there is a crowd to love every sort of person. you apparently find him witty. I think he rakes up an issue for fuck's sake. I am an Indian and the Simpsons has been my favorite show for years. I enjoyed watching Apu. I also find it hillarious when people imitate the Indian accent and exaggerate our mannerisms. Just as we do the same for other races and even people in our country of other regions. There is this class of people who have started whining at things that's getting annoying. And no. He would have been bullied in Indian schools for this " wit ".

@@tinamoul Yeah but every character is satire none of them represent the whole of the group they’re a part of, and Apu had several episodes where they tried to show his humanity and the difficulties of certain situations an Indian immigrant might face, the episode about xenophobia and immigration the episode about the expectation he had to marry his arranged bride manjula. Like I understand caricatures misrepresent groups and ideally you have character driven comedy but he had character development alongside numerous stereotypical jokes just like most characters on the show.

The group-victimhood ideology (neo-Marxism) has added a postmodern twist so what they say no longer needs to make sense or follow a rational template. If someone's feelings are hurt everyone has to bend over backwards to kiss them better. (Actually, there's a tie-in to overly-feminine raising of children as well. For the past few generations there has been an increasing coddling of children's emotional state (often by the mother) unto the child never developing adult competency unto the management/regulation of their own emotions. That is why professing "adults" in Universities and colleges are calling upon administration to try to stop the whole world from saying things that might cause negative emotions to rise in them that they then need some "mommy-figure" to come and manage for them. It's the onus for the horrendous Canadian "Human Rights Commission" and Bill C-16. The tie-in to Marxism is that eventually all "adult decisions" are ceded to a authoritative State/Overseer.

MilkCap I understand where he's coming from, but I don't think anyone who lived in the real world AND watched the Simpsons ever believed Apu was a representation of all southeast asians. Just because Apu wasn't a nuclear physicist on the Simpsons doesn't mean his character was racist. And I have absolutely no problem with Hank Azaria providing the voice of Apu. It was a stereotypical Indian immigrant accent, no different IMO than a Southern one, Boston, etc. Apu was one of the invested, more important characters on the Simpsons. He wasn't some marginal guy, and his character was the feature player on many episodes. He was given dignity, grace, wisdom, a social conscience and a sense of humor. He may have appeared to be a caricature, but he was one of the more fully developed characters on the show. I get the feeling this guy is secretly offended when he walks into a convenience store and sees it being run by Indian immigrants who struggle with the language.
@MichaeLangs
@MichaeLangs 5 жыл бұрын
That's a rather glib interpretation of this man's argument. You reply suggests you still fail to see how lack of representation or monolithic representation in these overt caricatures shapes perception in a more subtle way If people are only given access to stereotypes, though a person may recognize a cartoon as a humourous example of the world, without ever critically analyzing the trend, this is taciturn acceptance of whatever message the cartoon portrays. "Not all Indian people are convenience store owners, just all of the ones I have ever seen and care to see" would be an example of this toxic train of thought spelled out When we see those defined as "other" in diverse roles, the zeitgeist more readily accepts real world people into these roles. Media has a profound way of shaping expectation. I agree that Apu is a funny character. I also agree that discussion of portrayal and advocating for diversity is a worthwhile and necessary cause.

"The problem with Apu" "I don't give a shit" (about Apu) "I enjoy Apu. He's a really fun character" ... Make up your mind... Secondly, regarding 3:28 onward, you have a bunch of other - (equally cliched) characters; each more messed up and over-simplified than the next one. Why is Apu - a super-intelligent, ex-MIT student who for some crazy reason became a mwikemart employee bad, while all the other white stereotypes (Homer=fat slob; comic book guy=fat, angry, overly critizing wannabe; Disco-stu; Willie=stereotypical cliched scotsman; etc etc) are ok? Thirdly, while America has seen immigrants from all over the world, for one the vast majority is still white, followed by blacks and latinos (iirc - and to be clear, I'm only talking numerical majority here, not saying anything like race A is better than B or the likes). So why should there be dozens, hundreds, thousands (I don't know what your "ideal" number is since you don't say) of Indians in a show that's set in Matt Groening hometown. Look at those rural, mid-american small towns and you'll probably be able to count all non-whites with two hands. I don't complain that there aren't "enough" white people in "your" Bollywood movies. Fourthly, The Simpsons have been airing since 1989. How is Apu a problem now but wasn't back then? You do know that black face (or brown paint as you keep saying) wasn't a thing anymore in those dark 80s and 90s? Calling Apu a problem is kinda stupid when his character is being handled like every other character in that show. All characters are pardies, every character is a running joke. lastly, brown people weren't allowed to talk until 2003 ... ... really. Please, go tell some afro-american that you have it so bad. I'm sure they'll pity you.

