Thank you SO much for that Tim. I am ordering my first photo printer today- Canon Pro 1000 (from Fotospeed’🙂). It will be my first time actually doing my own printing and although I have had a few photos professionally printed, I’m looking forward to doing my own. I have had difficulty in changing my mindset from my old b&w darkroom days using test strips but this is perfect and will help me tremendously 👍

To me, this is golden. I have just set up my nice new Canon Pro 1000 printer and wanted to have something similar to the old test strips that I used to use in my black and white darkroom. This is perfect. Only thing I would have liked, would have been an A 5 option to reduce paper even further. Otherwise top marks to Canon and yourself for flagging it 👍

Thanks Tim. Good stuff. Am I missing something…. when you are in LR ( with the photo open ) and then open the Canon software, is there no need to export the file out of LR first?

How did you manage to get the same bordersizes? When I print with a small border, the side of the border which gets into the printer first, is a little bit larger then the others.

Hi Tim, thanks for the info. I'm used to print from Photoshop using ICC profiles for the different types of Fine Art papers, after editing my images in Lightroom, but I have a bit of a mess with the settings, regarding CMYK or RGB mode, so I'm going to try this software. But I would like to know if the file I import from Lightroom should be in tiff or jpg and if I can add ICC profiles for different brands of papers as well. Thank you so much😊

I've got a Pro-4100. Why did the hard proofing limit the test print to A3? What happens if I try to print on a 24" roll instead of an A3 cut sheet?

I assume this will work in Photoshop as I don’t like Lightroom for printing. 16x10 is hopeless in Lightroom & the print never looks the same as it does from photoshop. I assume this software will work with my ancient now pro100? I have just downloaded the software & can't get it to work in either. So there goes that. Thanks Tim.

Hi Nicky, Yes the plugin will be under Automate in Photoshop. It looks like on the Pro-100 you will have to use the older Studio Pro plugin which, as far as I know, does include the Pattern Print. Tim

Thank you Tim . Excellent as ever . One thought I had - I find printing from Lightroom easier when setting up custom templates . Could you type in the adjustments for brightness and contrast from the canon pattern print into Lightroom ( either in the print module b&c settings or the basic module ) and then print . I guess what I’m asking is are the adjustments on the canon software calibrated with Lightroom or are they different because they are different softwares?

hi there, I'm finding that printing from LR (which i always did using Epson printers) is REALLY different using the Canon, like you say, setting up custom templates is so easy in LR. However, I was getting terrible results, and it's taken me ages and ages and ages to resolve. Canon helplines and call centres were less than useless. Now I use the Prof Print and Layout, and have managed to work out how to set profiles. I now print from there, and yes, it's a pain not being able to print from LR but the end result is better. I'm still trying to use the plug in but wonder if my desktop Imac 2013 is simply not compatible as I've not managed to get that sorted. Let me know how you get on :)

Great video thanks Tim. Once you have selected the adjustments to use in PP&L would you then have to re-input these every time you make a repeat print or is it possible to exactly replicate the adjustments in Lightroom so they are baked into the file?

Great information as a picture framer I think the test prints woulds look great framed up so won't go to waste if the subject is appropriate. I have the 4100 from you and noticed you had black point compensation ticked in the PP&L software, could you please briefly explain the use of it as I read somewhere else that they never use it!

Hi Paul, I always say to have Black Compensation tick as it will hold the black point for you and give you constant results. However saying that there are no rules really so print a couple of test prints one with and one without to see which you prefer. Tim

Black Point Compensation is necessary when your rendering intent is Relative. Because with Relative Colorimetric, out of gamut colors and tones are clipped, so is the black point and so if it is not compensated for then the blacks in the image become muddied. Black Point Compensation is unnecessary for Perceptual. All out of gamut colors and tones are shifted to the nearest in gamut color and tone to maintain the perception of homogenous tonality.

Such a shame it doesn't work at all in OS Monterey. I just bought the Pro-300 and tried to use it through ON1 but a notice came up saying the software was unable to use PSD, TIF or JPG files. Huh. This is a known issue for about a year now. I was using Print-Tool before I upgraded (from a PixmaPro 9000 Mark II) so I guess I'll just stick with that. I bought my new printer on your reviews. Hi Terry, I have it working through Monterey and Photoshop/ Lightroom without a problem. I did have to manually install the plugin in Photoshop though. Does the program work as a stand alone and not a plugin? Tim

Thanks for the video! It's not appearing in Photoshop 23.0.1 (Big Sur 11.16.1) under Automate on my system (Pro-300). Lightroom is fine as per this video. I've tried installing the '.plugin' files manually to Plug-ins folders but but no luck so far.

Hi Rexx, I have had a look into this and it does seem that the plugin won't appear with the Photoshop update. I have asked the question to Canon to see if there is a work around. You will be able to still use the Stand alone version by saving your Photoshop file and opening the image in the PPL. I'm hoping Canon solve this quickly. Tim

@@FotospeedUK Thanks Tim. I'm on an M1 Mac, so it dawned on me to try using Photoshop in Rosetta mode, and then the plugin appears. So Canon need to do some tweaking there, I can't speak for Intel Macs on this tho. Stand alone works fine. Enjoying my Pro-300, it arrived last week!!

Hi Martin, that is a good question it depends on how you have setup your Lightroom in preferences to handle the export of files to plugins. I have mine setup as Tiff 16bit. The option is under preferences and file handling. Tim

Hi Everyone, I just wanted to add a comment to say that I have worked around the issue with Photoshop 2022 not displaying the Professional Print and Layout. The work around is to locate the PPL folder with your older version of Photoshop Plugin folder. Copy this folder into the new 2022 Photoshop Plugin folder, restart Photoshop and the plugin should be there. Tim

Everytime I goto print it errors. 300 pro, my gp2000 does ok but the program is trash. Im sorry its the only thing we have in order to get our profiles clean and print but Canon really messed up on being professional. I can print one day and everything works and the next day it gives us so many errors when sending. its a trash program for 2022. Been printing for 30 yrs and never seen a program this bad just trying to get it to print. Simple jobs can take a nightmare of our time. it sucks!

Hi Ian, I am afraid not however you can use it as a stand alone piece of software. You can do this by saving your file from Affinity and opening it in the PPL. Tim
