People need to remember that just because a joke isn't funny doesn't mean it wasn't a joke. The context is what matters. If someone says or does things you don't like then you are well within your right to not watch anything they do or support anything involving them. The issue with cancel culture is it's people trying to take that option away from people and try to take away their platform. Unfortunately it's only going to get worse.

@@LewisC0298 I see what you’re saying but there is a reason these people go digging through someone’s Twitter to find something to cancel them over. I think it’s about the culture war. You want X person GONE for not having your opinions. Cancel culture exists because people want to browbeat others into being quiet, so that their perspective can thrive. Most conservatives aren’t so hateful, yet the left wing is full of self proclaimed victims who do nothing but cry at everything. That’s who control twitter, and that’s why it’s so negative.

@@KiLLJoYKZbin Agreed. You have all these people saying blatantly racist and hateful things and Twitter and facebook will decide that your pro-life post is more dangerous and hide it from your followers. (I imagine they allow this kind of thing to remind people that racism is a huge problem, even though many are just angry pre-teens who think they're being edgy) Then when there is public outcry to cancel a celeb who said something that was "homophobic" 10 years ago they suspend their account indefinitely. Someone calls for an attack and doxes a conservative voice and they are left alone. It's all really stupid and the combination of allowing actual hate speech from people (inciting violence, doxing etc.) and mob mentality of its users makes it almost impossible for any kind of open dialogue on the platforms.

Can we appreciate the distinction between cancel culture and holding people accountable. Lots of people take it too far and try and look for any reason to cancel influencers which is what you're talking about. However, ultimately if a content creator is holds views that I find offensive, eg. transphobic/homophobic/racist, then it is fine for me to stop watching and supporting them

Who defines what is homophobic or racist
@mattroberts85833 жыл бұрын
@@hakim2546 Exactly, everyone has different opinions which evolve over time. If I don't want to watch a content creator because in my mind they are racist, and the overwhelming majority of society thinks the same, then I don't have to watch the creator anymore. If enough people agree, then the creator is 'cancelled'. The creator has the freedom to say whatever they want, but as a society, I, as an individual, have the right to call them a racist and then not support them. It's a 2 way street.

What astounds me is that people are normalising what is basically a mob court mostly made up of anonymous children, being the judge, jury and executioner of people's careers usually without context. Imagine if we had a real life court system where the judge and jury were children that refused to listen to context or opposing arguments to decide a verdict

I think that since social media reached its top, it is so hard to be original and to gain appreciation. Basically because everyone is trying to be original and be themselves, it's hard to do when everything has been seen before. Then you're called a copy. Therefore people feel the need to bring down others or go to extremes just to feel validated and forcing yourself to be something you are not, meanwhile fooling yourself that "this is you" because this version of yourself is getting recognition and the real "you" is not.

Love how people say you can still be racist or homophobic or whatever if you have friends that are gay, black, whatever, I understand that kind of. But when you become friends with so many of these people and grow to love them, then say something or make a joke about them or their culture or whatever, surely if you have all these friends that are black for example and you’ve made a “racist” joke. Surely if you’ve accepted so many black people into your life and become friends with them, surely you aren’t racist or whatever scenario you might be in. Just me?!

I agree as it's equal to if my black mate said something along the lines of "you white boy won't beat me in a race" and then I say but you "black boy won't beat me at a swim". If you can banter like that and you know neither of you are serious and are both joking then I don't see a problem as that just shows that your friendship is well beyond a minor bit of racism. Also I have a ton of black mates and other mates from multiple cultchers and we all poke fun at eachother every now and then but we all know it's jokes and bantering sarcasm.

@joewhite44563 жыл бұрын
Obviously cancel culture can be stupid at times but the way Toby is wording it is ridiculous. For him to say it's stupid to "ruin someones career for something they did a while ago" is crazy. What Shane Dawson did was "a while ago" but I bet he'd agree with what happened to him. If the police found out someone committed a murder ten years ago should they not arrest them because it was "a while ago"? Obviously that's a lot more extreme but the logic of "I ended someone's career because of something they did a while ago" still works in that scenario. You cannot get away with anything you want by saying "it was a while ago". As for saying "there's so many people doing things wrong now" that's like saying "sure I committed a robbery a week ago but the police shouldn't arrest me because there's robberies they should be stopping now" or "sure I said I think all gays should be burnt two years ago, but there's people that say that now so don't hold me accountable!" The whole "it wasn't my opinion" is crazy, if you're defending an offensive opinion it doesn't matter if you hold that opinion you're still backing it up, it's like people who vote for trump but say they aren't racist, by voting for someone who will harm other races you are supporting racism. (Obviously I don't know what the tweet was, just pointing out the floored logic in protecting an opinion then saying "it's not my opinion though") As for "people can grow and change", of course they can, but if someone says something offensive and never addresses it then should we all just assume they've changed? If Charles Bronson didn't say anything offensive for ten years would we all just say "but it was a long time ago, people can change"? Obviously that's not on the same scale as just tweeting something offensive but it shows how absurd it is to just assume people's opinions have changed. His analogy is completely incorrect. Of course if something was seen as okay at the time it's not appropriate to hold them accountable by today's standards as there was nothing wrong at the time, but 99% of the things people are "cancelled" for are things that are racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic/fatphobic etc that weren't okay ten years ago and aren't okay now. Yes gay might have been used as another word for bad at the time, but only by children, if you were an adult and couldn't see that using someone's sexuality to mean bad isn't okay that's on you, you can't just blame society because you were part of society and part of the reason society used it in that way.

So you’re comparing somebody’s using their free speech with murder and robbery? Alrighty then 👍🏼
@joewhite44563 жыл бұрын
@@liammurtagh601 if you could actually read you'd realise I said it was an extreme example but it proves the absurdity of their logic. Where exactly did I compare those two things? Also just because free speech is a thing doesn't mean you're free from consequences of what you say.
@tomitankengine3 жыл бұрын
I hear what you're saying. I don't agree with cancel culture at all but people nowadays think that merely calling someone out for something they did means they're trying to cancel them. Some of them just want to know that you no longer hold that opinion or educate you on the topic. Obviously some people take it too far (usually the stan accounts) but I think the majority don't.
@liammurtagh6013 жыл бұрын
@@joewhite4456 So what exactly should the consequences be for the words people use? People are allowed to say anything they want and if you don’t like it that’s too bad, we aren’t the judge . If you don’t like what somebody says stop listening to them, it’s that simple. The thing everybody seems to missing the point of is that when we start allowing censorship of words it becomes a very slippery slope and where is the line drawn? People nowadays are so freely giving up basic human rights in the pursuit of some strange virtue of being able to point out who the “bad people” are so that they can portray themselves as the “good people”. Virtue signalling is a very strange concept and needs to be used very carefully.
@joewhite44563 жыл бұрын
@@liammurtagh601 depends, if someone feels like they want to stop following someone because of their words then that's the consequences. If people stop buying someone's merch then that's the consequences. "If you don't like what someone says stop listening" that's the most backwards thing I've heard. For example if there was a far right preacher trying to convince people that being gay should be illegal should we just "not listen" if we don't like it? No, obviously not. As I said, no one is suggesting censorship. Free speech is still a thing and no one wants to stop free speech. You can say whatever you want without being censored but obviously if you say something racist, homophobic ect people are going to dislike you.
