Looks like a good way to check these coil on plug set-up. You should be able to find a ignition caused missfire. The square wave would show you a ECM failure while the secondary would show a coil or plug failure. Nice little trick.

Another neat trick, take an old abs sensor, or any inductive sensor, and hook up to your scope, with positive and negative cable to the sensor, then it will read the inductive current also.

Yo estoy pensando conseguirme una antena para scanner de los que captan las frecuencias de la policia para conectarla a un cable y al osciloscopio Hantek. Yo estoy seguro que se podra visualizar los oscilogramas de encendido secundario de una manera rapida. Pero tendre que aterrizarla a tierra para evitar sorpresas con las bobinas de encendido que esten arqueando a tierra y no quemar el osciloscopio.

Hey Enrique Osorio ! First I want to say, thank you for the great vidios! You are explaining very good. I have learned how to get my Hantek 1008 to work and properly from your videos ! The only problem that I've had is with the Secondary Ignition Probe. The scope freezes every time I try to connect the probe to spark plug cable with the clamp on ground on battery. Have you had this problem with your Hantek? I think that my probe or scope might have defect.

In one of your reply's where you're talking about the HT-25, you mentioned " the Hantek is pre-programmed to use this tool". Can you give me some more information on this? +craig shipman You would use the x10000 option on the setting menu on the right to get your waveform. If that does not work, play around with the voltage settings, the time base and the trigger. Sometimes it takes a little bit of effort to get a good waveform, but once you have your settings down it works beautifully. Another thing is that different cars will require different settings.

La idea es que si usted usa una sonda de voltaje regular y lo pones sobre una bobina es posible que el osciloscopio puede reconocer el senal y puede ser una indicacion si la bobina esta funcionando bien.

I can get a good spark signal on the coil wire but none on the sparkplug wire. Tried the clamp at the plug and several places but no help. Any ideas.

What I have noticed is that most PicoScopes use USB 3.0, so as long as your tablet is running WIndows, meets the minimum hardware requirements, has the necessary memory and drive space and a USB 3.0 port, you should be good to go.

To be perfectly honest I have no idea. I got the idea from the picoscope software where they recommended a 4mm banana plug to do this very test IF you did not have the dedicated probe. I have not tried to do it with an alligator clip but if I get the opportunity I will try and let you know how it goes.

1 millisecond per division for time. As for the vertical, it is going to depend on how good a signal you can. You are going to have to test and adjust to see which values work best.

That's a pretty nice trick, you should be careful though. ScannerDanner has a video on TS'ing COP ignition issues while using a WyzeProbe and the probe acted like a lighting rod for the spark from a bad wire and almost blew up his oscilloscope - twice! Luckily he had it grounded and it just froze the software.

jnarez1 For a DIYourselfer a Hantek is a great choice. A Pico is a bit too pricey for any one who is only using it as a hobby. You would be surprised how often you need more than two channels, especially once you start using accessories such as current clamps.

Make sure that you have the trigger set correctly. The trigger is the arrow that is on the right side of the waveform screen. Make sure to select the trigger channel on the settings on the right as well. The trigger should be within the range that you expect the signal to be in.

You run into any issues measuring with the clamp-on probe they supply? Snap throttle tests seem to be locking the program up on me.

Which clamp on probe? The one to measure current or the one to measure the voltage of the spark plug wires? If you are using it to measure ignition coil current, then you may need to check that you route your leads carefully. They are very susceptible to noise. If the leads are anywhere near the ignition coils then errors occur. If you are using the clamp for the ignition coil wires, try routing the cable so only the clamp is near the spark plug wire, again noise can be a problem. A simple stiff wire shaped like a curvy S hung on the hood latch striker is a good place to hang wires to keep them away from sources of noise. Let me know if this helps.

