Trows are apparently creatures in Shetland and Orkney mythology that inhabit the rolling hills there. They’re also very found of fiddle music and will frequently lure musicians into their underground lairs to spend an extremely long time there (though apparently to the person it only feels like a single night has passed). I bring this up because I feel like having a concept album about a country fiddler being lured underground by these creatures would make for a much better album than this crap.

That walmart comment at the end is actually super sad and true. I met my gf online and turns out she lives like 40 minutes from me in a small town. I went to visit her and it's very rural. It's full of lovely people but you can tell that a lot of people are struggling economically. To sing about about a store which is just taking advantage of your economic position is so sad and you can tell that Hardy doesn't realize that and that's just as sad. Not saying I have it a lot better or whatever, but we all deserve better and rural folk are sadly fooled thinking walmart and stores like them are saviors because things cost a couple of dollars less, making these corporations richer while not actually helping the community in any other way.

@@Gotttlobbb if you try to set up a grocery story in a small town and a walmart opens up next to you, you are screwed. At least with a small shop, some that money circulating goes to the community, but with walmart, all that money goes to the pockets of the owners and the shareholders. Yeah, things might look cheaper, but the money that could be improving your small town is being spent on tomatoes that are more than likely not grown in the farm down the road. also, the fact that a walmart is "needed" to make things more affordable for people in economic struggle is gross and takes advantage of that struggle. Why not focus on improving the economic life of these people who also need money for medicine and rent? Nah, just open a walmart next to them and sell things cheaper instead of helping them at the core of their issues. Walmart is not the only problem here, it's being poor.
@Gotttlobbb Жыл бұрын
@@TheeDeeM I don't know how it works in the US, but wouldn't a Walmart in a small town employ way more people than a small grocery store? As someone who grew up in a small town it sickens me that country music has reduced itself to glorifying alcoholism, sexual objectification and a simple minded lifestyle (dirt road, truck, boat, lake, beer) that doesn’t show a deeper understanding of these situations or any real passion for anybody in particular that they would be singing these songs to. It’s like a checklist of lyrics, chords, drum machine, twang, wash, rinse, repeat. 9 times out of 10 these songs are literally about nobody.

I think in a weird way it's almost brilliant because it reflects both the artist and the culture he's talking about in a spiral of decline and self destruction. With no future and a determination to stay stuck, in the context of mainstream country music what passes as edgy, in this case hard rock sounds based in 25 year old music, or formula to pay the bills just come off as tired and Hardy is aware of that. The here lies country music song flirts with that idea before the lazy, it was all a dream, reveal. I think a true working class solidarity and what we're seeing in hip hop with a wide range of subjects, genres being embraced and slow but steady push back on some of it's more reactionary elements as its base grows are my hope in what pushes the way forward.

@Jessie "You’d probably have to have NO country artists in or around the top 10" That's literally every country except America right now. If country is so great, name a British Country band, name a Brazilian Country Band without looking it up. The genre is dead the second you leave the border. Compared to the influence it once had with Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan and to other genres of music that's still alive in other countries. Rap use to be in that same boat, especially in the UK, but thanks to amazing artists like LIttle Simz and Slowthai the UK Rap scene is thriving. Country has made zero attempt to globalize. Which is pretty dumb, we both speak the same language, we both have uneducated Rural hicks, Lorry/truck drivers aplenty, both of us have alcoholic/gambling low lives. Hahha I love this album. It's not perfect, but I don't view it pandering at all. I feel like a lot of the commenters are projecting some country stigma onto it. Back when I lived in New York, I used to think that references in country music like the Walmart thing (or the aspirational Yeti cooler in "Buy Me A Boat") were purely pandering-greedy corporations gaslighting the poor Southerners into these fake emblems of Southern culture. I think as I actually got to know people in the country community, I dropped a lot of my cynicism. People really DO shop at WalMart for everything. They DO want a Yeti. We can argue all day about whether that should be the case, but I think songs like those present life as it is for so many, rather than some idealized version that I had in my head. (At least that's how I've changed as a listener.) Anyway, just my two cents! I find the whole idea of Hardy being both a mockingbird and a crow so fascinating, but I get we all hear stuff differently.

Shout outs to some of my favorites: Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, Margo Price, Shovels and Rope, Steve Earle, Lucero, Justin Townes Earle, Old 97s, Murder By Death, Jason Isbell, Neko Case, Wilco, Sun Volt, Drive By Truckers, Tyler Childers, Adeem The Artist, Shakey Graves, Esme Paterson, Langhorne Slim, Colter Wall. Thank you for articulating this into words that I couldn’t. My issue with modern country music isn’t the music itself, it’s that so many other artists are getting overlooked and what’s being consumed and popularized is the lowest common denominator and the bare minimum-which I suppose is the same with any other genre as well. But as someone who grew up in the southern United States, it’s frustrating that what gets played is nearly all “big pickup trucks, guy meets girl, goin on dates at Applebees” because it makes the whole culture look that way

Don’t listen to Fantano he doesn’t know country music there’s a lot better people out there my boy
@lucyw4195 Жыл бұрын
If you like Fantano's taste, I'd say maybe check out 12 Stories by Brandy Clark, Car Wheels On A Gravel Road by Lucinda Williams, The Horses and the Hounds by James McMurtry. All those are the folkier side of country, heavy on the lyricism/storytelling, I feel like Fantano probably likes them if he's heard them.

fantano knows very little about country as a genre and culture. for some critics that know what they're on about in the genre, id recommend Grady Smith primarily (popular and high-quality videos) as well as Overshore and Cyrus Waugh. they all have a better understanding of the genre and culture surrounding it and generally all three have a good balance of mainstream and independent music

Maybe this dude is using Walmart like a hip hop song would use like, Rosecrans Avenue. Like "Walmart is my turf." You better not step to this dude, he's seen some stuff in that Subway line.

"The mockingmelon and the crow" - NOT GOOD

I work at the Texas Roadhouse, and based on your descriptions, I wouldn't be surprised to hear some of these songs played on the radio there. The thing I wish people would understand is that it's not country, it's just pop music with a southern accent. When I learned that distinction, I learned to stop hating country, and it's since become one of my favorite genres of music.
@silversoulken Жыл бұрын
I used to work at one for 4 years altogether and I guarantee they would have it on the jukebox.
@AlexKawa20 Жыл бұрын
@@silversoulken A couple weeks ago, I heard the song "Down at the Twist and Shout" while at work, and I was thinking, "wow, this actually sounds country. I like it!" And then, it was right back to the same old junk. So fitting that this happened on a 50-degree day in the middle of January, because just like you cherish it when you get a warm day in the middle of winter, you do the same when you hear a good song at the Texas Roadhouse, because you know it ain't gonna last.

Him not knowing that is just ignorance. Doesn't make the album any better though. Awful record
@turtles10 Жыл бұрын
@@corycosta1818 it shows his ignorance in understanding the culture he's trying to white knight for. he shouldnt be reviewing this album if hes not willing to learn the tiniest bit about rural southern culture or listen to anyone he claims that hardy is misrepresenting. this album is garbage, but this review is somehow worse
@corycosta1818 Жыл бұрын
@@turtles10 I agree that he's ignorant to what it is. All I said is that it had no bearing on how awful this album was. He could have no understanding of any gun and it wouldn't change anything. There are plenty of country albums and artists that he hasn't enjoyed and loved over the years. So I don't really buy the second part of your comment. I just think this is a scenario where he doesn't know anything about guns.
