excellent discussion and video , couldn't agree more. This is a fine unit if used appropriately. We have owned one for about 6 months now . Learning how to use it and feed it is as important as pulling the cord and starting it. Shorter rather than longer is preferred, especially on the side chute 3 inches is a max, The side chute doesn't like pieces with bends or shoots , it will jam in the tube . IF we prep the branches just a little before feeding the unit it will never fail. Use a small hatchet to prep the larger pieces if necessary, trim the side shoots of the branches. , Feed the top chute bin slowly, it's only got a 2 inch wide opening going into the blades so don't try to feed too much at one time, work slowly. Let the machine do it's work don't force it. We have used ours 6 or 7 times so far , cleaning up storm debris, fallen limbs etc . we also maintain and clean out a section of natural wooded area behind our home which promotes natural growth. We create piles of debris, larger branches are put aside. It really only takes about 30 minutes to go thru a large pile and turn them into chips, working slowly. Can't stress enough. let the machine work at it's own pace, don't force it. I have read countless reviews where users said it was junk, didn't work etc, thats because they are forcing it to act like a commercial machine which it is not. Dry wood and branches goes thru this thing like butter, wet new cut wood is a bit more work as it should be. Feed it slowly pay a attention to what feeds well and what doesn't , adjust the way you use it and feed it and this thing will sing ! Plus it will last a very long time if you don't try to force it to work harder than it should. Its a $450 machine , not a $ 15,000 machine. If your plan is to buy one of these and chip an entire tree, save your money. Thats not what its purpose is.

We've had this chipper about 5-6 years now, using it a couple of times a year. I don't recall paying anything near its current price of $600. We noticed some problems early on. The chute wouldn't stay up unless its hinge screw was made very tight and then it stressed the hinge. We solved that with a bungee cord. The muffler cover wouldn't stay on and the screws for it would vibrate off. I didn't find a solution for that. The discharge bag isn't made well and its fabric is plastic. An edge of it touched the hot muffler and melted. We've had to repair it several times. The shredder has a lot of torque and it would cause the unit to move around on its own when placed on concrete even with the wheels locked. The solution was to operate it on the lawn. We have many live oak and water oak trees and they shed branches. Unless very small, they are murder when the riding lawn mowing encounters them with damage to its mandrels and blades. So, it was time to gather them all up on our 2 acre lot and shred them. Most of the way through, the machine worked well. When moving it from site to site, I noticed that the motor would stall out when tilting it backward while I was pulling it and it was then it was difficult to restart. This was with a full tank of gasoline. Finally, it tried to eat a 1.5" branch and then developed a lot of vibration and stalled out while just running under no load. I found that it had shot into the ground one of its 2 L-hammers. The main housing and rear housing got pretty chewed up and those parts are not available for replacement except by special order, which takes about 3 months to arrive from China. The L-hammer's bolt also broke off inside the rotor assembly. Part of a rectangular hammer also broke off. The bolts for these are also not available from Harbor Freight. They do sell the rotor assembly but none of those parts are on it, it's only the plate itself. The ordering process was easy and pleasant over the phone (you can't order parts online). In summary, like many HF tools, the chipper/shredder is over-rated as well as being more expensive now. It cannot handle 2" hardwood branches unless they have been so softened by the elements that they easily be broken with your hands. You can forget about it handling 3". Repairs will be a major challenge. A 4", highly rated chipper will cost 3 times as much or more. In my opinion, at $600, it's just not worth it.

Sounds like someone found a way to the complete opposite of the review - of course with no video or supporting evidence. We have seen the chipper work 3" branches in the video above and a guy that seems like he totally knows what he is talking about demonstrate it. You are basically saying the thing is a piece of crap - not believable. Sorry you had to re invent it in the lab and re build as a totally new design. Holy crap. UPDATE: Bought it, used it, loved it. Not a single issue nor did I have to redesign it with its falling parts. LOL
@jaysigel9837 Жыл бұрын
I'm glad you like it. I think that my problem descriptions were graphic enough without images to prove them. I didn't know that was necessary. I don't know if any 3" chipper would perform better. Since getting the replacement parts, it performs adequately, especially with bamboo. But for anything approaching 2" diameter, we have to be very cautious. Oak is a very tough wood and we have about a dozen of them, both live oaks and water oaks, and they shed large branches. The larger pieces we cut up with a chain saw and donate to the folks that like to use their fireplaces. Most likely, damage was accumulative. It's basically a giant garbage disposal. Once the sharp parts get dull enough, jams will occur and the inside will self-destruct. Nothing lasts forever. Like I said, the chute, bag and muffler cover we can tolerate and those aren't serious faults, just a reflection on its overall quality. I just don't want to have to tear it down again. Quality control and Harbor Freight are contradictions of terms. Most people know that. You can just read the product reviews on their website. Once you review your purchase there and give them a positive review, if you should later on find problems, you can't update your review, do things are worse than they appear there. Many products are fine, many not, but I'll agree that you can find inferior products just about anywhere. So, I just recommend caution. When I post reviews, I like to make them informative.

