Harbor Freight engine Stand modified for 1600 CC Classic VW engines

A A performance products sells this stand, but the new HF engine stand has a smaller diameter tube now and this stand will be too big to fit in it. You have to find an old HB engine stand if you want this to fit in it. I just figured this out the hard way.

I have almost same set up but I cut the top tube of the harbor freight stand and welded the VW bench stand on the harbor freight did it 2 years ago and use all the time.

Hi there I hope you’re doing well. Yeah at some point that was my thoughts to cut off the base and weld the new 1600 one. But because the OD on the head tube was the same 2-3/8 , I just drilled a new hole and tapped. I lucked out. 😄... thanks for your comments. It’s always good sharing different ideas. I just bought that yoke. I dont know if I want to use a larger stand or a smaller one. the larger is more stable, but considering how small VW engine is, I might be tripping over the bottom legs.

Good info, i have few HF small engine stands that need this modifcation. JR found LJ web site like your idea. This is a great price i need a few of these ok maybe start with 2 of them. I have around 4 HF engine stands, no wonder i have no room in my garage. I visit on the phone with Slade he a good guy. You want to talk vws let me know ..

Hello there good to hear from you, I am really happy I found a set up that I did not need to modify the HB orinal head base, because I use it when I work on other types of engines. The OD of the tube base is a perfect match. It is 2-3/8 who’s is the same as the HB stand. Thank for your support. Have a Superb day.

I called LJ Aircooled Engines .. told them about this KZbin video…and their engine stand component.. they said they don’t carry it… I was soooo ready to buy. 😢. Will the Harbor Freight mount work for basic tear down?

Yes, but there is going to be a time when you are installing the jugs that the actual head from the stand will interfere.

I know you mentioned 1600 dual port engines. Wondering if it should be good bigger aircooled Vw engines...right? Btw I picked up both thx to your info🤙🏼

This stand is also good for bigger engines too. The modification to the stand was just an added feature for the classic VW engines. If you are building any of these engines 1641, 1776, 1835, 1904, 1914, 2110, 2180, 2275, 2332, its should bolt right on. Thanks for watching.

but, it's a mystery to me how you mount the engine on the stand? it's not a one man job?

Hi there. When the engine is fully assembled it’s a two men job. If you are fully restoring the engine block is not as you mount the engine case in the engine head stand and the mount it to the stand. The case bay itself is not heavy. Thank for your comments.

What bolt did you use to put yolk on?
