Harley-Davidson Gave Indian Their Business

Harley-Davidson gave Indian their business, plain and simple. Indian motorcycle is filling gaps in the market that Harley-Davidson has absolutely abandoned. Harley-Davidson eliminated every model from their lineup that offered any kind of value per dollar on their product. Indian motorcycle however is still offering some brand new motorcycles at prices we saw years ago here in 2025. Harley-Davidson is losing the war to Indian motorcycle on all fronts including the future. While Indian motorcycle is opening new dealers, Harley-Davidson is tuning the lights off in many dealerships.

I absolutely believe HD should bring lower cost option bikes back to the market. Especially in the Bagger class. No frills and a basic stereo. None of the fancy gadgets, I’ll put those on or option them if I want them. And do the same with a full dresser. It also bums me out that there is no Wide Glide style softail with that factory raked fork.

That’s why I bought a ‘17 RK. I got the M8 motor, factory custom paint (Laguna Orange), did a stage 1 and added a stereo. It’s easy to handle around the city, and comfortable on the long trips. It’s entry level touring bike, but I added the things I wanted to make it my own, without breaking the bank.

I purchased my first Harley in 1978. I saved up a down payment and bought a red 1979 XLH. Added accessories one at a time, had to save up for those too. Owning a Harley was a big deal for me because buying a Harley was a commitment. Now they want the buyers that can purchase the bike, thousands in upgrades/accessories/clothing all at once. Can’t blame them, go where the money is. But when you stop offering entry level bikes you are telling us you don’t want us any more. And that’s a mistake because if it doesn’t work out with the money crowd we probably won’t be there to support you like we have done in the past.

Harley Davison is rapidly pricing themselves out of business. I own two I have a road glide and a heritage classic 114. There is nothing affordable in the Harley line anymore, and every year, they continue to raise their prices for absolutely no changes to the bike. Or very little, they want to charge you different amount for color and there's so little paint on a motorcycle. It's unreal, you can buy a car in any color you want, and it does not affect. The price of the car, however, a motorcycle. The square footage of paint is so minimum. They want to charge you anywhere from 300 to 2500 just simply for a paint job that's going down. An assembly line anyway, Harley is pricing themselves out of business. Especially with the way their CEO is operating the company, they want to make more off of each motorcycle, instead of doing more motorcycles for less, that has never worked anywhere. In the business of automotive.Look at stellantis right now, with dodge and ram and jeep. Add numerous other automotive dealers. When are these elite CEO's gonna realize? People are done paying for their b******* The world is changing. People are getting smarter and they want more for their money, not less for a name

I own a 04 Road King Classic with the plastic windshield and I love it. I love the looks and it is a little sporty. I would love more horsepower but, it does everything I need it to do. Book value says it isn't worth much, but I wouldn't take less than 15k for it with the upgrades I have on the bike. I would love the larger motor and maybe one day. I'd also love the 6 speed transmission, which is my next major upgrade. It has a shaft kit replacement that will drop into the existing case. The air cooling is a bit of a headache here in Texas but it works. The new Harley's all look alike to me, the color choices are terrible in my opinion, and the price is just stupid! I've not looked at the Indian very close, well I can't afford one and I'll never sell my RK unless it is a last resort situation. Sounds like I may if I'm ever in the market for a new bike though.

Harley needs to drop that WEF agent for a CEO, and go back to producing and experimenting with more normal displacement motorcycles, leave them customizable for the customer, like the evo. I think they should come out with a smaller displacement like 1,000cc or 1300 V4. They should start making cruiser missles or in the very least race bikes in their style to compete in the market again. I also have an idea that would make them so much more money, while keeping the business open for all employees. But I'm just a customer, what do I know? Other another note I'm currently riding a Honda 1300 V twin and I just done the intake. I'm certain to smoke a lot of new Harleys.... tuning it tomorrow

I have to tell ya, price isn't the first thing I'm looking at. The woke shit proved to me where this company is. I'm not down with it. It would take a radical change to even make me consider going onto an HD sales floor again. They'd literally have to fire the vast majority of the company and start over. If I ever replace my FXLRST, it will be for an older twin-cam. HD is dead to me.

Every Indian bike is far superior to the comparable HD model as far as riding dynamics. I rode every bike Indian makes at sturgis and most of the bikes Harley sells on the same day. With that being said, minus the ftr, I dont like the way the Indian bikes look.

