This, in my opinion, is the best overview that I've seen on principles of hard-surface modeling and techniques for tricky modeling situations. I really appreciate it being focused and concise while using simple examples instead of overly complicated ones. Also, I enjoyed the narration. She was very articulate, easy to understand, and spoke at a reasonable pace. That being said, I do already some understanding of 3D modeling and common tools used. So, that probably helped me keep up. The only issue that I had was how harsh the S's she pronounced were. Thank you for making this video! I'll be searching for more of your content.

Thank you Michael, comments like this really encourage me to put more videos every now and then when I get the chance, not sure if you will be interested but I am almost finishing up a compositing tutorial which is also more about the general principles.

As a blender user this tutorial transitions perfectly. I didn't realize how similar all the tools are. Before I thought blender was just a hobbiest tool, but after seeing this it seems it hardly matters what tool you use.

Every 3D package shares the same general paradigms. It's the artist not the tool but if a job requires a specific tool then it's easy to quickly learn it which is great

To me, the video is great, short and pretty informative, shows the different ways to achieve results. I think it is a good idea to record a woman's voice instead of a man's voice because it's more lively, attracts attention much better and it's easier to listen to it. I see no issues at all with how it sounds. I'm waiting for more lessons! Thumbs up and keep on publishing new videos!

Thanks a lot Daniel! To be honest it seems lately we get more comments about the voice-over we have paid a voice actress to record and our studio name in Russian than the actual videos content :) But comments like yours and many others do give us a push to record few more. We are now more focused on creating game assets and packs for the Unity asset store and I have been learning programming for a while now, But I have a mind yet to record new tutorial series but it might take up to year to start making this kind of tutorials again as these videos do require some research and planning on how to present them. Thanks again for the kind words.

Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing it. I have one question as follow, how can you hide the environment map in the viewport when the environment map still take effect ? I tried many times on this,when I turn off the environment map, the reflect effect also dissappear.
@Aliismail3D6 жыл бұрын
Hi, one way to do it is using a DX shader, select DirectX Shader as material, set diffuse as black and specular as white, Specular power to 0, TICK REFLECTION ENABLE!, select the DDS map as reflection map and make sure the viewport is set to high quality realistic materials with maps. (Guys Help! thumbs up so that others can view this reply and find the answer quickly, Thx!)

Great to hear that, we never really intend for our tutorials to be software specific, we try as much as possible to explain only the principles and not focus on the technical details.

Also a Blender user who has struggled to find quality hard surface overviews. I bought the HardOps/BoxCutter bundle and it is fantastic, but requires a good, general, understanding of how the operations work under the hood. It’s not a 1 click solution, but it helps to work hand in hand with what is already in Blender. It’s just a pity that the tutorials from MasterXeon1001 are mostly timelapses of him building awesome stuff without a noob really knowing what’s going on.

I used to use Turbosmooth with supoort edge loops for years but recently switch to using Creaseset and OpenSubDiv. have you tried it? what do you think?
@Aliismail3D6 жыл бұрын
Yes, CreaseSets are very useful and you should use them whenever they do the job. I personally do not use them that often because I feel the crease controls are not smooth enough for the results I want (It's usually either too soft or too sharp). That's why I prefer to have more control over the mesh while building it stage by stage using smoothing groups or controlling where my support loops would go. But again, if the crease modifier is working fine for you, you should certainly keep using it as it will save you time.

So... when's your "how to model a 3D car" tutorial coming?
@Aliismail3D7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your interest. It's going to take some time because I am not going to simply record a timelapse of my car modeling, instead I will have some chapters on the basics and camera matching, and I will model the car several times to find the most optimal procedures before recording the final version, not to mention that some projects at our studio could distract from it. I am aiming for 3 Months from now, roughly speaking, to have it completed and uploaded by early October, I will try to release a trailer or an update when I am half-way through. If anyone has any requests to include in my car modeling tutorial please feel free to do so, now is the best time.
@Aliismail3D7 жыл бұрын
Hi Roger, I have received so many requests on camera matching which leaves me no other option than to make sure I cover the subject intensively. point taken and I will try to use a variety of images to match from. Thanks for the feedback and good luck with everything.

Hey ebal studios, thanks for you tutorials. They are very good. I have two questions. 1. I know of the different smoothing groups in 3ds max but I currently use meshsmooth because it does the same thing with less polygons and also for some reason it moves alot quicker than turbo smooth and opensubdiv. Is it bad that I'm using meshsmooth? 2. I noticed you said that you're going upload a car tutorial can you include doing a high quality interior by any chance? Thanks :)
@Aliismail3D7 жыл бұрын
Hi Brandon, 1.Turbosmooth is an improved minimized version of meshsmooth, from autodesk manual: The differences between the two are as follows: TurboSmooth is considerably faster and more memory-efficient than MeshSmooth. TurboSmooth also has an option for Explicit Normals, unavailable in MeshSmooth. See Explicit Normals. TurboSmooth provides a limited subset of MeshSmooth functionality. In particular, TurboSmooth uses a single smoothing method (NURMS), can be applied only to an entire object, has no sub-object levels, and outputs a triangle-mesh object. I am really not sure if meshsmooth generates any different polycount, as far as I know each subdivision iteration in meshsmooth, turbosmooth and opensubdiv will make the exact number of polygons, you can test this with a simple plane or cube and please feel free to share the results. What's important is the result, use whatever gives you the best results in the shortest time. Also understanding the fundamentals of catmul clark subdivision can really help give you a solid a foundation 2.Yes , the tutorial will eventually be finished :) but we just get caught up with projects at the studio then it gets postponed, the priority is the exterior but maybe we can do at least some part of the interior or to show the basics of modeling it, usually interiors can take a lot of time to model because there is just so much details and maybe it will take too long to follow. Godd luck with everything Brandon and all the best, Ali
@bdon99k97 жыл бұрын
+Ebal Studios I already tested it, and I have been using meshsmooth since I found out that it generates the same results using less polycount and vertices and also that it isn't very laggy, so i guess I'll stick with it. I just wanted information on it. Thanks alot! :)

Good intro video! I hope you know what mean Ebal in Russian. Generally speaking, it means "that word", just google it.
@Aliismail3D5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, for clarification, the way our studio is translated into Russian should be: Айбаль студии, Ebal Mountain is Айбаль гора. The pronunciation similarity of Ebal as ебал was unintended and we wouldn't have done it if we knew Russian language when we picked our name back in 2008. That being said we don't plan to change our studio name, because it does not seem to affect our sales or services and if anything it seems to always spark an entertaining debate among the Russian populations and our website ranking in Russia seems to be disproportionately higher than expected :) We are glad that our studio name have given you guys a good laugh and we wish that all of your days are filled with happiness and laughter.
