I loved how the dynamic between Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s characters change between the films. In Shaun of the Dead, Frost is a slacker who holds back Pegg from living a better life. In Hot Fuzz, Frost in an inexperienced cop who tries to learn from Pegg how to be a better officer while also teaching him how to unwind and be a better man. Then in this film Frost is the serious career man who is sick of his manipulative friend and tries to tell him to grow up and take responsibility for his life. A great contrast in each film.

I'm a huge Edgar Wright fan, but have to admit on first viewing the bleak Coda to The Worlds End kinda threw me. On subsequent viewings I totally got it. The scene where Simon Pegg was pouring his heart out to Nick Frost about his life regrets actually had me in tears. I was going through a divorce at the time and man did that really hit me in the gut. Absolutely love the Cornetto trilogy and eagerly await Last Night in Soho.

First time I saw The World’s End, I was a little confused myself, but after watching it a second time, I started to understand this movie on many different levels. I’ve rewatched this movie around 9 times and I have to say, it’s probably one of my favorite movies of all time, I personally like it more than the previous two, though they are still incredible. And yes, of course, the dynamic between Simon Pegg and Nick Frost is so strong, especially in the end where for the first time they are actually fighting. This movie is severely underrated

Same. Don't mean to get maudlin on you, but I really think it hits the heart of a lost generation that thought success meant material gain or external recognition when, in fact, meaning and purpose are the most necessary pursuits. It also hits on the tendency we all have to romanticize the past as we gradually forget that being a teenager/20-something sucked balls.

@@braxtonagee412So true, even now I still have moments of remembering the past and I have to force myself to NOT cover up the negative stuff and pretend it was all daisy's and sunshine. The other issue was that it was not just material things, it was our parents generation and the grandparents who could not understand how much the world has changed and thus had higher expectations of us. A good example, I was on welfare when younger and still living at home, my dads thought I was on easy street. Then Covid came and even before that my dad was wearing his body out, then HE ended up on the welfare system in Australia....... he never said it to me, but my mother mentioned that he had complained about the system and how punishing it can be, until she reminded him that this system is the same one I had been in. I think the pessimism expressed by the aliens in the finale is what kills this movie for me. Because that stubborn resistance to change, the ability to stand up and fight against our fate, to struggle against the inevitable is what makes us great, but rather than learn that the aliens are just "screw it" and emp the whole planet. Standard response to Hobbit-based Eagle complaints - “how dare these birds refuse to fly the protagonists into Dragon country… there couldn’t possibly be any form of Apex Predator living there that might in some way pose a threat to large birds.” You’re damn right giant eagles ain’t going anywhere close to the Lonely Mountain until they’re damn sure the dragon is dead.
@KoaWaylander3 жыл бұрын
Pretty much. The LOTR Eagle complaints are another similar annoying thing. Up until the ring is destroyed there are at least 4 Nazgul all of which have access to flying mounts guarding Mordor's borders. The only time they are not there is when they are chasing after Frodo/the ring directly (meaning that they wouldn't be following Frodo if the ring was elsewhere). I think the Nazgul get underestimated pretty heavily because we see them 'defeated' by Aragorn and by Eowyn. The only reason either of them have a chance is their bloodlines and fate, anyone else would be destroyed by the 9. Ain't no way you are getting the eagles to fly in there with multiple Nazgul hanging around.

I'm pretty early in the video, so don't know if this'll be brought up, but I think I've got some reasoning as to why this is not as good as the other two in the trilogy. First I want to say that I've only seen world's end once and quite a while ago, so I'll concede that I may be off a bit. But, I've got 3 main reasons. First, I think, as you've pointed out, it's not quite as tight a script as hot fuzz or Shaun of the dead. Second, the relationship of Simon Pegg's character and Nick Frost is quite different, and in the other two the chummy relationship between them is almost contagious, in the world's end, sure it makes sense and they act well, but their relationships in the other two movies seemed like a contagious laugh, you don't know exactly why, but the laughter just spreads to you when you hear it. Third reason is the ending. I somewhat forget bits of the ending, but I remember that Simon Pegg's character ends up kinda befriending essentially clones of his friends and it ends with them rolling up to a bar or something... In Shaun of the dead the major character arc for Shaun is taking control of his life and not just watching it pass by, his best friend is a bad influence and kinda holds him back even though Shaun loves the guy. In the end, Shaun takes the reigns and becomes leader of their group, he saves his Gf, it looks like he's a more motivated guy, but still has his best friend as a zombie he likes to visit now and again. In Hot Fuzz, his character is a workaholic who doesn't know how to make real relationships. His arc is knowing how and when to shut it off and be buds with someone. In the world's end, from what I recall, Simon Pegg's character doesn't want to grow up and wants his best friends to essentially stay in Nederland with him forever. In the end he's got clones of his best friends to do exactly that, so maybe he becomes a better friend throughout the movie or whatever, but the overall arc is that he continues to live in a fantasy and doesn't have to change because his friends are now cloned versions of his ideal thoughts of them. Essentially in the first two movies, Simon Pegg' character works his ass off on his character not to get what he wants, but to be who it is good for him to be. In world's end, he fucks around a bit, might have some sort of resolution with some friends, but ultimately becomes the person he wanted to be from the start.