@@jaysigel9837 But I didn't like your review! You are using a small chipper to do massive amounts of work. This chipper is for a guy with a normal house with some shrubs and a couple of trees that he maintains yearly. Not for a compound or a property full of grown trees. It is a LITE WORK CHIPPER. Also, quality at HF is amazing and their price point ridiculously good. I always buy a service agreement and if something goes wrong, they give me a new one. Recently bought their $50 chain saw - cut down my girlfriend's overgrown pines and it worked amazing - but there were only six with branches maximum 4 inches. A regular chain saw costs $500 - you need to have better perspective as to what Harbor Freight power tools are for CASUAL DOMESTIC USE! Make your reviews accordingly! You are harming Harbor Freight with your deceiving descriptions.

Thanks so much for your review! Nobody else has the testicles to say “it’s good, buy it”. Others are wishy-washy because it’s from Harbor Freight. There are plenty of Craftsman products I’d never buy either. People focus on the chipper function but it’s main function is the shredder. I want metal blades not the electric models that use trimmer cords. Wet leaves kill these trimmer models but you get what you pay for. The chipper was thrown on as a bonus. Dead branches fall all the time but if you need a chainsaw to cut and downsize your trees those branches are considered as firewood if they are over 3”. Your video helped me to decide on this model. It’s aggressive and dependable. I especially like the large hopper to throw the leaves in rather than spoon-feeding it. Thumbs up!

I am on my 2nd one of these chippers. The first one I let a friend borrow and he loved it so much (and broke it) that he bought me a brand new one and kept my old one. He got the replacement parts needed and still loves it. I put well over 100 hours on the first unit and probably getting up to around 80 hours now on the 2nd unit. I've made piles of branches, blackberries, and other yard waste and spent up to 5 hours in a day shredding stuff. Both units have had the muffle heat shield screws vibrate out and then the shield broke off. Both units, like in the video, have had the ejection chute cover flapping all about. I tried to tighten it but it always comes loose. So I just took it off. The long tube for branches is a major PITA when it comes to anything with a twist or bend. It is the single biggest reason I want a larger chipper so I can have a hole large enough to take a 1 inch branch with a bend or small trees and branches with a Y. I spend more time cutting and trimming everything just to fit in the chipper and it is really annoying. I have not yet been able to get the blades off for sharpening either. I can't get access to one of the nuts on each blade.

I’m very interested in your experience shredding blackberry vines. Seems like every shredder I look into states the machine won’t handle blackberry vines. I have a TON. Did you shred them wet or dry? Anything you had trouble with? Thanks!
@fmixthings3 жыл бұрын
@@catherinesutthoff1889 blackberries are no problem at all wet or dry. Fresh they are pretty soft and will go through the branch chute with ease. Dry they don't get very hard, only more brittle. I've put them in both the shredder hopper and the branch chute, both seem to work just fine. The only concern you have to watch out for is the really long vines, like 10ft or more, will whip around and can catch you. Just be aware, get the vine in and move aside. Let the chipper take it in. Use a full mesh face shield with ears like the chainsaw pros use. It will protect your face from flying debris. I was shot in the shoulder by a rock when I was a kid using my parents chipper, had eyes and ears on, but not full face. I only use full face now. For smaller branches and softer material yard clean up like blackberries, the HF chipper is a beast.

