Just bought one of these as a starter bike and I actually like it. It's a 2006 and has decent power. I've watched a video before about how the 883 is like a girls bike. Not sure what that's all about. But who cares. I like it.

Anyone who complains that a Sportster is "not fast" is riding the wrong motorcycle. Sportsters are not fast - they're not supposed to be fast. But it's got an 883cc engine, so it's torquey and "fast enough." You really have to rev 'em up to get performance out of them. And even then, you won't be racing any Hayabusas. I've owned four Sportsters - still have two of them (currently an 883 and a 1200), and I can count on one hand the number of times I've *had* to use full throttle on either of them. People often ask me about the performance difference between them. I just shrug - I don't know. I don't drag race them. To me, they both seem the same, because I don't ride them like an idiot. Good things? Sportster have: self-canceling turn signals; rev-limiters, "tip-over" switches that kill the engine if the bike goes down. And that engine is absolutely friggin' bulletproof. An 883 will return up to 60 mpg if you can resist blipping the throttle like a moron at every stoplight. Bad things? They are small and light - not really a good two-up motorcycle. We Americans seem to think "bigger is better" when it comes to motorcycles. The Sportster seems like a middleweight these days. Another bad thing: Harley dealer salespeople will look down on you and ask, "When are you gonna get a real motorcycle?" They think they're being cute in using that tactic to try and sell you a Big Twin but they're just being condescending. Is the Sportster a perfect bike? Heck no. But as this video demonstrated, they are great bikes...fun and dependable...good "all-around" motorcycles.