Enrique muchas gracias for sharing your knowledge and replying to my previous question. I have found with my hantek that when probing wires next to each other you can get what I think is inductive interference so the waveforms can mimic the whichever is the strongest. In the case I an thinking of, I was probing a primary COP and on the signal and earth trace I was picking up the same waveform as the batt feed, except it was in the mV range unlike the true trace in the battV range. Have u ever noticed this? Also, I am still struggling to get a clean secondary trace. Lots of hash using the hantek clamp probe with batt earth? Puzzling that u get a better trace using a banana plug for pick up? Really great vids. Thanks heaps! Arios from Australia amigo!

+Alex Messina Not sure why you are getting that signal. Perhaps it is your probes. I know my homemade probes will get interference unless I keep them far away from anything that has a lot of voltage or current running through them. I keep in my tool box some aluminum foil that I attached a wire with a clip for grounding to shield some of my probes from ignition coils. Could help.

Hey man awesome video I have a couple questions, first off to measure secondary ignition waveforms with this scope did you need the attenuator? I know voltage spikes are in the KV's and the attenuator is only rated for 300v max so maybe you could explain that to me? The secondary ignition waveform I am measuring is being done indirectly. Most secondary ignition waveforms are measured indirectly. What this means is that there is NO physical connection between my probe and the secondary circuit of the ignition coil. What I am measuring is the electromagnetic signals that are coming off the coil, which is inducing a voltage in the probe. Think about it this way, let say you want to see how hot an oven is, but the measuring device is your hand. You obviously can not touch the walls of the oven directly but you can hover your hand over the oven and get an idea of how hot the oven is. It is kind of like that. The voltages that are induced in the probe by the coil are low so an attenuator is not necessary. As for the tablet, I am using a micro USB to USB adapter otherwise known as an OTG adapter to connect the Hantek to my tablet. The tablet is a Dell Venue 8 Pro running Windows 10 Home Edition. Sam de technician I have another video in which I am checking the primary voltage and the ignition coil current on a car with a distributor which is similar to what I am doing in this video. If you would like a link let me know. To answer your question more completely you could do the same thing I am doing in this video, the only difference is that you would place the 4mm male banana plug parallel with one of the ignition wires preferably as close to the distributor as possible but while also trying to stay away from the other ignition wires. Using this method you can get a decent secondary ignition waveform. Just be very careful, risk of shock is high. I would ground a screwdriver with a jumper lead to ground and test around the ignition wires for any ignition/spark leaks before attempting this test. You could hurt yourself, your scope and possibly even your computer I prefer to use the HT-25 Igniton Clamp. It is an accessory/probe I bought off ebay and the Hantek is pre-programmed to use this tool. Simply plug in the probe, place the ground clamp on a good body ground and the probe clamp around one of the ignition wires. You will get a great waveform with peak KV, dwell time and a spark line.

Stephen Jackson The sampling rate is indeed 2.4 million samples per second and its constantly doing that as you are taking your measurements. I think the Hantek is a great tool, with a little patience and studying it will do wonders.

I wish they were just up front and said Software blows so don't try recording and too get English you have to delete Chinese language file. +mayo cruise All I did was clip the red alligator clip off one of the leads that came with the scope and replaced it with a 4mm male banana plug. You can find a 10 pack on eBay for about $4.

Hey there, you just need to set the trigger below your waveforms. Its the tiny yellow arrow on the left of the screen. Pull it down to below your waveform and it will stay steady. hope it helps

Isn't the ignition secondary VERY HIGH voltage?? At 5v per division. it appears not to exceed 30V. Shouldn't it be closer to 30KV ??? Or is your blue channel at a higher volt per division than the transistor wave?? THANKS MUCH!!!!

