H D quoted me $450 to Chang my fork oil on my 2010 Heritage. Needless to say I need to learn how to do it myself. Thanks for the video.

How's the ride since you changed the fork oil? We adopted a '99 Fat Boy from my brother in law a couple of years ago. Had to replace the shocks. Front end floats like an old 1970's Buick.... so I'm curious what you experienced with just the fork oil change. Thanks.

I didn't really notice much of a difference between the old fork fluid and the new. I really just changed this to replace the original fork fluid since it was nearly 25 years old. I have since acquired a 1979 Harley-Davidson XLS 1000 (sportster) and I completely tore the forks down, rebuilt and changed the fluid from what I assume was the original fork fluid while replacing with Screaming Eagle Heavy fork fluid vs. the Type E the sportster recommended. A knowledgeable mechanic at my local HD service center suggested this to stiffen up the front end on the older ironhead. I won't be able to express the difference since I didn't ride this sportster prior but I will be sure to ask the original owner to take it for a spin and tell me how different it feels from when he rode it 10 years ago but that's still a long shot due to the gap in riding time :)

i would not trust the amount coming out as you dont know if it is correct? consult the manual for correct amount! look up what the correct tool size you need and use the correct cheap tool, it saves a possible headache and dent in the wallet later.... also part #'s used is always nice good job thanks

Don't use channel locks in place of the correct wrench, Harbor Freight wrenches are cheap and a better option than plyers untill you can afford better tools. I ride and repair older bikes and the damage done by people using the wrong tools is widespread. A good video otherwise.

Not the correct way to add fork oil. You don't simply measure what came out....because you could have lost fork oil over time due to bad seals. Your service manual will give a volume in ounces or cc's for your forks. The volume will frequently specify a volume for drained, cleaned and dried, and a different volume for just drained (some residual oil will still be there). In addition, you will usually see an "air gap" figure in millimeters (sometimes a small range is given). This is a measurement taken from the top of your cylinder down to the fluid level. Measuring this ensures the absolute proper fluid level has been attained. If an air gap range is given, less oil = a softer suspension, and more oil = a stiffer suspension.

BOTH the SAME AMOUNT IN EACH FORK ??? I DON'T THINK SO PALLY
@pauldurdan1549 Жыл бұрын
also you have to remove the fork spring to measure the amount of oil (gap)at the top.
@staynless76 жыл бұрын
The spring won't come out of those forks until you remove them from the upper and lower fork brackets and then remove the fork tube plug.

You tube is full of this wrong information. consult your workshop manual or go and talk to your local Harley-Davidson trained mechanic. Do not do anything this chap is showing you!!
