I was born in 91, I grew up watching all of those movies. 80's flicks were by far the best decade for amazing movies, fucking loved them all.

+GamingTutor '91 as well, safe for some lower budget and modern indie movies, I can't stand modern cinema. I find myself digging trough lists on wikipedia to find forgotten or lost gems from the 30 up until the 80s/90s.

My dad had a Laserdisc player back in the 80's, and he gave me a Yamaha Laserdisc player for Christmas. My Godfather used to sell A/V equipment and we got everything at cost. I remember watching a movie and having to flip the disc, I didn't have the fancy player that moved the laser from one side to the other. I also remember having to fish out the second disc to continue watching longer movies. Some companies cheated and put all analog tracks to cut down on data so they didn't have to use multiple sides or discs. I remember looking for Laserdiscs of certain recently released movies, my memory is a bit fuzzy, but I seem to remember at one point it took 6 months after the VHS release before seeing it on Laserdisc. They were $35-40 or more in most cases. Johnny you pulled out two of my Dad's favorite movies Dune and Bladerunner!

as a 90s kid I'm not at all familiar with laser discs, but its great to see a history of really great movies on that format. also, that anime collection is too real. Compared to all the lames trying to fake their way into the cool anime fandom today, you know someone's a true anime fan when they have a retro collection of it on laser discs. nice collection and vid

Bonus/special features were actually pioneered on Laser Disc as well! The early discs were just the movie, but in the later years of the formats life, there were quite a few releases with bonus features. In fact the first commentary tracks were done on LD. I actually have some old DVDs in my collection that have the LD commentary tracks 'ported' over to them.
@Rando1975
@Rando1975 8 жыл бұрын
Yep. I had the dvd of "Chasing Amy" and they used the commentary track from the LD. I have since upgraded to the Blu Ray, but I can't remember if they used the old commentary track. I know there was a new commentary track recorded for the Blu Ray, but it's horrid!

One thing about the LaserDisc technology back in the 80s was it was technically possible to develop a Laserdisc visual novel for the MSX computer. It would have been great if a single title like this had been produced for the educational market as an example. It would be so ahead of its time.

I was sooooo close to saying, "You don't have GHOSTBUST- " oh... there it is. One thing I hated about Laserdiscs and DVD's was when they change the original cover art. The classic Ghostbusters cover is iconic. That Laserdisc cover kinda sucks.

Fine video, and I don't know if anyone else has pointed this out but Laserdisc is in fact an analog format, not digital. Still, far superior to VHS, and this is coming from a collector of both as well as Beta, Laserdisc is the way to go for the vintage stuff, especially Star Wars.

Dam you Johnny, like I needed another collection hobby! Awesome video, really makes want to collect some 80s classic even though I have no intention of getting a Laser Disc player, just for the display factor. How expensive something like Blade Runner or The Thing generally is? Are they still affordable as it's become an obsolete format or have they already become sought after? Edit: Awesome that you gave Black Rain some love :)

Blind Fury is such a good film and so under-rated. I remember watching this film on my 12th or 13th birthday and its always been one of my most nostalgic action films from the early 1990's. I'm actually quite pleased that someone else has very fond memories of this film. Predator is my second favorite arnold Schwarzenegger film of all time and such a timeless classic. I remember Gall Force, I actually had the vhs subtitled version from US Manga Corps and it is such a lovely film with some very beautiful music and I loved how it ended. Out of all the laserdiscs you have, I'm incredibly jealous of your macross plus laserdiscs. They are simply such a lovely site to behold. It actually really amazes me that streamline pictures and us manga corps actually had their products on the laser disc format.
