a BNC connector. You may need an adapter.
@mechtechtools8389 жыл бұрын
+Enrique Osorio Do you use the hantek low current clamp with your new pico scope or do you use the pico low amp clamp? If so have you compared current ramps and digital readings on the different current clamps?
@Enrique_Osorio9 жыл бұрын
+buzzerauto I use the Pico clamp due to the way the unis are converted in the software. Is just easier. I see no functional difference between the Pico and the Hantek clamps. I assume the Pico will last me longer due to its construction but I have not seen any difference as far as waveforms go. Relatively speaking we in the automotive world deal with much slower signals than most people who deal with electronics. Maybe there is a difference at higher frequencies but as far as current ramps for ignition coils and injectors i see no difference.

In my car, Toyota Corona with 4AFE engine 1993, there is not current ramp limit (like a right angel triangle). at idle it is 5amps and at higher RPM it decreases to 3 to 3.5 amp. its distributor has a six wire and a two wire connectors. IGT and IGF signals are same rectangle type. NE and G signals are also normal. is it normal to have no limit primary current ramp? or i have to check any other thing?

im trying to learn scope setup but your connected to contol side of distrubtor which cyclinder is this wave form
@Enrique_Osorio5 жыл бұрын
It is monitoring all of the cylinders. Most distributors have one control circuit and one ignition coil and the distributor distributes the spark to the cylinder that needs it. This means that monitoring at the distributor you will see the signals going to ALL of the cylinders.
@egtreadway42325 жыл бұрын
@@Enrique_Osorio thats great info. so if one cyclinder has a problem what could i exspect to see. thanks
@Enrique_Osorio5 жыл бұрын
@@egtreadway4232 Unfortunately, you will not see much on this waveform if you have a problem in one cylinder. You may occasionally see a glitch but mostly you will just see the other 3 good cylinders with their good waveforms. Fortunately there is a way to see an individual cylinder's waveform by only making a small modification to this setup. You will need a way to identify when the cylinder you are interested in is firing. You can use a probe like an HT25 which will wrap around the spark plug wire of the cylinder you are interested in and trigger off the signal from the HT25. This will ensure that the waveforms you are looking at correspond to the cylinder you are interested in. If you are unsure what a trigger is watch my "Hantek Scope Basics" video for more info. Link is below. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqeUpY1ur7J1i6s Also, you do not need an HT25 to use the secondary waveform as a trigger. You can use a plain old banana plug. I showed this in my "Hantek 1008 Secondary Ignition Waveform" video. (Link Below) In that video I am observing the secondary waveform of a Coil-On-Plug ignition coil, not a system with a distributor, but the idea still works with distributor ignition systems. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnKvm55naKl3n7M

will you be able to measure the burn times with a hantek scope?
@Enrique_Osorio8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Canty Yes you can but indirectly. What I mean by this is that there is no measurement from the drop down menu that directly measures burn time. Instead you would need to measure it by pausing the waveform and use the grid in the background to measure the burn time. For example, in this video the yellow trace is the secondary ignition waveform. I have the time base setup to 500 microseconds per division, so that means going across the waveform each dotted line on the grid is 500 microseconds in time. This means the burn time is approximately .7 milliseconds or 700 microseconds.
@chriscanty82148 жыл бұрын
Where would I start my count to measure?
@Enrique_Osorio8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Canty On this video it is the yellow trace that shows the secondary ignition waveform. The large spike you see is the peak kiloVolts. This is the amount of voltage necessary to start the spark between the spark plug gap. Once the spark has started the molecules of air and fuel that are conducting the spark become ionized and require much less voltage to maintain a spark. That is the burn time of the waveform. It is that flat part right after the huge spike but before the little wavy line that then drops down to a low voltage. So to measure the burn time you start at the spike and count over to the wavy line right before it drops to low voltage near zero.