I am Mexican-American. The Simpsons have a Latino character named Pedro Chespirito (a.k.a. The Bumblebee Man). Not once have I ever been offended by this character, because The Simpsons is a show about stereotypes. Stereotypes push comedy to the edge, which is what they should do. I love The Bumblebee Man because of how blatantly racist his character is. The absurd ethnic stereotype kills me because it's so ridiculous. I also don't give a shit that he is voiced by Hank Azaria and not a Latino, because it's a cartoon. How is it that The Simpsons is under fire when South Park and Family Guy have done way worse? As a society, we really need to grow a pair.

answer is not to get rid of apu (even though the simpsons hasn't been good for a long time). he's a lovable character, even if he is a stereotype/caricature/voiced by a white guy. there just needs to be more indian dudes on tv so that the first thing people think of is not apu. additional rant: the simpsons writers also made apu the only male character who consistently does well with the ladies, he's one of the few with a college education, he runs his own business; he is well liked by the community, works extremely hard, blends in with the natives but never gives up and always stands up for his culture and heritage... apu is a badass in a (semi)fictional world where everyone else is some combination of stupid and evil; and 30 years ago he was probably (don't actually know) the most positively portrayed indian dude on american TV one of the things hollywood seems to be most afraid of doing is showing any man from asia getting with white girls, and apu did that shit on the reg (until they married him in the later garbage seasons) apu progressive af

Hari Kondabolu keeps saying "we" talking about people from India, but the truth is that he is born and raised in USA. He is more American than Indian but still considers he owns the truth about an Indian cartoon character despite "real" Indians telling they love the character, that he is the only hard-working character, has a business, a family, is not stupid, is well integrated etc... His only grievance is about being dubbed by an American voice actor and he makes a story from that ? I am French, I think I should start writing "The problem with Pepe le Pew"... Stinky, almost rapist, definitely a full time women harasser PLUS he is dubbed by an American voice actor. That is the last straw that broke the camel's back!!

If you want representation, then make it yourself. It shouldn’t fall to someone else to to represent you. Apu isn’t a minstrel show, he isn’t there purely to be a mockery, he is a character just like ever other. An artist shouldn’t be forced into altering his intentions just for the sake of others, if he chooses to do so organically then fine, but he shouldn’t be forced into it, because then that character will just be a half hearted attempt at pandering.

The principle of politics is to elect someone to represent your political interest in the current government and society. And these people claim that they aren't trying to be politically correct by demanding fictional characters to represent them when that sentiment alone is the very principle of bringing politics to the entertainment industry. It all sums up to one single question, is The Simpsons job to represent you? And in their mind, the answer is "yes" Even though they aren't elected representatives as well, they don't represent the entire Indian community, since there are Indian people who don't find Apu's offensive. What they do is use the mask of representation to pursue their own agenda. People like them claimed they cancel Speedy Gonzalez because it offends Mexicans when in fact in Mexico we love him, they aren't doing this for others, but for themselves. They are the problem, not the solution.

The entire show has characters based on stereotypes. This gives the viewer a "base" to easily throw the characters into humorous situations and general narrative BUT the show itself has always taken the time to dig deeper into its characters. It allows viewers to see that even their cartoon characters are deeper than just the superficial traits. Apu is just a caricature of an Indian but the character has been developed immensely and most of the time he's been used to advocate for diversity and to show the stupidity of racism and xenophobia. It's sad that this controversy will likely shutdown such a progressive show.

Now there are much more representations in media to where Apu is clearly a stereotype. The Simpsons even joked on that. But let’s be real. "Im 35 years old, this cartoons been around for awhile, I got better things to worry about...I don't really give a fuck." Are you kidding me?! AIso, the fact that the voice actor is white is the problem? This guy isnt worth the oxygen he steals.

There are pretty few Indians in the US (compared with other groups). If somebody wants representation of a different kind he should produce his own show.

Alias Anybody No, they must do the show with a ton of caracters from each country abd they have to have a very complex and evolving personality. That's gonna make the best common-place based commedy show!

@Los Brockets He didn’t get rid of Apu, the writers retired the character in 2016, which was before the documentary was made. The writers were confused about the documentary since the problem had already been addressed.