Si el Surface RT tiene Windows y un USB port, debe de trabajar pero nunca lo he probado en esa machina. Yo quite el video por que muchas gentes me han puesto quejas que no sirbe el processo. Tengo un nuevo processo que incluye bajando el software y drivers de mi pagina de google. Vas a necesitar un link y ese link va a estar vivo por 24 horas. Okay Alan Aqui esta el link. Solo bajas lo que yo le digo. 2)Baja el programa setup.exe 3)Asegurase que no este connectado su oscilloscope 4)Corre el programa cuando se ha bajando. Es possible que se baja como un zip file, tienes que extractarlo. 5)Cuando el software ya esta puesto en su computadora baja el folder que se llama "driver". Hay varios files en ese folder, baja todos los files y guardoles en un folder y fijase donde esta ese folder. Este file si es un zip y tiene que ser extractado. 6)Ahora abre el 'device manager' en su computadora si no sabes como habrirlo busca en google y alli hay muchas instrucciones. 7)Fijase muy bien en que esta connectado en el device manger y connecta su Hantek a su computadora por USB. Despues que lo connectas debe de aparecir un nuevo device con un nombre exacto o similar a YDJ-2088. 8) En ese haga "right click" y oprime "update drivers". De alli le va ha preguntar si quieres que los drivers haga update automaticamente o manual. Escoje manual y derigie la computadora a los files que bajastes y extractastes de los drivers. 9) Ahora todo debe servir correctamente. Si tienes problemas me contactas y yo le ayudo.

Memory depth of your scope is only 4k, is it enough to pause and play back waveforms? I plan to buy dso3102 with 256M memory, 1GSa/s sampling rate and 8bit vertical resolution. Do you think it will miss many details compared to 12bit? Thanks for nice videos.

+Mambre Khachatryan You can pause a waveform but you can not play it back. What ever you pause it on is what you get. The zoom function does not give you anymore detail. As far as the resolution 8 bit can hold 2^8 = 256 numbers while 12 bit can hold 2^12 = 4096 numbers. There is definitely a big difference which may cause you to lose some clarity. I can not say for sure since I have never used a scope with 8 bits of vertical resolution.

Aubrey Robinson They are used for different things. You will need both depending on the circuit you are testing. For most applications you will be using the low amp probe. The high amp probe is almost exclusively used fpr charging system and stating systems.

Hola Enrique, i have this oscilloscope but i dont know how to make the waveform steady, it moves all around and most of the time i can't capture it, just sometimes it jumps here and there, then dissappear, i tried auto normal and single, setting the time all i can do dont get that or any signal steady, please let me know what i am doing wrong, thanks

+carlitosgy6 You need to set the trigger. The trigger is adjusted by the little arrow at the right of the screen on this scope. The trigger may vary on your scope. Set the trigger within the limits of the voltage range of the signal you are acquiring. Lots of luck.

It has a lightning port so I would need a lightning to usb adapter. My biggest concern is the drivers/software; I'm not sure if I could make them work with IOS. Thanks in advance! Josh

Joshua Trenge I do not think IOS is compatible with the software that Hantek has. I have not seen an option for them on their website. I have no experience with Apple products, I think they are the work of Satan. You are better off getting a cheap refurbished PC. That is what I did when I first bought my Hantek.

+Alejandro Amaro It can catch glitches and drop outs as long as you have the settings set correctly. For example using the Single Trigger will allow you to catch a rise or fall in voltage beyond certain parameters. Say you want to check to see if the battery voltage drops below 8 volts even for just 1 millisecond you an set the trigger to Single at 8 volts on a downward slope and it will show you exactly when it gets that low.

+Chris Canty I have not tried it but I think it will do very basic measurements. It is only one channel which can be a problem, you will be very limited. It is a tool that will be an addition to your diagnostic kit, not the main part. I have an old small Tektronix scope that I use to check simple circuits such as door lock solenoids or signals coming from simple switches. I use that since I do not want to pull out my main scope to check if the power door lock switch is sending a clean signal to the solenoid. The uScope looks like it will do jobs like that quite well. For more serious diagnostics you would need a scope with at least multiple channels. Hope this helps!!!

They are limited to 2 channels. Do you use more than 2 channels often? The model I am checking is DSO1102E. +Henrique Tavares From the specifiactions listed this should do way more than the Hantek I own. I am worried about the compatibility with some of the automotive Hantek accesories You might need to do a lot of conversions while you are measuring. As for the channels I do often use 3 or more channels. It is not too uncommon especially when I am looking at voltage waveforms as well as current waveforms. Hope this helps. I have never used the DSO1102E but I can look at the specifications and if you have any questions let me know.
