I take pride in getting razor edges on knives, axes, cleavers and chisels, but scissors are a whole different universe. Thanks for the educational demo! Especially interesting is the machine you use (and how you use it).

I don't even sharpen shears yet, mostly knives and tools, but one can learn so much about sharpening in general by watching Bonnie. I'd love to get trained by her on shears one day.

Hello Lots of sanding, does this machine have a built in dust extractor? Regards
@BonikaShears

There is very little dust. The shroud or guard catches most of it.

Please excuse my ignorance as I’m mostly a cutlery sharpener! But is this basically a drill with a disc sander attachment that’s spongy? The equipment you’re using that is? Apologies I’m attempting to broadening my sharpening skills as barbers shears I’ve never done only ever kitchen scissors

Funny you should say that. One time at our Sharpeners Jam, Jim Turner made such a device as a joke. It had a little stand and I think it won a prize in our contest for the funniest idea. But no one really tried to sharpen shears on it. I don’t think a 6” plate on a drill would be steady enough. We have a 1/8 hp Leeson motor with American made controller to get the correct torque.

@@BonikaShears thanks for the reply and yes I’m guessing there would be a fair amount building involved to get it anywhere close to you’re sharpening machine which I might add they look very professional and ease to use on the road for mobile sharpening so beg my pardon I was just thinking out loud and I’m ever in the states I would love to come to one your training sessions ☺️

Hopefully you learned NOT to use a waterstone alone to sharpen beauty shears. That was the point.

In the southern United States a standard breakfast item to eat with eggs, bacon and toast is a hominy white corn cereal topped with butter and sometimes cheese. It is often served with shrimp at dinner and southern restaurants will have shrimp and grits on the menu. Growing up at my school cafeteria every Friday we would have fish and grits. It is the consistency of thick oatmeal and looks like cream of wheat but it is a little gritty and tastes like corn. What country are you from? If you come here for training I'll take you to Waffle House that serves grits 6 ways.

What did shear sharpeners use prior to the invention of powered equipment? I imagine grindstones were used and the shears were simply held in hand without a jig of any kind