That's a good review. I bought mine at HF about 3 months ago and I used it quite a bit at first. This is not my first chipper/shredder. It's my third one after having two Craftsman units in the past. My first Craftsman, I gave to my dad and it worked like a champ. The second Craftsman finally locked up and I gave it away too. This one from HF is better because it has replaceable wheels while the Craftsman had the axle end caps that could only be removed with an angle grinder. On the downside, the HF is very loud, enough so that standard earmuff style hearing protection is not enough. I need earplugs AND the earmuff hearing protection. I've thought about reworking the exhaust to rise above my head, but I know a lot of the noise comes from the machinery itself, not just the exhaust. I've been tempted to remove the floppy cover over the debris chamber at the top of the unit as it simply gets in the way of the small items I'm trying to shred. I know it's a safety feature, and I haven't removed it yet, but I am very tempted. Otherwise, it's a great chipper/shredder and worth the cost.

Just bought one of these, it runs pretty well, the top debris intake is small and will "bridge" material if it is not quite small. Have also heard from other users that the limb blades are not sharp from the factory and sharpening the blades will help a lot. Only one day of use so far and seems decent. The hammers could probably be upgraded for the debris chute. Would love to see some metal fabricator "upgrades" to the base unit.

I have owned this chipper for three years. The motor shaft has broken three times chipping limbs 2-3" in size. My recommendation is that you buy the warranty with this chipper (sadly I did not). HF will exchange the unit under warranty as long as there is no gas in the tank. The 212CC motor shaft breaks at the shoulder. I also purchased a new cutting wheel as my original was bent. The new wheel comes with cutting blades so do not buy them separately. The cost of the wheel is not much more than the cost of the blades. I did notice the new design has a shorter hub and mounts closer to the plate against the motor. This is likely to reduce the stress due to the cantilevered wheel. Hopefully, the shaft will last longer.

I had been chipping for about 15 minutes and the engine fell off right into the dirt. I took the machine apart to tighten the bolts and discovered that they were actually broken off. The problem with many users of any equipment or tools, is understanding that the maximum is the absolute maximum, not the norm. "Up to" in usages is almost the same as saying "as low as" in prices. You are not going to like what you see in those numbers. Yes it "can" do it, but best below those ranges. Cars "can" run 120+ mph, but not on a daily long drive basis. Not if you don't want to burn it out. Know the limits and be smart about it.

I cut my own firewood, have a small wood stove and I like to use as much of the tree as possible, so everything down to and including 2 1/2 inch I use, but I need to clean up what is left, so something like this might do the job and chip up everything below 2 1/2" that I have to clean up. The one thing I wish it had is a discharge shoot that will blow it out like a snow blower and spread it out over the forest floor instead of just making a pile next to the machine .

good video...was hoping to see more "green" stuff being either chipped or shredded. Stuff on video looks very dry, which of course eases chipping. Thanks.

So I tried it today and I am really disappointed with it. Says it can handle 3" branches, but 2" branches caused mine to jam and stall the engine. All I could feed was 1.5" or less and it struggled on those, sometimes jamming. Southern Yellow Pine branches, a soft wood. There is NO WAY I could put a 3" branch into it. It needs a more powerful engine. Now I have to call a professional with an industrial chipper to get rid of all the branches. All I can chip and shred is 1" or less with it.
@GettinJunkDone Жыл бұрын
That is a bummer. I can understand why you're disappointed.

That Predator sounds nice. Just put the 212 on my dads old Troy Bilt Horse 1 tiller he got in 77 and now it’s got some gumption. What would be best for chopping up bulk produce for making compost?
@GettinJunkDone3 жыл бұрын
A chipper like this one would probably do just fine for leafy greens, apples, and such.

Hello, Thanks for posting the video. Does the machine shred loose leaves or only small branches with leaves?

Could you or someone else please comment on its efficacy for mulching large amounts of leaves via the hopper?
@johnjude26853 жыл бұрын
Great follow up, I'm thinking it's going to need to sometimes need to be restarting and the way it nearly tilting and wobble might be prevented with a bar across the bottom of the front leg bar giving more width and stabling it (I don't like wobbly crap but they cut the cost a little) Thank you for the teaching Sir 😁

Just bought this chipper last year and I love it for all of the branches that fall from the many mature trees in my yard. Does anyone have tips for getting the leaves to go through more efficiently? My leaves/debris tend to get stuck and I have been just poking them with a larger stick to try to get them to go through, but sometimes the bottom mechanism doesn't quite pull them through as much as I had hoped.
@RCPSU42 жыл бұрын
I think what I've seen others do is move the leaves around with a larger branch or just feed them in slowly.

