I work at a pet store, and the number of parents who don't do any research on the pet their kid wants is downright depressing. Any parent should know the basics in case they have to take over caring for the animal, and it's really frustrating to me when parents just want to buy the pet to make their kid happy and then get upset when they realize how much it will cost to properly care for them. 10 min on Google people... that's all it takes to get an idea of what you're getting yourself into

Loura Canisara my mom got me three Bettas because I have stomach problems so she felt bad so she took me to petco (without any research) I got two females and my brother got a male, I got a one gallon tank for both females and .5 gallon for the male about, a week later we separated the females as they were fighting, three months later I found out one fish had dropsy she got better but then we were pet sitting a cat and she died,I got more into pets as my birthday was coming up and I wanted mice I was doing allot of research not just for mice all animals I found out that the minimum for a betty is 2.5 gallons (some people say more) I started feeling really bad and I started saving up I now have both bettas in a 3.5 gallon tank with heaters (Not in he same tank)

I would recommend a leopard gecko if it’s your first time owning a gecko . I have two geckos called Houdini and Gary and they are pretty easy to look after, you need to spot clean them everyday , fill up their water and food , and you will need to clean their cage fully sometimes. They need a tank or aquarium to live in and a heat lamp ! I hope you can get your mom to get you a gecko

While I do agree on not having rabbits as a pet for kids, some do enjoy cuddles and like to be picked up. Watch a video by Lennonthebunny. Shes a famtastic youtuber and her bunny lennon(lenny) is just teh sweetest thing. They have an amazing bond. So really it all depends on how often you interact with your rabbit and your connstant growibng bond :) And if you get them as a baby and you pick them up everyday they will grow up being handled and will be comfortable (:

Hey, please don't get a ferret until you're older and can buy it and everything it needs yourself as their maintenance is very expensive. They require a friend of the same gender from birth, a BIG cage (half the room sometimes) and lots of stimulation. Also they don't tend to like being handled.

Try getting to it’s level on the ground. Rabbits get intimidated by people/other animals taller then them. Try laying down on the ground and play on your device or read a book and then rabbit will come to you.

My family and I are looking for a pet ...... My dad is not a pet person at all but my mom wants a pet that doesn't have a strong oder, one I can take care of myself and one that's not very expensive ( it would be better if it were in a cage or tank). My 10 yr old sister wants a pet that she can interact once in awhile. I am in 8th grade (13 years old) and I do play sports after school, so if it’s a social pet I won’t be able to interact with it very often. Rocky Larry I would say fish. Not much oder, though you can't interact I would say fish are great for teaching younger kids responsibility. But you would have to clean the tank and everything. If you have a younger sister, I would recommend as a good starter guppies, or better yet, shrimp. Shrimp are really funny and really cute. If you do go for fish, I would say if you want to keep the cost low, and easy maintenance, use marbles to cover the bottom, 10-15 gallon tank, no more than 6 guppies, 2 ghost shrimp and a couple of zebra nirite snails. Along with just a heater, total cost 100-150. You shouldn't need a filter if you do water changes often. I know you said your sister wanted something to interact with, but fish are really fun to watch, and shrimp..... yeah...But as a fish person, fish are amazing and fun to keep, not to mention it's a great starter pet to warn your parents up to the idea of pets. Another tip, DO NOT OVERSTOCK. Even the fish numbers I gave you are pushing it, so go as big as you can tank wise. Whatever let you do end up getting through, best of luck!

Ferrets are not pets for kids! A teenager would be fine but a child should only be with a ferret under supervision. A ferret also takes so much time and effort. A ferret can be a great family pet but should not be a childs pet.

It should be made very clear because if a ferret is mishandled they can bite and a kids reaction would make it worse making it a very bad accident. The ferret could then be forced to be rehomed and it just adds to the amount of ferrets in shelters who are stressed.

Hello!! I have 17 guinea pigs. I have 7 males and 8 females, the other two are unknown because they are only pups :) I love them. And all 17 of them live in a 10 ft by 10 ft enclosure outside. Besides the mother and the two pups, they are being kept inside for winter, seeing they were born a few weeks ago and won't have there winter coats in time, there birth was unexpected, before the mother and the two now she had five, and after they were born she accidentally got pregnant again without is aware. But they are very healthy, there were 3 new borns but one passed away during birth. I'm 11 and my mum is a childminder. She had guinea pigs when she was 9 and she bred hers too. The kids that my mum looks after love the guinea pigs so much!! And I hope that you have taken your time to read my comment. Even thought it's very long.

If your a kid I honestly would recommend a ferret. They need your full attention even though they sleep a lot, they need a very large cage and they have a pretty strong oder. Caring for a ferret is a lot harder and takes a lot more time than most pets, and you should get 2 ferrets Bc if you can’t give them your undivided attention they’ll probably get depressed.

Guinea pigs are a lot of work, so far we’ve spent hundreds of dollars on them and they need a lot of space. Also hay is expensive unless you live near a farm. Their diet consists of hay and should only be fed 1/8 of a cup of pellets per guinea pig and 10-15% of their body weight in veggies per day. They also should be weighed once a week to make sure they’re healthy so you’ll need a scale to weight them and their food. All these pets are a lot more work then you’d think. Guinea pig females are prone to ovarian cysts and most guinea pigs you buy at the pet store have lice so be prepared to spend some money at the vet.

bunnies can be good tween pets, i'm a tween and from my experience they can be a bit difficult to handle and play with. they need a lot of attention if you only have one. males can get quite nippy and they scratch a lot. females are less nippy and can be less territorial than males, but they do tend to scratch accidentally. i've seen that females are a bit more affectionate than a male might be, however during spring/early summer they both do get quite territorial due to hormones. you CAN take a rabbit outside, but if you have raccoons near you or live where raccoons are common i don't recommend taking them out because there is a disease spread by raccoons that rabbits get and it it uncureable, it will kill them if they get it. if you're comfortable with taking them outside, then you should have a playpen for them to be in, i recommend one at least a foot or two tall, they can jump out of anything shorter than that.

I've had a lot of pets throughout my life so far. The pets I had were tamed and domesticated easily. Rabbits, dogs, cats, and birds. If they get the right amount of care and attention, they won't be a problem :) now I want a ferret, but I doubt it I'll get one :(

All of these animals are kind of hard to take care of. If you go into depth in how to take care of each pet, it will be very expensive and be difficult to take care of them. Also, every pet mentioned is a long time commitment ranging from a life span of 2- 10 years!!
