Eno-san was actually one of my father's friend. My father owned a camera shop back in the 90's and Eno-san was fond of antique camera for his private collection. I was too young to remember Eno-san but I do remember he gave me 10,000 yen for otoshidama when I was 5 lol

I agree. I wish his first company, EIM lasted longer and wanted to actually make games based off of Licensed franchises, and I wish he wasn't such a HARD-ASSED SON OF A BITCH, who HATED licensed games and franchises, just like every single other Japanese person and game creator is.

This video I think best shows Derek's best reviewing skill: the ability to make an experience of playing sound positive in spite of flaws. He's gives an incredibly fair review that acknowledges the problems with the game, but because of the way he talks and the words he uses, you KNOW that there's something worth while to playing this game. I really need to take notes on this video, because I think this is his best review, with his other two Halloween reviews from that year being shortly behind. You really make me want to continue Cutting Through the Hype, which is hilarious, because that's basically the exact opposite of this show. Still, this show is always a great way to show people that you need to look at game and be more happy.

As derivative as the story is, essentially being ALIEN 1 almost verbatim, I still think it's the best part. I've never played an FMV game to the end until this one, and I think the story and puzzle segments were the main reason. The MYST/D sections are fantastic, but while I really loved the real-time hallway gameplay, it definitely took it's toll in disc 3 where the game essentially becomes first person Pac Man Also I do have to make a correction since this is one of the few reviews of this game on youtube- the first puzzle DOES have an answer given to you, after you encounter it, go to a network terminal and call Kimberly one or two times. Once she realizes she's only able to send video and not audio, she'll pick up a pen and pad and draw you a diagram of the buttons to push for the puzzle.

*Every* old RPG could have used a "refresher" reminding you where you're at and what's happened so far - the way this game does. A game that's story driven and designed to be played in segments? You'd think a "last time on dbz" would have been a naturally occurring concept during production. Oh well. I guess I'll just have to start a new ff3 file.

I rushed right to this page after I had heard the bad news because I immediately thought of you, Derek Alexander, and your work documenting the work of Kenji Eno. I really wish that the invisible and extremely deadly monsters thing was used in more games. I can think of exactly one other game that used this well, the free horror game Mouth Sweet. For an RPG maker game, it doesn't PLAY like an RPG maker game. What other RPG maker game has you trudge through corridors, being pursued by things you can't see, armed only with a revolver with limited ammo and forced to use audio to locate these things that want you dead?

@davistoa Numbers can be displayed differently. Our decimal mathematical system knows numbers from 0 to 9. Thats 10 different states. The binary mathematical system knows only 2 states 0 and 1. Thats what makes it so great to solve such puzzels. Those buttons know only too states too, pressed (1) and not pressed (0). See wikipedia "binary mathematical system" for details.

Hi Derek. I really enjoy your videos. But I have to correct you on two things concerning this one. Laura's father does speak in all the Japanese ports of "D". His voice is not shown in text only. Of course he speaks in Japanese. As for the music in the first "D" game, it's true that he wrote all of it. But he only performed the piano cues that you hear a few times throughout the game. The symphonic score was performed by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. I'm sure you know that. But what you might not know is that Kenji Eno actually hired the orchestra to perform the music that he wrote for the game. But that's not all, he actually took over as the conductor of the orchestra too. And not only that, he did not use a baton. He conducted the orchestra with just his hands. He also performs the instrumental song "Torchlight" which you hear during the end credits of the good ending. He's not performing the entire song, only the guitar parts. Speaking of the guitar, can you please tell me the name of the song & the artist that does that great guitar rift that plays during the opening where it says "lophatjello Productions Presents" ?
@whatamalike14 жыл бұрын
I do like his rebelious nature, but Playstation to Saturn in 1997 probably wasn't the smartest move from a financial point of view. But I guess he wasnt bothered about that as long as he can just about pay the bills...

Sometimes legendary artists can burn out so fast because they've managed to take 50 years of impressions and condensed them into 10 years or 20. I am pretty sure that he is somewhere, where he will either have new work developing in the afterlife or there will be some kind of presence. It is sad, and it is uncommon for people in the video game industry to die so young, but I am pretty sure that his final fate isn't at all. There is a game on the Wiiware program called You and Me and the Cubes.

What song is that guitar music from at the beginning of the video? I played "Enemy Zero" on normal mode the very first time I played the game. It actually did scare me. I don't think I have ever felt so uncomfortable while playing a video game before or since. It is a frustrating game to play since you can only save so many times in normal mode. And the fact that you can't turn off your console or you will have to play the game all over from the beginning. This made the game extremely challenging. I feel so lucky that the game did not freeze on me during game play. Probably the most challenging part of the game for me was towards the end when you had to navigate through several parts of the ship. I kept loosing my barrings & died quite a few times until I finally found the gun with unlimited ammo. To be honest, I think this game is way scarier than the more modern "Alien" games that are out there. I haven't played "Alien: Isolation" yet. Based on the reviews, it's supposed to be the scariest of all the games in the "Alien" franchise. As you pointed out in the review, "Enemy Zero" is clearly based on the "Alien" movie even if it is not regarded as part of the franchise. Had Kenji Eno not died, I'm sure he would have brought Laura out of retirement for a third go around with "D3". With all the advancements in technology from the time of "D2" to now, I'm sure he was just waiting for the right moment to start working on the next game to feature Laura & her magic compact. Hopefully all his games will get the HD treatment at some point & get released in a collection for the PS4 & XBOX ONE. I've played all of them including the Saturn & Dreamcast versions of "Real Sound". I don't know if you ever played that game. Basically, you play the part of a girl who along with her high school friends ( or maybe college ) have to decide what to do when school is cancelled because of a typhoon that is about to come on shore. You have the choice of going out & partying with your friends, or going home to protect your family during the crisis. Basically you need to play it twice to see ( or should I say hear ) the outcome of your decision. Great music & sound effects abound in this game, as is the case in all of Kenji Eno's games. It's probably a different experience for each person who plays it because you have to use your imagination to visualize what is happening. Thanks for all the great games & great music Kenji Eno. R.I.P.
