I was talking with a stylist about purchasing a new pair of shears when another stylist came up and said, I have Hatori Hanzos. Great I said, then continued demonstrating my product She interrupted me two more times trying to impress me by telling me how her shears were superior to any others.. She interrupted me one last time asking me how much I charged for sharpening. I said, a typical sharpening is $30 Hatori Hanzos are $80 Because of the '"superior steel" they're made from! She knew that I knew....... she had been taken!

Have gotten into the habit of checking with a machinist flat bar and then letting light pass thru between the bar and the shear edge. Flatten the blade against the bar and I can see set problems. Dropped shears can really cause set problems. While I can and do grind it is easy enough to see what and where the problems are located using this method. Shears with set that is to little will fold or push depending upon the problem. Long shears generally need a lot more arch in the set. Tips that lift are a nice way to see why tips may not cut. I make assumption that 80% of all shears I look at are cast and generally should not be hammered. One takes the chance of broken blades. So no hammering or bending just have to grind. I do start with super coarse grit to do the initial set work. Less work and can get the blade set normally in very few strokes. Just like putting the edge on. Work to finer and finer grit to get the set refined. As to Hanzo. OK thanks for the laughs

I sharpen alot of Hanzos. Typically they need some heavy ride line work at the base of the blade, just above the J. New, they have a 55-60 degree angle so if possible you should maintain the steep convex. Pushing hair is a tension and set issue if they are sharp. And they are tidiculously overpriced.

I find the brushed handled shears (not just Hanzo) sharpen more acute. Anyone else?

Not that I have noticed, but I will start noticing. It shouldn't have a correlation.

You don't go any finer than 2000 grit on the ride line?
@BonikaShears
@BonikaShears 2 жыл бұрын
On a very high end shear designed for slide-cutting, like the Fishbone, I will go to a higher grit. Often if the rideline grit is too high either you don't remove enough metal to make a sharp edge, or if you do it is too slippery and the hair tends to push.

@@BonikaShears I usually do my ride lines on 6000 grit and don't seem to have any problems with pushing. I will have to try 2000 grit and see what I think.

It may be my imagination, but during your final testing, with the mannequin facing you, the scissors pushed hair like crazy.

It pushed less than before. Also the silky hair I use is more likely to push.
