Well done Del, I wore through my rear brake line on my '04 (154000 km) and was educated on DOT 5 fluid. It was hard to find and quite pricy, being silicone based I did not risk mixing with DOT 4 . Like you say , money well spent. Enjoyed!

Good to get rid of that s-bend that would look more at home under a sink.😁 Penny raises the bar again with the "wrench eye view" of the job. Epic work my friends. Why are you running your new brake line through metal p clips with no rubber grommet to protect them, just order the correct grommets to be fitted to the line when made, strange you take off the oe grommets on the line but feel there is no need for them on your new one.

I got my old FXDX out this morning to give it the once over ready for the MOT and found that the rear brake light switch was stuck on. Luckily I'd already bought a HEL brake line and switch but never fitted it. The fluid in the master cylinder looked OK but when I bled it the fluid coming out looked like thin wallpaper paste. I suspect that someone had mixed DOT 5 and something else. I gave it a good flush through and now it seems to be fine. Hopefully no serious damage done and the brake feels much better now.

Ive had that too a couple of times, both on older Dynas too.. i think the DOT5 eventually goes grey and cloudy over time. the purple die does eventually wear off, so it may have just been old fluid.. possibly with a little water in it too.. so good job you changed it

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
Sure thing buddy, I maybe should have said a little more about it as there is one watch word with DOT5, kind of an achilles heel, and that's because it doesn't absorb water, any water sits in little blobs, like the blob I managed to poke in half in the master cylinder if you noticed... and as those drops of water sit against the metal, they can cause accelerated corrosion, more than DOT4... so it's always important to change it and it doesn't last longer for this reason... I'd still swop it over every 2yrs even if it is a bit more expensive!

Del and Penny. Thanks for another great video. Regarding the clamps of the pipe, 3:21 3:49 I would not leave the pipe free inside the ID clamps bore that is larger than OD pipe, it will cause the pipe to wear out quickly. Maybe you will make bushings on the lathe, two halves, that wear on the tube, and have shoulders so they don't slip from the clamps?

One thing I find unfortunate about using the syringe, and sometimes we have to, is that it seems to aerate the brake fluid something crazy and then I have to do another bleed 12 to 24 hours later. Noticeable air gets pulled out during this last bleed.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
It is possible to use the syringe method incorrectly, if you're a bit rough with it, you'll aerate it and more so with DOT4 as the glycol fluids are less viscous so easier to aerate! But if you're really careful and work smooth and steady, you can get it right... you should always do a downward bleed after purging upwards for the reasons you said, and it always helps to tape the lever in and express the last of the air out the top! Brakes are never a straightforward job are they mate, they always fight you aye?!

@Moonfleet41

It's a pretty simple process mate... you can use a piece of electric flex, it acts and behaves in a very similar way to the brake hose, so will curve and follow bends in a similar manner... and place it in the centre of the banjo hole, which could be referred to as 'banjo centres'... and then simply route the cable, whichever way you're happy with, allowing length for suspension travel and full lock on the steering. And the bends in the banjos should be the same as standard factory hoses, so just tell them what they are (plus don't forget to tell them the bore of the banjo and the thread of the banjo bolt as they can be different top and bottom on Harleys, but of course they should know this from their OEM specs). Hope that's helpful and good luck with it.

Can I add that DOT 5 and DOT 5.1 are NOT interchangeable. EAsy to confuse. From Google: "Since DOT 4 and 5.1 are both glycol-based brake fluids they are compatible with each other, which means they can be readily mixed without harming your brake system. It is important never to mistake DOT 5.1 (glycol-based) with DOT 5 which is silicone-based and should never be mixed with any other DOT fluid."

Most welcome mate, glad you enjoyed it, DOT5 isn't really a modern solution, they don't use it in the current line up of bikes as it's too thick for ABS systems, was originally developed for the military and classic cars which sit for a long time and can't be changed regularly.
@daveco1270
@daveco1270 Жыл бұрын
I would assume when you took off that banjo bolt attached the master cylinder, the old brake fluid would come out and get all over everything, but it doesn't appear that's what happened. I stayed in the master cylinder until you sucked it out with that syringe. Would it take someone pulling in the brake lever to get that fluid to start squirting out of there? (It's good to know you can remove that bolt and not have brake fluid go all over the place.) Also interesting that you refilled it from the caliper, not the top of the master cylinder.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
DOT 5 silicone fluid is a lot more viscous and unless you pump the lever it doesn't drain out under it's own weight, and yes you can fill from either end, but just quicker and more efficient to push it up from the bottom.

100% agree... As a Motorcycle Instructor one of the things I discuss with my students is doing a P.O.W.E.R check Petrol, Oil, Water, Electrics and Rubber.... And I always ask this question..... Whats the only thing that matters that works on the bike before you take it for a ride... I get answers like: the Engine. My reply to that is if it doesn't run you don't go anywhere so no not the correct answer. The lights. My reply to that is if the indiators don't work you can do hand signals so no not the correct answer. The Tyre pressure. if the wheel is flat you won't ride it so not the correct answer. A few people say the Brakes to which I say that is the correct answer... You want to know that the brakes work before you even start the bike, if they don't work don't ride it.... For 10 seconds to check if you hold the front and back levers one at a time if the brakes hold you in place when you push the bike firmly, you know that you have a set of working brakes. if you haven't ridden the bike in a month check them. if you have never ridden the bike you are getting on DEFINITELY check them.... Brakes are the only thing that matters that works. So show and do as many brake videos as you have to!!!! Great job!!!
