The band take their music seriously, but other than that, they're a bunch of jokesters. Many of the stage hands have been with the band since day one. So you will see them come out dressed like the band members in their 70s garb, someone will come out and put coins into the washing machines (a different tour). I've even seen a person in a gorilla suit hop out on stage. It's just a fun time seeing these guys live, because you never know what you'll see.

The chicken bit was an insider reference to another of their tours. As a joke on how much equipment the guitarist Alex had on his side of the stage, Geddy would put large irrelevant equipment on his side. One tour this was a row of Rotisserie Chicken Machines and real chicken was cooked during the performance.

Rush has all kinds of music. Funk, Hard Rock, Jazz, Reggae, on and on. Today they are considered Progressive Rock, but back in the 70's they were just considered hard rock. Quite simply though, they are the best rock band to ever hit the stage. Three of the greatest rock musicians ever.

Over 40 years, Rush tried out a lot of different things. If you revisit them, whichever song you pick, it’s not going to go where you’re expecting it to go. I like this song because is such a showcase for Geddy on bass. When the Rush Army shows up, everyone will suggest their favorite song. I suggest “Xanadu” to go back to their late 1970’s proggy peak. Or “Limelight” for a juicy but accessible bit of Rush’s more-is-more philosophy. Or if you just want pure electricity, “YYZ” Live in Rio, is their most well known instrumental. But only come back if you find them intriguing. These guys are not for everyone.

Rush is a trio of some of the best musicians you will ever see. The fact that they can play note for note live what they often offer on record tells you everything. The joke in the background is (from what I have heard) is that guitarist Alex Lifeson has stacks of guitar amps on his side of the stage. Not wanting to be outdone but bowing to the reality that the bass is mixed through the main stage PA, bassist Geddy Lee opted to stack his side of the stage with deep fryers and washing machines and whatnot to balance things out. Stage hands and roadies will wander out to put clothes in or drop some more chickens in the fryer randomly throughout the show.

Well, having seen as many interviews with Rush members as I have a this point and having read books by them, and seeing how quirky they are/were, they would 100% take your comment about this playing in the background of a video game as a compliment.

The thing that I always loved about Rush was their diversity. In 1981, they achieved commercial success with their album MOVING PICTURES, and instead of following up with another album that was essentially MOVING PICTURES II, they went a different direction. They'll surprise you.

You picked up on one of the geniuses of this 3 piece band. 40 year career with 19 studio albums, 17 consecutive platnum or multiplatnum albums by the guys who just loved to make great music. They are their own genre that weaves in and out of almost every style of music, all under the umbrella of Rock music. In their songs you'll find rock, progressive rock, early metal, progressive metal, pop, rap, reggae, waltz, samba, classical, jazz etc... They even take one of their early songs "Working Man" from their first album in 1970's (straight hard rock) and in mid 2010's rearrange the beginning of the song as a polka which with the flip of a switch on a single note transition moves to one of the most incredible hard rock songs where they tear it up. Best band ever.

On the album prior to this there is an instrumental track called "Where's My Thing". I don't know of any killer live versions of it, but the studio version is still pretty fun to listen to, imho. They have six instrumentals total, if you care to check out any more of them: La Villa Strangiato (my favorite of their instrumentals), YYZ (a close second favorite), Where's My Thing, Leave That Thing Alone, The Main Monkey Business, and Malignant Narcissism.

Rush songs have a unique sound, but they vary a LOT. They can be hard rockers (Headlong Flight, Tom Sawyer), unique-sounding instrumentals (Leave that Thing Alone, Where's My Thing, La Villa Strangiata, LImbo), long progressive pieces (2112, Hemispheres), sonnets (Madrigal, Tears), and everything in between.

@Musical_Skye3 жыл бұрын
If I recall correctly, the album "Roll the Bones" contains the instrumental "Where's My Thing?", named so because guitarist Alex Lifeson kept losing stuff in the studio, constantly iterating 'where's my....you know, where's my +thing+?'. "Leave That Thing Alone" is the follow-up instrumental that appeared on the subsequent album, 'Counterparts' (musically, they're not necessarily related, tho I could be wrong), while expanding on the inside joke of whatever Thing they were referring to with 'Where's My Thing'. If you want to continue exploring Rush instrumentals, I would go next to perhaps "Malignant Narcissism" or "Main Monkey Business" and then to YYZ and THEN to La Villa Strangiato. But listen to the studio versions, first. While the band prided themselves on reproducing the songs authentically on stage, there might be some subtle interplay, musicianship or even a minor detail in the studio versions that sometimes are simply harder to hear or slightly changed up on the live versions. Enjoy!

Ready to go down a 40 year deep rabbit hole are ya, mate? Buckle up! We Canadians couldn’t be prouder of our boys so if you take them on do it right. Try and touch on each era. The 70’s are raw as the learned their craft and each other. The 80’s were smoother, funkier and full of synths as Geddy explored playing keyboards but doing it while playing bass and singing. The 90’s were a return to hard rocking and stripped down. Near the end of the decade Neil lost his daughter and wife in 18 months. It took five years for them to come back but this last part of their career was a pure gift. They put out albums that built on all the previous versions of Rush and it was a golden period for Rush fans, IMHO. They always were looking to create a better Rush. For the best in hard rockin’, kick ass playing check out Working Man - Live from either the Time Machine tour or the R40 show. Both are insane but I like the R40 version better because I was at that show. It was the last time I saw them live and I’ve been at every tour since 1976. You would do well to research a bit before reacting to Rush as their fans will know if you’ve got a detail wrong. By the way the drummer is Neil Peart and it’s said with a long “e” in the middle and not a soft “e”. It matters to us fans. Enjoy the ride!!

I admit that when I first heard them, back in the mid '70s, I felt the same way about his voice, but over the years I'd hear a song or two (they weren't played much on the limited choice of radio stations I have), and I had to admit to myself that I liked the song, but not enough to take a dive into buying the album. Now, being just a few years younger than them, I wish so much that a college friend had loaned me 2112, or Hemispheres, so that I could listen to the music and read along with the lyrics. They were the masters of prog rock during the '70s.

Ha! That is funny that the first RUSH song that you chose to listen to is an instrumental. They do that. They have like a handful of those from throughout their long and distinguished career. Another great instrumental of theirs, if you're ever in the mood for such a thing again, is "La Villa Strangiato" or "XYZ". I see there's already a lot of other RUSH fans that filled you in below, and I don't want to be overly repetitive, but RUSH was always sort of an odd group on the fringe of the mainstream, but us fans are very dedicated and loyal to them. They've always been marked by their musicianship. They started out in Canada as just teenagers in garage bands that originally modeled themselves after Led Zeppelin, and spent decades growing and evolving their sound, and depending on the time period, their stuff from one point to the other can be kind of diverse. It's a very touchy subject, but Neil Peart is arguably the greatest drummer to ever live! Geddy Lee was considered the best bassist in rock for over a decade, and I think Alex Lifeson's guitar playing is highly underrated and lost in a larger crowd of his peers. I think I don't want to spoil it for you, but I also like the anticipation of waiting for you to hear Geddy sing.
