Adam, for what Harley charges we should not have to re engineer the whole damn suspension! After all, we are talking about Harley’s top of the line touring bike! Indian got it right, right out of the box! Mono shock long travel Fox shock, LED lighting, remote locking bags, riding modes, better balanced frame with low slung seating position, power windshield... and now a new 122 Horsepower liquid cooled motor ALL STANDARD! You just can’t ignore Indian these days! If Harley isn’t looking out for me, why should I look out for them? I am going with a brand that has it all figured out and engineered IN...That is Indian at this time. Maybe Harley should be paying more attention to improving their touring line instead of pushing a politically correct $33,000 ( taxes and fees) electric motor scooter! Sorry Adam, no sale on the Harley until they catch up with Indian! Ahhhh competition in America! I love it!

jim wortham Jim, it is obvious Indian/Polaris is in the motorcycle business for long term and not going anywhere. Look at the advanced tech they are investing in and they are very diverse producing all kinds of motor sport products. I think you should visit a Polaris store and walk through their product lines...they are well spread out in the motor sport world and have a very committed racing program and completely dominate the flat track circuit taking 1,2,3,4,5,6 place! No one is touching them! And now a liquid cooled 122 horsepower touring bike, Indian is not sitting on their hands and is steadily grabbing market share, and that is freaking Harley Davidson out! These days, people want value and innovation combined with a rumbling classic motorcycle design which includes a powerful fire breathing internal combustion engine! Not a electric motor scooter which reminds many people of a $33,000 wheelchair!

They have almost 200 dealers. Could they use a few more? Absolutely! But they don’t need the level of over saturation HD has. Does Chicago land area really need 30+ HD dealers? 4 Indian dealers in that same area is fine. Check out the video by Gears and Gadgets on this topic and you’ll see that there are plenty of Indian dealers and the brand is getting stronger.

Adam is right on. Suspension is important ! Adam carries a lot of extra weight on long road trips. Not like some of us ! In the old days we say “ T T-en “ ( Tavern To Tavern ) not going to far !!! I ride a 1997 Roadking ...21” stock air on front. Rear I made brackets for 10” coil overs, welded on and move forward 4” on the swing arm . Moved 5” on top forward, made new fender struts for old style “ Hinge Fender “ . 1970’s look. Stiffer swing arm bushings. Rico from Arizona “Ride Tight, Be Safe “ 😎🌵🌴🇺🇸🇺🇸

I've had my 98 FLHP for 22 years. I got rid of the stock shocks long ago. Went with progressive shocks and springs. Eventually added a brace to stiffen the transmission to frame which eliminated twist when cornering. You'd think a touring bike would come with great suspension from the factory but they don't.

Coming from the sport bike world, the first upgrade for my 2015 FLTRXS was suspension. At $20k, I would have thought the suspension would have been improved over the years. I threw on Revo-A outback and AXEO upfront. While rebuilding, I also replaced my seals. Oh man! What an upgrade! No frontend dive, and long lasting comfort in the rear! I’ve got 68k miles on the bike now. Legends are the way to go!

I upgraded my 2012 Ultra Limited rear suspension with a set of Super Shoxs and I noticed a huge improvement in the rideability of the bike on the very first ride. Everybody gets a bike and wants to change the air cleaner, pipes, mufflers, and other items, I would absolutely advise against all of that until the suspension is upgraded. Best money I've spent thus far on my bike.