Bro I own a lawn care company and in thinking about this item for all the branches I pick up in people's yards do you think it would be good for that for fallen limbs
@GettinJunkDone4 жыл бұрын
If you plan on keeping up with the oil changes, and blade sharpening, it would be fine in my opinion. I also run a lawn care company and have done that exact same thing with it. I'm not taking it out with me everyday, but a few times a year I run a good size load of small sticks and branches through it. I've had it running for hours at a time, and have never had an issue with it starting or handling what I throw at it. It has clogged once or twice, but that was from me pushing it passed it's limits. I unclogged it and went right back to work. It is a solid chipper and I recommend it as long as you work within it's limitations.

@@GettinJunkDone awesome bro i already watch your channel. Im always carrying around limbs in my truck which i dont like so im thinking about carrying this on the trailer instead. most limbs that fall are dead except when we have storms. How heavy is this thing?
@GettinJunkDone4 жыл бұрын
It does come with a bag that you can cinch around the output to catch the chips and dust. It would work pretty good for that. It might be cumbersome to carry around everyday and start it up for just a few branches. it might be a better use of time and space to get a dedicated can on your trailer for these branches then chip them at home for compost or mulch. Doing that every so often vs every day, depending on the amount of branches you, might be more efficient. The chipper itself is heavy. I have pulled it up into the back a pick up using the handle, but I sure wish I had a friend with me that day. It can be done. However, it olls pretty good on the provided wheels.
@stevew61384 жыл бұрын
Greetings, so am I to understand so long as the limbs are 2-2.5 inch they can be chipped green? Or did I miss something? BTW, 3ich dia. is firewood in my book...so...lol. Take care and thanx for the review.

I had an "arborist" (yeah, right) come in and cut down a bunch of trees. After he got all his money, he disappeared and left all the tree branches for me to clean up. So, I've got the choice of renting a big chipper from Home Depot for $ 325 per day or buying this chipper on sale at Harbor freight for $ 500 plus tax and having it around forever for future work. Or, I could sell it for $ 400 and still be ahead on price when I'm done with my branches. I'm starting to talk myself into running over to Harbor Freight tomorrow before the price goes back up. I guess all I really need to do is make sure my branches are less than 3" - or just split the bigger ones with a hatchet.

How heavy are these to put around? I am a 130lb female and somewhat strong but curious how hard it would be go to up very slight inclines.
@GettinJunkDone Жыл бұрын
If the wheels are inflated, it rolls pretty good. When you say incline, do you mean something like a driveway, or more like a trailer ramp. I can get it up a trailer ramp, but its significant effort. I'm 6 foot, 200 lbs.

causes me to consider if there could be a way to slow down the feed speed when larger diameter branches are put in the chute if that would enable it to 'keep goin'@ chewing up the 3" branches

Great idea. Your comment was a while ago, did you ever figure out a way to do this?
@evarsonazevedo5321 Жыл бұрын
So can it handle anything smaller than 3 inches that is fresh cutted or green and full with leaves? I noticed that the branches you're shredded seems to be dried already.

I was hoping to see how you load the leaves. And what looks like when you mount the leaves. And how it throws it out. Is that what the top hopper is far?
@GettinJunkDone2 жыл бұрын
Yup, that's what it's for. It works just fine as long as you don't overload it at one time. DO NOT put your hands into the hopper, or your leaf shredding days could be over. Instead use a stout stick to push them down when needed.

Will this shred bamboo? How safe are these things? I'm thinking about buying one and I'm creeped out about it lol. I can see my arm getting caught in it.
@GettinJunkDone2 жыл бұрын
Don't get your arm caught. That's probably the first rule. It's a good machine and I'd buy it again. Just don't stick anything in there you don't want destroyed, including body parts.

Nice review. Other than branches, have you used it to shred leaves, shrub trimmings, General brush? I have to clear out some thick overgrowth, i have equipment to cut it, looking for an alternative to bagging it up Like ivy, things like that
@GettinJunkDone6 жыл бұрын
I have run a bunch of stuff like that through it without a problem. The only issue is that it sometimes fights back while being put into the hopper. I sometimes use a thick stick on small log as a "push stick". Just be careful doing that.

Hey - Nice video and demonstration of how this Chipper works! You do a good job with your videos - thanks! Wondering if you have tried feeding sticks into the large hopper? Often I rake up piles of leaves that have sticks included and wonder what size of stick the large hopper/feed can handle? Also had an old Craftsman Chipper but it was prone to jamming up if fed too fast. Have you see any issues like that with this machine? Thanks again for great videos!
