Hardwood Propagation of Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae (Part 1) | Rooting Cuttings for a Privacy Hedge

Took my first cuttings less than 3 weeks ago, dipped them in root hormone, stuck them, then put them on heat for 2 weeks. Been off the heat for a week, placed next to my sliding glass door (indirect light) pulled 1 cutting today and already have small roots. Now I just need to be patient until winter to pot them up 😉Thanks so much for the videos

I plant cuttings of this (pine trees, cedar trees, etc) just beside my vegetable garden without any aid of rooting hormones or whatever and its fine growing well. I just water it from time to time (preventing the soil to get dry). I did this two months ago to make it as a fence because my area is very open and when strong winds batter, everything will fall.

I was trying to find my comment I made years ago to give you an update on my hinoki cypress cuttings. Well, I took three cutting and tried your method. They all took but through fault of my own, only one survived. It’s a good thing I even got one since my original bush gotten eaten up by a rabbit during the winter. 😢 So luckily I have ave this little one to hold on to.

Mike this was an excellent video for learning how to propagate trees! The fastest growing tree in my backyard is the huge willow tree. It provides so much shade in the hot summer weather here. In downtown Sacramento there are so many huge treelined streets. And some old victorian mansion’s which many of them have been turned into either duplexes or studios. Keep up the great work! 👍

@@Idkimjustwatchingyt It was weird, half lived through the winter but when I went to replant them there were no roots to speak of ...so I'd call it a failure. Would probably be best to use cuttings in the summer when the fresh growth is really pushing out of the donor bushes.

@@maehay4065 I agree on the "beautiful" part, but I want to have nothing to do with maples. A big part of that is they're not well suited to the weather extremes where I live in Oklahoma. They break frequently in our more violent storms and are prone to dying back due to harsh late and early freezes - freezing the poor tree when it's full green and not ready for cold. Plus with their helicopter seeds, I wind up with gobs of little maple trees growing in my rain gutters every year :|

Nice job, but seen savy farmer did hardwood cuttings in winter. No hormones, watered in and let set all winter, watering as needed. Grew all year, then pulled out and potted with great results. No bottom heat either. Just shaded area

Hi. You do not need to be so picky with this variety. I trim a tree and just push the 10-12 inches tips in the ground and got about 80%-90% rooted. After 2 years I just remove them from the original location and replanted them. It was mostly a shade area, and we have plenty rain during the year. I did poor a little water during the Summer months when did not rain for over a week. That was it.

It might be. You'll want to get older material from last year and cut the new growth off. No guarantees but I've never tried this.

Potting question? When you fill a tub with multiple cuttings you save a lot of space & money by not using individual pots. After filling a tub full of cuttings when do you decide to transplant into individual pots? Can you skip the individual potting & grow out the cuttings out in the big tubs, then transplant directly into the ground? Thanks For Your Time: Shawn

Yes, you can plant them directly out in soil. I like to re-pot them the following winter while they're dormant and I have some videos about that if you search the channel. I'll probably make another follow up to this little series this winter and show the process again.

I start with the slow release fertilizer the following spring when I pot up the rooted cuttings. I don't typically fertilize at all during the summer that they're rooting.

had twenty of these that started as cuttings and were about two feet tall when I planted them in the spring. They grew really well all summer long and once winter hit they died.I figured they would be hearty enough, I'm in 5b but I guess I was wrong.

Hard to say why without knowing all the conditions but they're rated for zone's 5 to 7, which is much colder than my area.

For my job I inspect vacant houses. A lot of times I think about taking cuttings from some of the plants. If I'm in the middle of a 10-hour shift how long do I have with a couple branches in my car?

1. The best time is in the early spring, right before the trees break dormancy. 2. The temperature around the roots just needs to be about 10 degrees F. warmer than the ambient air. 3. I don't use a lid for hardwood cuttings like these, so the humidity is the same as the outside air.

I just got a survey completed to clear up a property line dispute. Turns out, my property line is further out then even I expected! Goes without saying, my neighbor REALLY disputes the line now. I've got 75 potted thujas (and a couple nellie stevens) ready to go into the ground. We're hoping that in a few years, we'll be blessed with a giant wall of green to block out the fact that we have neighbors a quarter mile away that still find a way to give us a headache 😄

Recently I was told 80cm will prove to be problematic when they get bigger. Don't know about that. But I know that in my country they don't do too well in warmer cities

Does the green giant require a lot of TLC and watering the first few years or could they be planted in agriculture farm land in wide open sun and just let the rain take care of it?