As some other posters said, it is shameful that we have to do these expensive upgrades to a already way overpriced vehicle. 2020 and we still have to put LED lighting into the directionals ourselves. SMH. I am HD thru and thru, but it is getting ridiculous how they neglect the important stuff and instead charge the hell out of you to have parts that were once chrome, painted black instead. Sad. Good info on the suspension stuff tho Adam. Thanks

Adam, thanks for your videos on Legend shocks.I started dreaming about them after seeing your videos. I was finally able to add the Legend Revo Arcs on my 2014 Ultra Limited. I was just starting to get them dialed in for my 700mile trip out to join you in the Harley Parade. The morning I left to head to Texas for the Harley Parade, a young kid decided I wasn’t supposed to make it there and pulled out in front of me just 30 miles from my house. Now I’m working to get my broken wrist back into working order (read *riding capable*). I feel your pain on surgery recovery. Literally just stumbled upon this video. I have had many new bikes through the years and vowed I would never ever go back to Harley. Well, I got a great deal at the end of Dec 2019 on a new used 2016 Ultra Limited with 15 miles on it and brought it home. As soon as I got the bike, the modifications began and all the bad memories of my first Harley came back. I typically modify my bikes for safety reasons and comfort - thats about it. This is what I have replaced so far: 1) front turn signals to LEDs, 2) Seat and rider backrest, 3) tail light to LED and fillers to LED, 4) Stereo, 5) rear shocks, 6) Handle bars and grips and thats about it. Having to upgrade brought back all the bad memories of my first Harley because of the ridiculous costs of everything and sub par parts on the bikes. I am SOOOO glad I bought the bike used and not from a dealership because the bike was literally half price from a new 2020. Of all the bikes I have owned, only the Harleys needed this much upgrading. Forget any engine work or chrome, I literally had to replace parts for comfort and safety. Even my 2008 Goldwing I bought new didn't need half the stuff my Harley needed. The Goldwing was far from perfect, but it put out adequate power, had reverse, electronic suspension, etc... This is a main reason why Harley is slowly dying. I think the new Livewire is a perfect example of whats wrong with Harley. They are late to the game with technology, expensive and thinks everyone is going to buy into their branding. I guarantee that millennial's dont care about the Harley name and wont be spending $31k+ on an electric bike. Very sad.....

Almost lost it on a 13 SG in a high speed corner with a wobble. Traded it in for a 15 SGS and hit that same corner again at the same speed. Night and day difference. I have since added the Revo-A’s and I’m very happy with the improvement. Over the winter I plan on installing Legends cartridges in the front. Personally, I can’t justify making the jump to the M8 as I pretty much have mine where I want it and with my mods I can pretty much keep up.

Can’t agree on the frame. It’s the most rigid frame Harley has ever built. However the rear suspension is sub par. Pretty sad when you buy a motorcycle that is between 20-30k and have to buy a set of shocks that are another thousand dollars. There are great options out there ie. Legend, Russ Wernimont, etc. snowmobiles have had this tech for years.

It is so smooth and relaxing. No bumps!!! My Super Duke GT is half the cost of a Harley and it has traction control and cornering ABS which are important with a lot of weight. It it calculating hundreds of times a second, rebound and compression for the best ride.

Factory stock Harley shocks are adequate for around town and bar hopping but if your are laying down miles, upgrade that suspension! Best investment you can make. Street and Road Glides come with a shorter shock to give it that lowered look but it comes with a price in comfort and handling. I switched out my factory rear shocks last month for 13" Legend Revo A and did a 800 mile trip in the Ozarks. My review can be found on the Revzilla website for Legend Revo A shocks. I highly recommend them, it made a world of difference.

The new ones don't weave and wobble. Think they fixed that circa 2009. As to shocks, they do two things. 1. The spring stores and releases energy. 2. The dampers dissipate energy. The idea is to have enough spring and compression damping to keep you from bottoming out and enough rebound damping to rid the shock of energy so it isn't bouncing around at the top of the stroke. Too much and the shock packs and the tire won't stay on the ground.

