@Blockhead I have a 2016 Electra Glide Ultra with what I’m told is a Stage 1 Screaming Eagle kit on it, it has an X pipe exhaust and I recently tooled around the dealership lot in first gear and the bike acted(sounded) like I was lugging it by going too slow! I bought it as it sits now and I’m wondering if there’s more than the Stage 1kit involved! They provided the tuner that was used on it, but maybe Chris can provide me with a little more information than what I currently have! The lot area around the dealership is not real large and I was trying not to hit parked cars or get the bike moving too fast to maneuver around the building or parked vehicles. Maybe I’m just scared of the power the bike has.

You need exhaust scavenging I wouldn’t call it back pressure since that’s a loaded thing to say You need a 2 into 1 for flow and exhaust to to essentially pull the air out without running flow

Just remember to clean and recharge your air cleaner when the red oil starts to turn black. The oil is what traps the minute particles of dust, and the filter element needs to be cleaned regularly if you want to keep your motorcycle in top condition.

You Don't need back pressure; you need velocity. Think of it like a water pipe... if the pipe is bigger than the volume of water you are moving, the flow is really slow. A perfectly sized pipe will increase the flow rate. Now if you had a perfectly sized pipe with multiple obstacles (Google tesla valve, it uses only back pressure to form a one way valve) then you would have turbulence that can significantly reduce the flow rate.... thus reducing the HP which happens when we want to reduce sound decibels and emissions. Exhaust pulses with every cylinder firing so if the goal is maximum horse power... then we need to create an Exhaust in the perfect dimension with the straightest, shortest travel, to reduce friction loss and to evacuate the cylinder of all gases. Some ways we do this is by making the perfect pipes different lengths, and merging them together into "collectors" the first firing cylinder... basically siphons the second cylinders gases creating better harmonics and more velocity while moving the gases to a safe spot to vent. In short: it's true every Exhaust has back pressure do to friction loss. But it's false to say you need a little back pressure for an engine to run. What some engines need is a little velocity.

I disagree with criss. Get a bike to operating temp and the entire length of those pipes should be well over 250°f at the tip and only gets hotter as you get closer to the head. The volume inside that head is way less the the amount of volume that is in the exhaust. There is no situation that ambient temp air will go from the tip of that pipe to the head with out heating up first. The exhaust/air that may get suched back into the lifters will be at least 350°f and is gone quick enough that the energy doesn't have time to cool soak said part. Every single metal has a expansion and contraction ratio for temp. And the amount of time it takes to soak or dissipate. That time is not fractions of seconds. Also, is there not cool air being sucked into the head to begin with? You know from the air filter... yea, that's fine on the surface of the exhaust lifter but not that little queef of back pressure suction. Right. Volume my friend, volume.

And for those of you with Carbeureted motors, the stage 1 is still a 3 step process, but a little more mechanically involved. In place of a tuner (used on FI engines) you re-jet the carb, which will allow a higher fuel flow rate.

But doesn’t HD still honor the warranty if you buy all the components from them at typically top of the line prices? And maybe also only for dealer installation? That seems like part of HDs marketing strategy. for what it’s worth I think that they are a good company but as a believer in “proper British “ V twins, I just don’t get all that poundage. My last Norton weighed well under 400 lbs vs. modern Triumph over 500, including fake carbs. And most HDs start around 600. I’d already be at the cafe before you got there. Not a racer but if you aren’t going fast you may as well get a Vespa. Oh, wait, that is exactly what the Mods did. Vintage Norton’s forever.

My first roadglide had stage one with an aftermarket exhaust. It came with the tuner and a dyno print out to prove its gain in output. It was a decent difference. Of course I went from an 05 to with an 88 on it to a rg with a 2019 rg 114 mk 8. My current roadglide is a 114 mk8 but doesn't yet have any upgrades. I traded for a 2020 rg special commemorative in blue and white. I did notice the difference in power but the 114 is still a powerful engine. The bike you worked on looked great with the stock chrome exhaust. To bad the customer didnt go with an aftermarket chrome pipe. I agree it sounds much better and I'm sure feels better powered but with the chrome it already has that just looks off. I would've gone with a long chrome pipe . Do those who are already subscribed loose the greasiness on the fingers or are were just greasier?
