Great video! I'm doing the same north of Cincinnati. I bought $9 three-inch seedlings (trachycarpus fortunae) and covered them when below 20 degrees. I spray the apex with copper fungicide in fall before covering, and uncover whenever possible. My covers are 5-gallon clear buckets. Once they're 5 years, no more winter protection. I have some 6' needle palms (rhapidophylum hystrix) that I did the same beginning in 2004. They bloom and seed every summer.

I’m in NJ, zone 7B, and your video is encouraging me to give the windmills a shot

Windmills should do great in 7b! In the mid Atlantic, try the "Bulgaria" or "Taylor form" varieties. They re more resistant to sudden freezes and frosts.

7b is perfectly fine just protect the trunk in the winter from the cold winds. Uncover in the spring. 🌴

nj 7b here too. did you ever get a windmill palm? since this 4 years ago i’m assuming you’re by the shore and now you’ve been upgraded to zone 8a! i just bought 2 windmills to higher my chances of one surviving. hoping one is more hardy than the other but maybe both are very hardy

Great video 😄 and also I saw you grew these in PA and I just planted my 3 gallon windmill palm in my front yard. I live in Pittsburgh so our winters are a bit harsher so I may need more than just an old towel lol. Also remember that even tho it’s cold hardy an extended cold day at 25 degrees could be just as harmful to the palm as subzero temp’s. I hope your palm is still thriving this video gave me some hope 😊

it's a pity that Poland is a cold country, but you have to manage somehow. You have wonderful plants, I envy you. In winter I have to heat the plants so that they survive.

Why don't you build a greenhouse?

What kind of soil do you have them in? They seem to be growing very well!

The Windmills are still alive! They got beat up last winter (2022) but they have rebounded. Stay tuned for another update

Looking great! I'm pretty certain that there is som hybridization going on with the trachys, the leaflets look so much neater than regular fortunei. Do they have tomentum around the growth point?
@monaabdat12962 жыл бұрын
Is the palm will be only males?
@TheRealKitWalker3 жыл бұрын
I'm in the tropical countries and the ones I planted are no where near the growth your seedlings have shown. But also, they didn't shed leaves, they stayed green all throughout.
@johnoriley63924 жыл бұрын
I believe those palm trees will grow much farther.
