I'm pretty sure I remember hearing that the makers of this movie were huge 40k fans, and when asked about it, they admitted they were "inspired" by it. Of course, legally they couldn't come out and say it, but this was basically meant to be a precursor to 40k, showing mankind's first contact with the Warp. P.S. The gothic "cathedral" design of the ship was lifted almost wholesale from 40k as well.
@Requiem4u
@Requiem4u 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the writers have said they got inspiration from 40k so some Warhammer fans decided Event Horizon is an unofficial 40k prequel. But they've also said they took inspiration from Hellraiser. Are 40k and Hellraiser a shared cannon now? Of course not. It's a nice idea, but most likely not based on reality.

The conversation at 45:00 about how the two sections would just need a single spur to be destroyed or a clamp to be released to free the forward decks as a lifeboat. The reason you have so many explosive charges starting from the rear is that the force multiplies in order to provide inertia to the forward decks to move them far enough away from the gravity drive in the rear as it opens up the tear in space and gets drawn in. Also be good for you both to look at 'Life' together.

My favourite fan theory about this film is that Weir knew what would happen and where it would go, because he was already (to use the 40k connection) a Chaos cultist - hence the ease with which he is corrupted and the overall design of the ship itself. Saw Event Horizon at the theater... one of the few movies I've seen that I had no idea at all what it was when I sat down. That zoom in and spin to the space station on the big screen was a trip. A space station, so it's sci-fi then? Then the wife pops up and I'm like... huh. Then they get to the Event Horizon and all hell breaks loose -- literally. Holy heck what a ride that was!

Same with the Matrix. It was supposed to be a neural network that they used the humans for, not energy. But the execs thought it was too far out for normies to understand. What’s sad is that it would have been more fascinating and appropriate that the Matrix was created by the minds of the people to keep them trapped. It actually makes MORE sense but the execs are just that stupid.

Due to constantly working around this time in the '90s, and out socially progressing my cirrhosis in what little sleepless free time I had, I didn't see Event Horizon until it came on cable late one night. Even better, I saw it practically at the same time as 'In The Mouth Of Madness' and 'Lord Of Illusions' within a very short period of time. Great horror movies I should've watched in the theaters, but repeatedly enjoyed afterward. I tend to link those three together in some self-created mid '90s horror trend which was short lived but I greatly enjoyed.

When you guys were talking about those rare moments in horror movies where a character actually leave before anything bad happens, that reminded me of this one movie called the Mausoleum(I think) that I saw, which was made in like, the late 70s or early 80s I think about this woman who was possessed all the way back in childhood after her mom died at an early age and she’d kinda just sleep with guys behind her husbands back and kill them in gruesome ways. But there was one old black maid with an attitude who was supposed to look after her in that movie who immediately saw some unnatural spooky shit in the hallway leading over to her room, some fog rolling along the floor, so she goes back down stairs and says “great googly moogly! I haven’t drank in a long time but I’m gonna need somethin to drink before I handle this!” And she just takes a swig of wine or something. Then when she walks back up to the ladies room, she just pokes her head in to see her in her bed possessed and she’s like “AW HELL NAW!” And leaves lmfao. She was the smartest character in the whole god damn movie, she was easily my favorite character in the movie and she was only on screen for less than 5 minutes!

48:27. I doubt that you would need to set EVERY single charge - you would just need to arm a couple of self destruct charges and start a chain reaction. Remember, the Event Horizon was a pretty big ship, and you would need a big enough explosion to sever the front and aft parts of the ship, preferably at a weak point on the ship structure or a stress point on the ship's design where the front and aft parts come together and where it would be the easiest to separate the two parts.

To this day this is still one of the few genuine scary films made - and great sci fi - very close to Alien. I had the joy of seeing this in a very early THX cinema, and the use of sound was like nothing I had ever experienced before. The scene where Sam Neill is walking around and the shutter opened - never seen so many people in a cinema shit themselves - it was awesome. If you haven't experienced this film in surround sound you need to make it happens - it makes everything twice as good, twice as scary - and there are so many sounds that happen behind it it is really unnerving - extremely cleverly done.

i didn't work on Event Horizon - i was midway through my degree. But i did get to work on 2007 Sunshine movie - i animated all the motion graphics around the various sets like the cockpit, the O2 room, sun room etc etc - good fun and some fun stories on that film like Chris Evans getting so buff midway through training they had to stick him on a crash diet because the shot continuity didn't match lol. And they used the good-laff chef as a stunt double after shaving his hair lol *edit* - lol just realised you mentioned Sunshine 10 mins later hehe and yes Alien Isolation is a f**king perfect game!!! The Working Joe's are so good and the whole game just oozes atmosphere and tension. I'm midway through it for the 2nd time.

Sunshine is such a brilliant and imo horrifically underrated film. The animation you worked on was amazing. Well done, mate.

11:00 regarding the cgi looking bad… turn the resolution on you tele down. Most movies actually look worse on the highest res because they weren’t meant to be viewed that way. They were meant for projectors and even the newest theatres don’t have ultra hd

The design of the Event Horizon ship, built around a long corridor, reminded me of the Cygnus from Disney's The Black Hole.

I remember in 97, that movie scared the shit out of me as a kid. I was the one who chose it at the movie rental place lol. I didn't even finish it back then. Took some years for me to get to watch it again with older eyes.

Critical Drinker, I am fan of several podcasts. Ranging in a wide variety of topics. But I must say, finding your videos was a pleasant surprise. Your videos are very down to earth. In today's world of so much media it's nice to find a surprise, interesting discussion.

On the subject of the corridor, perhaps there was supposed to be a tram of some kind? But it wasn't working, etc.

Corridor was only 30 feet long so they employed giant mirrors to expand the corridor and set.

“OooOOOOooaaaAAAAAAHHHH” - Sam Neil, 1997 Easily one of my favorite sci-fi movies period, right up there with Alien. Different tones and reasons to love it, but they both stuck right away

I'm not generally a fan of reboots or remakes, but I'd love to see the original director's vision for this movie. Even if they did an animated version. It sounds so good. Such a shame it was lost.
