Jon Mess is actually a lyrical genius. Don't focus on the words, focus on the way it sounds. Think of it in a similar way to gutterals that you can't really understand, it's more of an instrument that's written to fit the music.

Jon does intentionally write stupid lyrics. However, when he writes serious ones, they hit hard. My favorite is in Ember when he says: "I could've swore that I fixed myself 'cause I read a bunch a shit about mental health. But then I took another drink and said I felt like I don't need to think about nothing or the things that I do."

Not sure if I would've described DGD as metalcore. Always thought of them more like post-hardcore/prog rock, but that stuff doesn't matter anyway. This is my favorite band, so glad to see you give em a listen!
@Nathan-dn4zl
@Nathan-dn4zl Жыл бұрын
They are, technically speaking, not metalcore. I try not to get wrapped in the whole "well ackshually, this is " too much, because I feel you can get kinda lost in the sauce and not fully appreciate the music for what it is regardless of genre
@lmaopog6481
@lmaopog6481 Жыл бұрын
@@Nathan-dn4zl oh yeah, for sure I feel much the same. Putting labels on genres often really impacts the experience you'll have with the material. I try not to think about that stuff a lot, but there is a general culture and mindset behind certain styles of music still that is sometimes just not very useful to ignore.
@ShatroGames

DGD is part of the "swancore" genre, named after Will Swan of the band. There are a couple bands like Hail The Sun, Royal Coda (past DGD vocalist Kurt Travis' band), Eidola (current DGD guitarist Andrew Wells' band), Sianvar (Hail The Sun vocalist and Will Swan), Secret Band (DGD screamer Jon Mess' band) and Dwellings, who are not affiliated with them, just to name a few. (not so) fun fact: this is the bassist Tim Feerick's last album before he passed away due to a fentanyl overdose. Oh yes, their lyrics are mostly complete bullshit, intentionally. I think they're just having fun, not trying to prove a point or something. There's some "lore" and callbacks for fans that makes this even more fun.

So jon mess, the screamer, writes his lyrics based on “the way the screams sound” he knows most people dont know the screams and that they just add to the feel so he chose to take that to another level and has always said mostly nonsense, but if you never had lyrics to see, you may have never caught on how ridiculous they are lol there is also fan lore he buries throughout a lot of his screaming lyrics to add some fun. Once in a while he screams regular shit. Its rare tho lol

Also just a note, Jon Mess's lyrics never makes sense (or almost) because the way the write em is just how words ''fit together'' as far as sounds goes, he writes vibes.

The juxtaposition of this band is so good with the raw vocals of Jon Mess and the flighty and beautiful vocals of Tilian, together is just brilliant. But it extends past that too, Jon Mess lyrics being mostly nonsense with some meaning hidden in there sometimes, versus Tilians parts spending beautiful and like section of a normal song. Smashing that shit together for these guys just somehow works so fucking well.

I’m 51 years old and have been a fan of DGD for about 10 years now, so I’m still partial to Jonny Craig. But as a huge fan of Tides of Man, I was glad to see Tilian get the job. There was a period of time when everyone thought he was going to join Saosin, which would have been epic, and when Tides got wind of it, kicked him out (dumb move guys) which freed him up for DGD. They have a huge catalog, check out some of the earlier stuff, it’s got more soul.

DGD are fantastic. I actually think they've sounded quite different over the years but that could be owed to their many lineup changes. Their lead guitarist and drummer are the only two members who have been in the band the whole way through. As for albums to check out after, I think you should check out the other two vocalists! Jonny Craig was on two albums, Downtown Battle Mountain 1 and 2, and Kurt Travis was on their self-titled(also referred to as death star) and Happiness. Definitely check out DBM2 and Happiness. Those are all time fan favorites Also, yeah, Jon's lyrics are intentionally terrible/weird. He sprinkles some lucid prose in from time to time and it does hit, but he's gone on record saying that he focuses on the feel/sound of the words, not so much the meaning. Wasn't too hard to adjust to when I started listening. He's a funny guy and I always love music that doesn't take itself too seriously. ALSO also, thank you for paying attention to the bass. Almost nobody on KZbin (that I've seen react to their stuff) pays it any mind. Tim's work kicks ass alsoalsoalso, yeah the album does suffer from having 17 songs. If you're not already a fan, it is a little daunting and honestly a little exhausting. But few bands can crank out 15+ songs on one album and keep it fresh. For what it is, it's better than it could have been

John Mess, the screamer, said in one of his very few interviews that he screams to the song before writing lyrics to nail down the sound he wants then puts words to it that sounds good screamed. There are some songs he has meaningful lyrics but mostly he just makes noise

Jon's lyrics are intentionally stupid as that is just how he is 😂. I like this album but felt way too long. By the way you HAVE to check out the new aviations song is soo fucking good. Definitely up your alley