Depends on how much rain you get through the summer. They are tough little plants and I had mine in pots in about 50% sun this past summer. They did well but we watered them at lease once a week. Any young little liner plant will need a little TLC until it gets going.

Just set them on the back porch and protect from wind and rain. Keep the cuttings slightly moist through the winter and pot them up in the spring.

They'll root without bottom heat. Just follow these steps.

No, I wouldn't consider doing that. No reason to. If you stick the cuttings early on, before new growth emerges, they'll root just fine. Once rooted and potted up, you can then prune the tops if you want to encourage root growth.

Trying to find a video of someone propagating Blue Atlas Cedar cuttings. This is the closest video I’ve found. You think it can be done? I’ll have to ask to get some cuttings but I don’t think it will be a problem. You think Spring is a good time to do this? I’ve propagated my mothers hydrangea. For several years now. But I’d like to spread my root hormone around more since 8m retired now. Maybe even make me a few extra bucks! Any suggestions?

I like to take any conifer trees like that in the early spring before the new growth starts. I've actually got a weeping atlas cedar but have never tried to propagate it. Maybe I'll give it a try and see if I can be successful with it.

I use the same fertilizer that I use for my rhododendrons, a slow release granular fertilizer made by Apex. It's their cool weather formula.

There is no thermostat on this. I just turn it on and then adjust the temp by raising or lowering the mat. It would be very helpful to have a thermostat though. If you have one then set it for about 80 degrees F.

I don't water cuttings. I just make sure the medium is moist and that it maintains a low level of moisture throughout the rooting process. I suppose you could use a spray bottle for watering them.

Mike, I’m fixing to plant a lot of pear; peach; and apple tree hardwood cuttings. Do you think it’s important to scrape or cut the bottom of the cuttings to help aid in making roots? Or just leave them with a straight across cut off and dip them in hormone and then just set in sand and put on bottom heat for a while? Thanks so much for all the info you e taught me so far!!

I don't think that how you cut the bottom is critical. They'll root either way. You can cut at a 45 degree angle to get more cambium involved. I usually only shave bark off when dealing with semi-hardwood cuttings.

The cuttings are thicker and more full because I keep a steady supply of water to them. The ones out in the landscape are filling in more as they grow. Johnny has been replaced by a new rooster, Henry!

Are they brown and dead or just have the natural winter bronzing? If dead then you might as well remove them. If it's just bronzing then I'd leave them. I don't have enough experience with these trees yet to know if new branches will grow back from the trunk of large trees but I do know they like to grow from just about any wood on them while they're young. I had a buck rub one to death with his antlers 2 falls ago and last summer it started sprouting new growth from every spot it could that was still alive.

After researching, it looks like a problem in your area. I've never seen them here before. From what I've read, they have to be sprayed by pesticides at a particular time in the bugs life cycle.

They are rated zone 5 to 7 so I don't think you'll have a problem. If you buy them as small rooted cuttings then you may want to pot them into 1 gallon containers and protect them the first year while they get established and plant out the following spring so they have all summer to grow.

On the chance you'll see this comment/question 3 years later, how did you choose Green Giant over Emerald Green to propagate for your area? I was looking for a wholesale outlet for Green Giants when I heard about Emerald Green and because I'm in the Black Hills of South Dakota, zone 5 with zone 4's around me, I'm thinking that perhaps I should be going with the Emerald Green... But all the videos I'm seeing are Green Giant. Are they that much easier to grow? What differences will I find going with the Emerald Green? And if anybody knows of a wholesale nursery with the Emerald Greens, please let me know... I'm not finding it.

Emerald greens are like candy to deer. They destroy them. They don't eat the Green Giants though, and I wanted bigger and broader trees than the Emerald Green Arborvitae can provide.

I don't recommend bringing them indoors but you may have luck with it. If you do try that, I'd love to hear how they turn out.

I think your success is conditioned by your heating pad, right?

Yes, the heating pad helps a great deal. You can root them without bottom heat but it goes much faster and with a higher success rate with the heat.

No mushroom compost for cuttings. It would work for potting soil but cuttings need an inert material. You don't want to encourage bacteria and fungal growth around fresh cuttings.

Mike Kincaid I have a question do you live near water hyacinth? Scientific name Eichhornia Crassipes. They are a water plant that lives in lakes ponds or any water way? If you do can you send some seeds to me because I know how to make rooting hormone I will give to you for free. Never tried it but my friend has and said it works great.

Don't worry I will grow them in buckets in my house and I don't live near water I live in the city. I will cut the flowers off and propagate only with the daughter plants.
