Very nice explanation and I like how you make emphasis on pronunciation. I’m learning Finnish “just because” I love Finnish rock (Alase is my favourite one, I highly recommend them) and I just thought “It’d be nice to understand what the hell they are saying” 😂 So, here I am. My friend’s birthday is due and I wanted to surprise her by singing “Happy Birthday” in different languages (Spanish, mother tongue, English, second mother tongue, Russian and Finnish) so thanks a lot! I’ll be following you. Kiitos!!!

I'm willing to bet "paljon onnea vaan" might be best translated as wishing someone "(nothing) but much happiness" on their birthday, or "only much happiness."

In Polish there is a different song on a completely random melody that wishes a person to live until 100😂 which with latest biohacking developments might soon be a bit outdated 😅
@henriklantzhedstrom6709 Жыл бұрын
Maybe it’s the same as the Swedish one?
@marcinborkowicz2557Күн бұрын
I wouldn't say the melody of "Sto lat!" song (pl. "Live a hundred years!") is random. It's the Polish song, quite old actually with a different melody than the English "Happy birthday". For the year people even have added new phrases to "Sto lat". This makes the song funny, sometimes hillarius or even a bit naughty, but all in a funny, cheerful way.

Dear Katya,. If I was about to write review about your video, I would say something like Katya spends the first third of the video teaching us how to pronounciate Hyvää Syntymäpäivää right, then in the 2nd part she chnges her mind and demonstates to us that there is no need to learn what we have just learnt. In the third part she teaches us the birthday song and - you have already guessed - it does not include "Hyvää Syntymäpäivää" either. Anyway, your video always makes a huge success when I paste it on my Faebook friends' timeline on their birthdays. Should you ever come of the idea of shooting a new version of this video, please include some funny punh-line in the end on that you have made people make the "Hyvää Syntymäpäivää" effort, appearently without any reason. All the best and Gratulerer så mye med dagen. Jan

Hello Kat! Thanks for your videos! They are really useful. I know Finnish people is not keen on showing affection or saying love words. Actually i remember that in one of your videos you explained that "minä rakastan sinua" is not said lightly, but I'd like to know if there are ways to call your boyfriend like " love, sweety or honey" you know? Kiitos paljon! Hyvää päivää! 😘

My papa and me celebrate our birthdays together since its a day apart. He is the last remaining person in his family and he's saying he doesn't know anyone that speaks finnish anymore because they mostly pasted away or lost contact and it's something he really misses. I can speak some but I understand it better then spoken. I knew happy birthday but I dont think ive ever heard the finnish song, in Canada we just use use happy birthday and tease the person how many boyfriends/girlfriends they have if there's remaining lit candles. I'm trying to get fully fluent so I can speak with my papa before it's too late. He's 82 and early Alzheimers.

I know in Greek they have a different song for happy birthday, that's really cool. In portuguese from Portugal we have a really long song but with the normal rhythm. People just keep on adding more to the song, and it's funny to see, because now it's like a small play, where the guest sing it and than the birthday person reply and again the guests sing another part ahah
