I've actually used this in my military service in 2001 in the Macedonian army. All republics after Yugoslavia break apart continued to use this gear for a number of years. A few months ago I bought the same kit, and I am using it on my outdoor trips. This is made to last for many years.

I love millitary mess kits. I was born in 53, and in my neighborhood there was a whole lot of boys. We played army all the time. Whenever I use a mess kit I think of how much fun we had as kids.

I was a food service specialist in the Marines and I came across a Chek. field mess kit that was platoon size and it all fit nicely in a metal case with cutting board ,knives, sharpening stone and all of the utensils where there and fit nicely into a canvas back pack from world war 2. You can't go wrong with these kits just throw in some oil, soap, rags, matches and salt,pepper,etc and your ready for anything.

I am fascinated with all that fancy alcohol burners ! Last time in uniform , during NATO ride 1999. we improvise burner with medical alcohol and simple lid from a jar ! Ok, does not last long , but lid you can find anywhere !

It was probably used mainly in a chow line through a field kitchen, so you have two containers to have food served into, with cooking in the pot a secondary use.

You are right. This is the reason why all this surplus is in good condition . Was used just when inevitable . Even on march, filed kitchen try to organize regular plates and cups . This kit is designed for war use , and, since YU army was successor of famous Titos partisans , design is for such use . And , since modern hikers are campers are sort of partisans , this kit fits perfectly !

First review that I've seen on this kit, so thanks. Noticed it some years ago, but went with the Swiss Volcano Stove for $12 and change, back then. Still will prefer to keep the Swiss kit in my OSB, but it's way more expensive now (if you can find it), so this could be a good option for an extra ... or gifts.

@@Iridium242 I love the fact that it can carry water, and burn sticks to heat stuff up. It doesn't hurt that it fits into one of the outside pockets on my medium ALICE. I made a "Hobo Stove," to fit in it, so I have some burn time ... yeah. 😉

I have the Alocs alcohol stand that looks like your stand, and I use a small grill or the Evernew cross stands to help smaller/odd shaped pots to rest on the stand without falling over. I have thought about buying the Yugoslav mess kit.