Hi Adam I 'am a RCN Royal Canadian Navy ( Armed Forces) I sat down and watching motorcycle You Tube Videos, I bought a 2005 Electra Glide Classic EFI and every year I take it in to get things done that I cannot do, so this year I had the front brakes done completely, The other thing I had them do was the front forks, since people forget to get them look after, people forget about the maintenance program that Harley Davidson has put together. The year I bought the bike I started to hear a noise that was new to me and I took it into Barnes Harley Davidson in Victoria Victoria in BC Canada, this is the title Harley Davidson Twin Cam Chain Tensioner Problem 1999-2006. This work that was done should have been a recall since Harley new about it and idi not do the right thing and fix it they must have sold 16 years of selling that style of motorcycle That cost me just under $4,000. I did some research before I had bought my bike. kept up the great live you live

I did replace the factory suspension on my 2011 ultra limited. The price did factor in to what I put on though, I went with progressive mono tubes in the front and heavy duty adjustable progressives in the rear. I must say the mono tubes in the front made the biggest change as to the handling. Felt like the front was more planted to the road, is how I would describe it.

With my ‘89 Electra Glide Sport, I was highly satisfied the stiffness of the frame. At very high speed on off motorway, but very good roads (some 80mph, which is above 60 mph - the legal limitation) it was sort of wobbly on the front end. I added wind deflectors parallel to the fork rods and this significantly improved the stability. Later I swapped from Dunlop K291, which caused me to crash to Metzelers. It was like a totally new bike. As years passed by I‘m less aggressive on the road and have no wish to modify my 2011 Ultra Limited with regards to tyres or suspension. I added a passenger handrail for better moving the bike into my garage. I’ve seen a cool add on for the tranny, I could imagine to build in. 910 ibs is a lot more, than 715 ibs on my first dresser.

This why I bought an Indian Chieftain. I’ve always been a fan of the HD SGS, but when I test rode them both, to me there was no comparison. I live in the hills of Arkansas and the Indian feels so much lighter on her feet than the HD. It’s great that there are two companies that will push each other, giving us the customer better products to enjoy. I’m sure HD will be addressing this shortly, but they might be going back to the drawing board next week after Indian officially reveals the Challenger!! Exciting times for us riders. Lots of great bikes to choose from. At the end of the day, different bikes resonate with people for a variety of reasons. Go pick what speaks, and feels right to you, and enjoy the ride.

If you dont have the cash to get a legend set up you can find take off factory shocks off of a 17+ that you dont have to mess with air and they are adjustable as well...I found a set off facebook for 100 bucks just to have while I was redoing mine

Thanks for the advice! Relatively new rider (year 3) trying to do longer and longer rides. Now I'm up to 500mi+ in a day so any suggestions to help with comfort and handling are MUCH appreciated. And we all know if anyone knows about LONG distance rides it's you! Checking out this suspension out this weekend AND looking forward to getting my ASR seat setup sometime in November.

I also do allot of Kms in a couple of different countries (Australia and Thailand). In Australia I ride a 2018 CVO Ultra. At 40,000km the CVO strated to get a wobble on cornering, more so on high speed corners. Bike is only 2 years old and I've had back to HD many times all to no avail and the bike still wobbles through corners. HD is going to look at it again when I get back but I reckon its frame flex but im not sure why this has only started at about 40,000Km. Until recently I had an old SG I rode in Thailand and I fitted Legend shocks which were just sensational (never had a cornering problem and could ride all day on rough Thai roads without issue). Like many of your subscribers after expending allot of money on a new CVO im not sure why I should be forced to upgrade suspension once again to sort a long term HD issue. In Thailand ive just purchased a new heritage and touch wood no issue to date.

I went Progressive 970 in the rear of my bike, and GSXR-750 forks up front. Fantastic improvements! However, you forgot to mention the intake and exhaust upgrades that should really be done on these HDs. Harley has to lean out the bikes to get them to pass EPA regulations, and by doing an intake, exhaust and retune, you'll increase your horsepower AND longevity

For those that don’t have the cash to go legend, you can buy 13” Harley sportster shocks on eBay for well under $100 or a basic set of progressive brand shocks and have a night and day nice ride on your street glide or road glide. But always get the 13” shock not the 12” like what comes originally on your bike and for 1/4th the price or less!!

