I used to live with a South Indian family. They would give me food, and I would just sit there wondering how to eat it. They'd look at me and say, "...your...your hands. You use your hands." I have never felt so white in all my existence. The kicker being? I'm an Australian Aboriginal. I'm not even white.

You and I are born and brought up in the West. I speak Gujarati and can understand Hindi, and some Punjabi words. The thing is, they are all closely related languages, whereas Tamil Telegu, etc. are a lot more distantly related. If you think understanding Hindi is hard, you'll probably find South Indian languages impossible. I agree that there is a lot of variation, and also strongly believe that there is a unity to our diversity. BUT, mallus and marathis have less in common than mallus and tams

Depends on the perspective. From MP, Gujarat is Western India. From Chennai, it is the North. Even culturally, Gujarati culture is part of the wider North Indian group. Everything North of the Vindhyas is.

Gujarat is still in the northern half of India, and in a sense can more easily adapt and integrate aspects of Punjabi culture, partly because the languages are similar. Most Gujarati's can speak Hindi. and are able to understand some Punjabi words at the very least. Also, Bollywood often does songs Punjabi-style. I agree with you about the dealing with concepts of being Indian being shoved down our throats, but it is probably worse for South Indians.

I am Tamil, and I agree that the North Indians tend to stereotype South Indians as second class citizens. Just watch Chennai Express. But on the other hand Tamilians tend to be pretty coincided and like to think that they are the source of everything good in the world. It goes both ways. I think a lot of it is related to the idiotic/racist idea that fairer skin is directly proportional to ones' attractiveness.
@hiphopghost18 жыл бұрын
no man. I don't think so. In fact South Indian film Industry is more racist in that manner. Almost every single Tamil movie has a Fair looking Lead actor and Dark and Fat looking Lunga wearing villains

are u from 80's or what didn't u seen any recent tollywood,kollywood,mollywood,sandalwood movies. no villan in real world be like stylist actors. its a movie character that demands the particular type of looking guy. first protect bollywood from selling to pakistanis. learn from south indian film makers who take only indian actors and develop movies with high end tech's

Dhanush, Surya, Vijay, Vijay Sethupathy, Vishnu Vishal, Udhayanidhi Stalin, Sivakarthikeyan, Jai, Atharva, Vishal, Rajinikanth, etc are all dark skinned. And the antagonists in Tamil movies tend to be quite fair skinned actors like Neil Nitin Mukesh (Kaththi), Vidyut Jammwal (Thuppaki), Sonu Sood (Osthi) etc.

On the other hand, I've noticed anecdotally that South Indian "high" culture definitely gets a lot of respect from people all over India, especially among Hindus. For example, the spread of Bharatnatyam as a classical art form throughout India, and the preference of South Indian murthis as art pieces. What Hindu household doesn't have a nataraja, for example?
@hiphopghost18 жыл бұрын
no that's not what North Indians think of South Indians. Rama was dark/brown skinned. Ravana was from Sri Lanka.. Tamilians were beaten by Sinhals over there. Sri Lanka isn't even a Hindu country, they're mostly Buddhists. And South Indian movies portray fair looking people as Protagonist and Darker ones as the villains.

@eugenedebbs21893 жыл бұрын
Some generalisations there. (every south indian family has 1 guy with family in America). That should translate to roughly 40 million South Indian guys in America as the population of South Indians in India is 250 million. The entire population of USA is about 330 million and only about 5 million of them are Indians.

@goddamnthedamned9 жыл бұрын
+julie b Coz he was awesome! I don't know why people would burn the effigy of the man who was ten times smarter than the smartest a man could be. There's a bit at the end when Ravana is dying and he reveals that the reason he kidnapped Sita was because he knew Ram would destroy whoever did such a thing and to die at the hand of god guaranteed realisation to the soul. So he thought why be selfish and realize the true nature of the soul alone by my penance, why not ensure that my subjects achieve realization too? And so he kidnapped Sita. That's pretty smart if you ask me.
