Hari is fast becoming another fave comic of mine. I'm glad I found him!!

My dad is a musician, and during most of his shows he says a few words of Ojibwe, followed by, "what's the matter, you don't speak American?"

afrikaans might be a language but again to his point - An estimated 90 to 95% of the Afrikaans lexicon is ultimately of Dutch origin, - which means twisted dutch

people always ask me if I speak Indian. Indians speak like hundreds of languages lol. But they don't mean harm, they probably meant "Hindi" so no offense. Ignorance isn't always racism, though the two are often linked.

@italophilee I think English is more widespread. Swahili is concentrated in East Africa, Arabic in the North, English all round from Nigeria to South Africa. 80% of cable channels (on DSTV, Africa's satellite decoder thingy) are English channels.

Hahahhahahahha.... it's funny before even watching this video, I already said to myself, "His punchline is going to be, "You mean colonial English? So, I speak African too!" And I was right!!" Hahaha.

I think the quote is meant to be arrogant, not ignorant.

Okay, I imagined that'd be it. I, on the other hand, didn't think it beyond the realm of possibility that a maybe a strange accent, a loud room and Hari's comic imagination might've lent themselves to a great joke without warranting comments accusing people of being racist. Don't get me wrong, though. I'm a big fan Hari and of this joke (ca.1999 Whose Line). And once I was extremely amused when someone once told she that she was adamantly against "mispronounciation".

@fomab en.wikipedia. org/wiki/File:Official_languages_in_Africa.svg as you can see, just by the sheer amount of mother tongue arabic speakers, arabic is a widely spoken language in africa. only nigeria, rwanda, south africa, liberia, and a few other countries have english as an official language. i agree though that swahili is concentrated in east africa (kenya/burund/rwanda/uganda/tanzania/some parts of DRC). DSTV is south african, of course its like that (i have it at home :)

o.o english is not the only widespread language in africa. there's swahili, arabic (which i'm pretty sure is the most spoken language in africa, not 100% though), and french.

Wait, what's wrong with thinking she might've meant Afrikaans. I know it's a Germanic language but that doesn't make it an any less commendable. Please educate me. It's okay. You're allowed. I'm not white.

Granted it is ignorant to say I am learning African. And yet, it is possible that it was a honest mistake. Not recalling the name of the language she was learning, she may have used the placeholder generic name "African" for the specific name. No biggie. Just clarify and skip the judging. ☺