Hey Adam... I couldn't agree more... "Suspension" is the weakest link in HD's M/C's! I bought my first Harley in 1982 because I thought they were going out of business... It was looking bleak for them back then, and HD was the last American M/C. All the Brit Bike Mfrs were down and out of business. Nothing like a little good old COMPETITION to benefit the customer! America is still the GREATEST Country on the globe! That's what will make HD either get it together or get gone!! I'm still riding HD's, mostly out of Brand Loyalty, but I have considered buying a different product! Thanks for all you do and for "THE AMERICANS" !!! Best Always, JP

Brother you hit the nail on the head with this video content! So many riders are wrapped up in the amount of horsepower and torque They could squeeze out of their bikes, forgetting the basic elements that allow them to ride whatever they have at present, the fastest! Suspension, brakes, and tires THOSE ARE THE BIG THREE THAT SHOULD ALWAYS GET UPGRADED FIRST! My time in the Marine Corps has allowed me to ride various platforms of bikes, as a matter of fact, my first two bikes were the FXDX 2002, and the VRSCR 2006. Those two bikes showed me how Harley no matter what the platform of engine, skimped on the handling and braking! The VRSCR unfortunately for corner carving enthusiasts like myself went away like the Dyna Glide. Whether that be the FXDX or FXR. As soon as I upgraded the fork internals and the rear shocks of my FXDX with Progressive brand suspension components, I was able to ride my bike that much faster, it handled way better, and I was able to throw it around with a lot more confidence! The VRSCR Because it came from the factory with Showa (Japanese sportbike) suspension, and Brembo (European top of the line) brake components was a corner carving, back roads, animal! This was the only Harley-Davidson straight from the factory, that would hang with and sometimes edging out my buddies that rode sport bikes! My opinion doesn't matter for much, but my riding experience does. I have earned various certifications and have hours on Houston Motorsport ranch motorcycle track as well as the various roads such as tail of the dragon, well-known mountainside courses in Japan, skyline drive, and other locally known places on the East Coast. Harley-Davidson is way behind the power curve when it comes to the most important aspects on making a bike handle to its best potential. They need to take more cues from makers of both Japanese and European motorcycle companies to step their game up within the braking and suspension elements of a motorcycle. Stop relying on their legendary namesake. There's no substitution for performance!

And not ONCE did you mention rear-steer . For those who are wondering , that's when the swingarm/trans/motor unit moves laterally in relation to the frame under hard cornering . The '96 could definitely benefit from tieing that trans to the frame so it can't move and an upgraded swingarm pivot system . My '90 FLHTCU has a custom bracket attached to the trans that mounts a heim link to the frame cross member . That keeps the trans from moving laterally in the frame . It also has a pair of custom made chromoly steel and aluminum bronze swingarm pivots -designed by me and machined in my shop - in place of the stock cleve blocks . A friend got my prototype set , at 35,000 miles he found no discernible wear . He and I had great fun chasing sporty-bikers around here in north central Arkansas , they couldn't believe two old men on fat bikes could hound them as hard as we did .

If you have a 2017 M8, make sure you check your primary and transmission oil levels all the time!! The oil will transfer! HD has a bulletin about it and you'll fill up the primary with transmission oil. If its not shifting correctly and rough, or your clutch feels weird, this is probably why. The 'fix' is a vent kit the dealer installs. So, get it done (FREE), don't let the dealership tell you its not an issue or charge you for it!

Achilles' heel is the saying not Achilles' tendon. "According to a myth arising later, his mother had dipped the infant Achilles in the river Styx, holding onto himby his heel, and he became invulnerable where the waters touched him-that is, everywhere except the areas of his heel that were covered by her thumb and forefinger." I have 14 Ultra Ltd and I bought it used 11/17. I took off the air shocks and put on Harley’s next level shock with the dial on it. I think the BK problem with these is that only the left shock has an adjustment, not the right. I think probably limits the shocks as compared being able to adjust each individually. I would love to upgrade to Legends 😎😎