I think the reason Andy downed the shots was because finding out there is an alien invasion was just the last straw of what was his downward spiraling life. In fact it was something of a revelation when I first watched it convinced as I was that the third Cornetto film would be a load of complacent old toss written, acted and directed by talents well and truly burnt out by that point. But against all expectations the opposite proved to be true. Brimming with rapier wit, well crafted, compelling characters, ingenious sight gags and hidden subtext aplenty, WE is one of cinema’s very few ‘final film of the trilogy’ that doesn’t feel like merely a contractual obligation. Just checking out IMDB’s trivia page showed me just how many references, concepts and wry nods I _still_ miss, despite numerous repeat viewings! Effing superb.

I watched this without seeing the trailer. Or at least, I didn't remember. It was a ride.

I remember showing these films to a friend back in 2015 or so. She actually liked Shaun of the Dead the least, she didn't see the George A. Romero films so she couldn't fully appreciate the homages to those old zombie films, and she actually found Ed to be a bit unlikabe. On the other hand she had a blast with Hot Fuzz and Wold's End, finding Gary to be a better realized asshole character than Ed.

Shaun of the Dead doesn't hit the same as it did during the zombie craze. For those of us who lived through the zombie craze without seeing Shaun of the Dead, it comes off as a little too predictable and "sellout-y". It's still an amazing movie, but I think it's aged the worst out of the Cornetto Trilogy.

Im wirh your friend. Shaun of the dead is good, but im not a big fan of over the top gore so that bumps it down a notch.

Coincidentally, I saw this last night. It's not a keeper, but it is amusing. Of course, the situation at the end of the movie would have cause the starvation deaths of billions of people.

I highly recommend 3 horror movies Waxworks (1988) , Return of the Living Dead, and Frankenstein Unbound. "Return" especially I've watched more times than any other movie in existence. Has some incredibly smart writing, a lovable cast of characters u want to see make it to the end, and where the mistakes don't take you out of the moment, plus tons and tons of great trivia. I highly reccomend them if u need ideas for halloween.

Don't forget the "Tar Man" in Return - one of the most recognizable zombies from any zombie film (together with Bub from Day Of The Dead).

Have you ever watched “Withnail and I” drinker? One of the greatest British films of all time, and it’s about a DRINKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is a movie that I should have watched when I was younger. I saw it on the local video store's shelf every time I went in, and never rented it. Then I watched a few years ago and was like "where has this movie been all my life?"

The movie where the na'er-do-well gets exactly what he wants, he becomes an adventurer leading a band of merrymen in a post-apocalyptic hellscape. Everyone else gets fuck all - and the world suffered the deaths of billions and returned to medieval population levels - and the fat character goes - "Life is better and simpler than before the apocalypse - I mean, if my glasses are ever stolen or destroyed, I'll be fucked - but life is better - I love me some copium." What a great movie.

It may sound strange but the whole 12 pints being an epic challenge was a really difficult plot to take. I know it sounds crazy but that just wasn't an unreachable target when I was younger(when I first watched the film).

I agree from a practical perspective. I think it's supposed to represent a rite of passage. 'becoming an adult.'

I think that Gary King either just left or broke out of rehab. I mean yall said he was at AA at the beginning, but all do respect, thats silly. Why would Gary Freaking King be in AA? It makes way more sense that he was in some sort of court ordered rehab, like he says, they tried to tell him when to sleep which is what they do in rehab, dont know if yall have ever been. And when they get pulled over in the beginning he searches himself frantically and then goes "oh yea I did it all in the service" or something like that, then sniffs and smiles at Nick Frost, so Im pretty sure thats implying that he did coke in the bathroom when they stop, which Martin Freeman actually suggests is what hes doing.

Hot Fuzz was made for only 8,000,000 & the collective cast has nearly 1000 acting awards between them including numerous BAFTA's and Oscars. Call Edgar, Simon & Nick and start crowdfunding. Do it.

Good discusion. I think why it didn't get more love. Was cause there was American movie called world's end or At the end of the world. round the same time. Which may have confused Movie goers. But I'm sure the darker theme's which hot Fuzz and Shaun of the dead had. also put people off.
