@@MaxMiller94 What it really feels like: Company is leveraging NOT hardware gains to sell future generations of graphics cards. Open GL cards, if you will. I have a GTX 980 on my wall, mounted as an art piece. I can pop it in my machine right now, load up any game I currently play, and aside from titles that force settings limits due to Vram limits (which tend to get overridden anyway), games will play about the same as on my 3060 with 12gb ram. That is to say: most everything will stay locked above 60 FPS, even on high/ultra settings, without fancy software features. I think people need to recognize 'what is good hardware performance' vs 'what is being generated by software' and stop supporting efforts to maximize performance through software. That's a driver thing. You make drivers better, things get more efficient. The side effect of this is that any generation of game that came before is likely going to run the same/worse when they can't benefit from software features they weren't designed to benefit from. Imagine 45 fps max in Crysis on a 5090.

The AI part of the GPU has been massively upgraded to help with the generation of those extra frames. As some people have spotted while seeing DLSS4 in action, it's not great. Nvidia were essentially just counting the number of frames in a game and comparing those between the GPUs. It's VERY misleading of course and has most people talking about it.

There is a niche market that may start to see a boom this year with the TB5 introduction. Instead of getting a big, heavy, loud, scorching and battery hog gaming laptop with the Intel H CPUs supporting the discrete TB5 some may see a nice option to jump in the light, smaller, quieter, cooler and battery efficient laptops without dGPUs in combination with a future supported TB5 eGPU dock with a more powerful desktop GPU. This more portable approach is somewhat desired by many as kind of a single efficient solution replacement to the typical small non gaming laptop and a desktop gaming stationary combo. I completely disagree with the intel vs amd assessment. The idea that "People don't associate AMD with high end" is a joke. This has not been true for gamers since the launch of the 5800x3d. Intel has since become the poster child for bluescreen corner cutting garbage
@HardwareCanucks6 күн бұрын
You seem to assume that the people who are shopping for gaming laptops at places like Best Buy, Costco, etc. have enough brand awareness to make that distinction. The lion's share don't.
@AirzGamingTTV6 күн бұрын
@HardwareCanucks the comment here saying consumers lack brand awareness contradicts your whole #1 statement at 10:07 that I was referring to. My point is your statement that "AMD is not in the consumer lexicon as ultra high end" is baseless with no supporting evidence. If anything AMD's growth in marketshare and Intels plummeting stock price says otherwise.

If Nvidia went all in on DLSS4 to justify the 5000 series, is it worthwhile for us 4000 series to buy the Lossless Scaling utility from Steam to prolong the life of GPU? It has 4x frame gen too, doesnt it?
@xXDeiviDXx7 күн бұрын
Yes it's absolutely worth it due to the universal nature of the app which means you can use it on ANY game and even on movies and KZbin videos, also tomorrow the app will be updated with LSFG 3.0 which will improve the quality of frame generation by a lot (but don't expect similar quality or latency to DLSS frame gen).
@shadik19987 күн бұрын
Frame gen is fake frames, you barely need the dlss3 version with one fake frame, let alone 75% fake frames in DLSS4 that do not react to the player's input.

It kind of sucks that next to no laptops are getting TB5, for example, Asus' new Flow doesn't have TB5 nor the older connector. Asus should have made the new XG Mobile with both the older connector and a TB5 connector (make it 2 cables or a swappable thing), because it will get bottlenecked by TB4 and USB4 (even though they say it works).

I have a laptop with Iris Xe integrated graphics. Since I'm not coming from a previous Nvidia RTX chip, would it be more prudent for me to use the 5070ti or 5080 as the next step vs. going with the Nvidia RTX 40 series? My understanding is that if you already have a 40 series, you don't have much impetus to jump to the 50 series, but if you have something less powerful than the 40 series, going to the 50 series is a good step. Is that understanding correct?
@wolfstorm53945 күн бұрын
Willing to bet the 5080 and 5090 will perform about the same as the 4090, unless they somehow got them drawing more than 175W, only difference will be the faster tensor cores needed for multi frame gen and the extra VRAM on the 5090 for when it matters. edit: i faking called it, lol i made that assumption before reaching the part of the video where he brings up the power draw, and sure enough 175W is the cap again, only frame gen will save the day, the 50 series might be the worse lineup in a while

people have to note out that the RTX 5080 laptop has less 26.7% of cuda cores than the rtx 4090 laptop, plus the additonal GDDR7. The 5080 laptop are able to outperform the 4090 Laptop performance in recent leaks by a margin. So with 5070 laptop having the same cuda count and GDDR7 boost, it could be very well. One thing that's certain is the limitation of VRAM. It should've been at least 10 for it. However I can only buy 5050 or 5060 ;c
@FromSoftwareStan7 күн бұрын
With gaming laptops i usually buy a generation behind and save a few hundred dollars. I have a rtx 3070 laptop from Alienware that I bought for 1k. This might be the first generation where I buy a laptop that has the current GPU series in it. That 8gb of vram is the most puzzling thing for me on the 5070 as that will just cripple whatever work they have put into the gpu forcing you to use dlss4 and upscale to overcome that. I don't get why they just don't include more vram unless it really is just about upselling the top end of the 50 series. It certainly isn't a cost cutting measure maybe prices would increase 50$ with 12gb of vram instead of 8 but that's probably about it

Good stuff HC, one quibble though. For some reason, probably Nvidia marketing working its way into everyone’s brains, the 50 series keeps being compared to the NON-Super 40 series. That’s fine on the xx80 and xx90 series products, but the Super variants of the 5070 and Ti were significant upgrades over the original 40 series releases. Rtx 5070 and Ti CUDA cores etc should be compared against the Super cards, not the weaker parts that offered poor value versus their 30 series counterparts.

geniune question here, what is the purpose of these gaming laptops if they cannot be powered say in a car or airplane? it takes a LOT of power to power these gaming laptops. the most you will have is around an hour or so of gaming without being plugged in, and try charging them in a vehicle or airplane or train as far as i know you just cannot. i mean why buy laptops for mobility reasons when you cannot be completely mobile? sure you can use them in building infrastructures such as hospitals, hotels, schools, coffee shops and maybe a far away relatives home, but is it worth it to spend thousands of dollars for that when you can get a gaming desktop which will out perform these semi portable gaming laptops?

It is fraud, and yes, confusing to say the least. Porsche can't make two completely different engines, with one being significantly more powerful than the other, and give them the same name and sell the less powerful one using the same name in a different car, but somehow Nvidia is allowed to do this, because... well, I'm not exactly sure why, but it's clearly related to rich companies having an easier time getting away with breaking the law in some industries. The auto industry is more tightly regulated for whatever reasons.