I had to laugh that Harley-Davidson made the Pan America ST, a road going version of the adventure bike to compete with what I assume the FTR. Indian sort of rebranded that FTR away from the flat track bike into a sport bike since they outlawed race only engines in the racing series lol.
@ianm432
@ianm432 23 сағат бұрын
@GixxerFoo they also make an FTR Rally, which is a fluffed up adventure bike. The Panam is much better at medium-ish offroad bike. But then Indian also figured out it wasn't actually any good at flat track racing and took the goofy sized tires off of it. Lol

Had a 98 Dyna I regret selling but had to downsize storage. Kept the 12 street glide that will cook your legs but I can ride it for 8+ hours vs the Dyna that would have you searching for a stop to rest every hour 😅 Harley uses the thinnest oil possible. May work up north but in Florida you need to run 50 W. Makes a huge difference in cooling. HD needs to do better for sure. Thanks for the video

Well since you asked so nicely, I would be remiss if I didn't attempt to honor your request. Honestly, I think H-D has forever lost its way and will file chapter 11 followed by chapter 7 soon after. In a perfect world where corporate narcissism and elitism didn't exist maybe they would stay on the path that garnered them great success. Either way H-D didn't get to the level they were at 10 years ago at their peak by following anyone. They used to lead the pack, alpha dog that made everyone else pay attention and take notes. Ahhh, those were the days! Now, I just patiently wait for the asteroid to end all existence before it gets much worse.

Harley, if they plan on staying in business, they better change what the heck they're doing these days and follow Indian or any motorcycle manufacturer for that matter. HD's business model has gone down the toilet. Almost seems like they don't care to get new customers to come in and buy. I was looking for a bagger. I thought I wanted a fixed fairing so I test rode a road glide. I then went on a demo ride at the Indian dealer and found i liked the Chieftain with the fork mounted fairing a lot better. But compared to the Harley it was smoother, handled great, and had more equipment for the price. I came home with a 24 Chieftain Dark Horse. I had a Yamaha XSR900 that I crashed and am still recovering from. I was seriously considering the Harley Lowrider ST over the Indian Chief Dark Horse to replace the Yamaha. Now that they released the new prices I'm definitely going with the Indian. Harley has lost there God damn mind with those prices they're gonna regret it.

I hated the look of the Indian bikes when Polaris first started making them. Just plain ugly to me. But they have been getting better and better each year. IMO Harley still has the better fit and finish...but that gap is closing too. Also, a big majority of Harley buyers don't like change. They want the 2025 models to look and sound just like the 2005 models. That makes it hard to compete when Indian has more freedom to evolve and offer new features.

The German CEO of Harley has stated that he wants to make it a "premium" brand, focusing on selling fewer bikes at higher prices. Well, Iove got new for him... Harley has ALWAYS been a premium brand! Harleys have ALWAYS been expensive! But now, the MoCo seems to be trying to charge as much as they possibly can while making the base bikes less desirable, so customers will pay to upgrade to a decent paint color that isn't a BORING gray, or pay more to go blacked out. I personally hate the blacked out look, but I'm old and I love chrome... I loved chrome on 4-wheel vehicles too, but it has sadly gone the way of the Dodo Bird. You can't even find any new vehicle with any chrome on it these days. The MoCo seems to be trying to optimize their profits by essentially gouging the customer for the options they really want, instead of offering the best value in the market. Their discontinuing the Ultra and RG Ultra for 2025 speaks volumes as to their direction... they don't care about continuing to try to appeal to the older riders who bought Ultras and RG Ultras anymore... "performance baggers" is where they are focused now. And that market is largely composed of younger riders - except younger riders in large part do not have the money to buy $30,000 motorcycles. I get that the MoCo thinks that market is the future, but I think they are going to have a difficult time addressing it profitably. Indian is now a powerful competitor to Harley, with a very deep and broad product line with new liquid-cooled engines that don't have to run super lean to meet EPA regs. If I was in the market for a new bike, I would be strongly considering Indian. The new Chieftain with the liquid-cooled PowerPlus engine seems to be a very strong competitor to the SG, and is priced pretty aggressively. The Challenger is also a very strong competitor to the RG. I think Harley styling is still better - but those lowers on the new 2025 SG Ultra look an AWFUL lot like the ones on the Indian Pursuit... keyword AWFUL.
