Matt and Trey just signed a 900 million deal with Paramount to make 14 movies, and they very much are still making projects with this sense of humor. Matt and Trey have always been immune to the PC police of the times, so I think in this case the movie could be made today, strictly because of Matt and Trey.
@brandocalrissian3294

It would definitely still be made today because Matt and Trey are untouchable when it comes to the woke mob. They still do stuff like this and go harder in the paint than this all the time these days. I bet the last thing they do for South park will literally kill some woke people because they'll get so offended.

What’s crazy is, a puppet movie “farce”, does all the basics of storytelling mechanics better than anything from current Lucasfilm and Marvel, which shouldn’t be something to brag about, but nowadays it’s kinda rare. Everything in Team America makes sense, cause and effect, non-contradiction, the audience has all the information they need, the characters know what they should know and the audience knows why, the characterizations stay consistent, the motivations are clear, Gary has an actual arc, they payoff of all of the setups, in a really rewarding way. It sounds basic, but Kenobi can’t get close to doing it. I’m confident, that not only do Matt Stone & Trey Parker have a better understanding of Star Wars as a concept, but that they could write and make a better Star Wars movie or show than Lucasfilm can at this point. Definitely better than Rian Johnson or JJ Abrams. Bill Hader actually credited working as a writer on South Park a couple seasons, was where he really learned “story structure” and how to write multiple episode storylines and have everything make sense and “work”.
@rickymcn1

Trey and Matt do actually take story telling seriously in everything they do. It was from them that I first heard the "then", "therefore" and "but" mantra of storytelling. Smart guys, appearances to the contrary.

@@Faceless_XIV Accurate. The removal of Garrison and the neutering of Cartman in that season destroyed much of the dynamic, following that no Garrison, no Randy in town and Cartman no longer doing Cartman things has been a downward slope, with occasional flashes of brilliance. Though people constantly refer to the member berries, most seem to have forgotten that entire season-spanning storyline ended up with Cartman on a Pewdie-Pie Christmas special, then completely disappeared... People (especially acting talent) simply just won't risk their entire career to push back against powerful politically active actors or movements, not even mildly. This is a direct contrast to liberals back in the day pushing against Ultra-Conservatives by being as anti-religious, overtly sexual and deliberately shocking as possible. In short, the liberals in cinema in 2022 are a pale imitation of the liberal cinema of the 70s, 80s and 90s. :/

Been meaning to watch this again for a while because my gf hadn't seen it before, when I saw this video pop up I knew it was time. Our faces hurt from laughing afterwards, several times my eyes were watering from laughing so hard. I miss movies like these, just an hour and a half of FUN. Member fun? I member. Never even reached for my phone once. The D, P and A speech is still one of the best speeches of all time, and completely relatable to real life scenarios.

I love this movie. It is so unique, nothing will ever come close to it. If there will be anyone making a puppet movie some day, they will always get compared to Team America. A true classic.

I fuckin adore this movie. No fucks were given - because one could. And true to form S&P kicks in every direction. Most of the actors they lampooned loved it too - because, you know, satire was actually a respected thing back then. Matt Damon still signs pictures of his character to this day. I do have to say, though, that making fun of the Alec Baldwin shooting is somewhat tasteless. I’m an industry professional myself, and I cannot fathom the horror and grief for everyone involved - especially Baldwin. You can have your opinions of him and his reputation, but this is just horrible. Makes joking about it just not so funny. Which brings me on to another point: Team America is incredibly over the top and vulgar, but does it to make incredibly sharp and funny commentary. The jokes land because they are intelligent. What the new environment of everybody taking offence to everything has fostered is a tame dichotomy. On the one hand you get the bland material, desperate not to harm anyone’s feelings, while on the other you sometimes get a counter reaction. You see some commedians just going out of their way to be as vulgar and offensive as possible, just to provoke. Being vulgar isn’t funny in itself; your joke still needs wit. Matt and Tray’s still got that. I remember seeing The Book of Mormon on Broadway back in 2013, and I was blown away by the very fact that a show like that was greenlit in America. If you haven’t seen it you have NO IDEA how fuckin far they take it. I couldn’t breathe for laughing. It’s the best thing since Life of Brian. Social/religious commentary told through magical fuck frogs and Aids ridden warlords in a parody of an African country, all done with heart and riveting tunes. It’s still a hit both in NY and London, but would have never got off the ground today. Would be deemed too goddamned offensive. Thank fuck for Stone and Parker. Go see it if you get the chance. Here endeth the rant.

George Clooney is the reason why Stone and Parker took off. He loved a little Christmas video that they did, which many consider to be the first South Park episode. Clooney took it, showed it around Hollystrange, and now the World is graced with high art.
