Free Easy Fix To Make Hydraulic Log Splitter Split Faster!

How to adjust your commercial log splitter so it splits faster! In this video I’ll show you how I adjust the 2 stage hydraulic pump settings on my All Wood Muscle Wood and Eastonmade 12-22 log splitters. This is a simple maintenance adjustment that I have done myself after getting instructions from both Bobby at All Wood and Andrew at Eastonmade. I am sure this method will apply to other machines as well such as Wolfe Ridge, Timber Wolf, and others. If your machines cycle time slows way down while splitting wood, you have to watch this video!

Good job on this video Heath. That adjustment is the unloading valve. Trying to run too much flow at high pressure kills the engine. Unloading that high volume gear set allows it to build pressure without stalling. Wolfe Ridge machines have the adjustment in the same location as the EM, and they are fully tightened and then set 1.5 turns out CCW at my shop... Just so you Wolfe Ridge guys have a good base line. Just make sure not to set this adjustment too high as it can cause damage to the engine long term.

good video years ago my dad had me turn up the pressure on a industial tractor loader and hoses started blowing out so i had to turn it back down i think it only had single stage pump. just be careful turning up pressure. Rachel yous good in saw dust. take care, be safe and well.

Yeah, that could be dangerous for sure. This doesn’t change the pressure, just changes the pressure that it switches to stage 2. If you set it too high it will simply stall your motor in stage one before kicking to stage 2.

I just have a regular "Ma and Pa" Speeco splitter. My wife and I (if we're together) can split a full (3 stoves) cord in about 3-4 hours. Usually all gnarly Oak and Elm. LOL. Always knew the valves could be adjusted but never had it explained. I've got a hell of a lot of hours on it but it seems to "shift gears" appropriately. But still nice to know. The cycle rates on my kind of machine are painfully slow particularly after watching all of these challenge videos and seeing the "pricey" machines you all run. Its a lot more work and time with my machine but I'm getting older and only "process" wood for myself. I wear out so fast these days, I think I'm finally catching up to the speed of my machine.....meaning, I slowed down enough for us to work in simpatico together. LOL, Love the videos and the challenges particularly. It's great to see good 'ol family content of couples working together to accomplish a shared goal. Its so much better than the lives most of us lead.......going our separate ways to work each day to meet up at the end of the day, too tired, ornery, or busy to show each other appreciation. It's wonderful to see the two of you literally and figuratively working together and enjoying each other. Give Thanks, because (yes ya gotta work at it, but) it's a Gift. Thanks.

You are going to love it. On other thing I had to adjust was the autocycle kick out pressure as that had loosened up over time as well. If it kicks back too easy it may need to be adjusted. This is pretty simple as well.

Yes they do have one. I just went through the process a couple weeks ago and can’t find the video I watched that explained the process. There’s nothing wrong with all my pump is adjusted. But the hoses absolutely suck based off of size.

Now with the pressure gauge in it, I realize I do not have to adjust the pump. My transfer pressure is 800 psi in my deadhead pressure is 3600 psi.

Thank you, I am not sure about measuring the tonnage. I’d imagine you’d need some type of machine to actually measure the force. Other than that you could probably use match with the inline pressure gauge to calculate what it should be.

Can you tell me what the thing is behind touching the tip of the saw blade after each time you make a cut? I have never seen this done before and i watch "a lot" of bucking billy ray, lol.

I have a firewood pro sizer. It is a small laser that attaches to the handle of the saw. I touch the tip of the saw to the log so the laser is at the same point every time. This helps me get perfectly uniform cuts. If you look closely you can see the green laser dot hit the log when I do this.

Lil off topic question if you don’t mind. Have you noticed a difference in rpm of all your splitters you have tested. Not splitting rpm just at operation rpm not splitting. And do you have idea how high the norm is?

I did put a tachometer on the Eastonmade 12-22 and on my buddies Wolfe Ridge Pro28C when we were comparing them and they were very close. However I don’t remember what rpm they were running at. I can check next time I run the 12-22.

Well my old Huskee 22ton was in need of a new engine after 20yrs the old B.Stratton 650 was falling apart.. upgrade to a Harbor Freight 212cc Predator engine and a 16gpm pump and 3/4 NPT fittings and we should be splitting alot faster once I get everything mounted in

I really like it. It does have its drawbacks, needs to be charged, if you swap saws you either need more of them or re install, etc. but when it fits it’s a huge time and work saver.

This is Jon edwards. Not sure why it doesn’t show the right name. It’s the low pressure transfer pressure. I sent you an email about this the other week with pictures and a link to a flow diagram I have basically a county line 25-ton box store like you do. For me, I wanted a pressure gauge on my high pressure hose. My transfer pressure is rated for 400-900 psi. The pump setting is at 800 psi. I got a similar benefit just by changing the high pressure hose from 1/2” to 3/4” between the pump and the directional control valve. When you look at the flow chart, 1/2” is at the edge for being too small. It would be much better with at least a 5/8” hose. So there are several items that could contribute to this

Gear pumps like 1200 rpm, engines like 3600 rpm. The new splitters us double pumps with a crossover valve set at ?. The small pump can run for a short time at 4000 psi (would you believe it?) a GEAR PUMP with a directional valve and cylinder is a very efficient system. Often in the past a single gear pump was connected by V belt to a jack shaft with a 3;1 ratio. Oil does not like to move fast especially when cold. The new splitters have a double pump that is much smaller and can be rated at 4000 psi for a short time. However it still must slow down when the jaws close on the wood or hit a knot. My 30 year old splitter has a jack shaft and a 2 inch gear pump (probably of a Case Back Hoe) It also has a 5"x 36" CAT cylinder. i have re plumbed to add a filter get rid of the water pipe fittings. It has a Ford solid axle with 15 inch tires. It tows good, if you remember to extend the cylinder and put weight on the tongue. For 3 foot rounds I can put the tongue on the ground and roll the rounds into the jaws. I sit on a padded round and use my shoulders and knees for the work. I roll the rounds or put them in a double wheeled wheelbarrow downhill into the barn. As I split I have shelves on either side of the wedge so I can just throw the keepers into a loose pile in the corner. Right now the corner is 12x 20x 4 feet high. If I had a lot of money, I still would not have a tractor or side by side or pickup involved. I got a new Duromax with electric start and I really like it. At 88 I need my exercise but do not want to over tire myself. I was a Sales Engineer for Vickers and TRW ROSS. My territory was Rocky Mountains West, I travelled with my skis in winter in flyrod in summer. Its been a good life. Iguana Ps Get Smart, Get Trump

Seconds add up to minutes, minutes to hours, hours to days. It is a simple adjustment that takes 2 minutes and costs nothing. I’d say it’s worth it.

If you turn it too much the engine will sputter and stall while splitting a really tough round.

ok so your saving 3 or 4 sec per round if you split 100 rounds in a session, you saved 400 sec 6 1/2 min no big deal

The adjustment takes 2 minutes and costs nothing. With these machines we can get easily split 1/3rd of a cord in 10 minutes which we sell for $150. So in you example we could easily split an extra $75 worth of wood per session. I’d say it’s well worth making the adjustment.
