After removing the stock air cleaner cover on my newly-acquired '95 Heritage I found the previous owner had installed a Vance & Hines air cleaner with a washable filter like that one. Gave it a good clean and was amazed at the dirt that came off it. I wiped off any excess filter oil after giving it a chance to soak into the media. Your "spin-dry" method is ingenious, well done mate!

I run DNA filters on my Triumph, but I have two of them. That way there is always one in use on the bike, and one either in maintenance or on the shelf once maintenance is complete (my filters are rectangular, and the spin-dry method is not the best idea). Over the years of using various K&N or DNA filters on various machines I've also found that the filter material should be COMPLETELY dry prior to oiling, otherwise the oil isn't fully absorbed into the filter medium.

It feels great having a bike properly serviced step by step. A very rewarding task. They might not run a lot better afterwards, but you know they're perfect for upcoming rides. I have quite a few things to do after riding the steep Italian gravel trails with my Beta Alp 200: Air filter (I have a K&N system similar to this Harley, but a foam filter), engine oil and filter, fork oil. And get the linkage system greased, it's squeaking over each and every stone. Thanks for your videos, Günter/Nürnberg

I have to say that the K&N kit is more convenient with the pump bottle an spray can. The instructions also say to rinse from the inside out. Just my two cents. I appreciate the videos though, there's always something new to be learned 🦉

I absolutely love the fj1200 and am glad the trike fell through. Fitted a brand Pipercross washable filler (couldn't get a k&n) brilliant bike. Everyone likes it. Now, I got the rest of the bike to service. Fortunately, I bought everything to do it as I have just lost my job, and that position was housekeeping. Great video, Del x

If an Air Filter Cleaning Kit is not at hand, what lubricant could be used for oiling the filter? Thanks for your videos, as always great content. You mentioned proper air filter oil, so is it better to not reoil the filter if no air filter oil is available?

Another good informative video man. Hey I didn't have the proper k and n filter cleaner for my sns stealth so I used s100. It seemed to do a good job, I let it dry, oiled it with k and n oil, and put it back on the bike. Do you think s100 will damage the cotton with repeated uses?. It did a really good job cleaning the filter. I didn't have the money to buy the proper filter cleaner so I used what I had on the shelf man....
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
I can't really answer that as I don't know what the 'cotton' actually is, if it truly is just cotton, I doubt it, and I don't know what's in the S100 either, probably nothing too harmful, but interestingly, one viewer did say that he'd been washing his filter, for many years, in a strong solution of domestic washing powder and apparantly it works really well, so for sure, use what you have in a pinch always"

Well of course, any vehicle maintenance work comes with a footprint, and in fact so does anything automotive ! but using this as a case in point, a dirty air filter makes a vehicle run rich, like the choke is on, and cleaning it rectifies that... i suppose you could say it's all about management, i dispose of all my waste as responsibly as i can, and my power usage is based on the most effective equipment, LED lighting, low energy ventilation, Lithium battery tools etc etc... Thanks for your kind support mate. it's much appreciated !

MotoX air filter cleaner sprays do just as good a job as the K&N sprays I've found. Can then use up the rest of K&N oil... win win😊
@PBDoohan
@PBDoohan Жыл бұрын
@@markellen-bp8vsI use MX filter oils and cleaners regularly and they are definitely the way to go for the soft sponge filters. Buy the cleaner in a 5L and the oil in a 1L bottle. They Will last you dozens of cleans, the sprays are also really expensive in comparison (I clean after almost every dirt ride). I re-use the old cleaner, it goes into a tall thin container after use, where the sediment drops out of solution between cleaning. The old cleaner I just use for "roughing out" the bulk of the filter contaminants, then return it to the storage container. I then do a second clean using fresh new oil which means I only use 150ml or so new cleaner per filter. I find a 1L oil pouring jug to work really well for mushing the foam filters into to clean, and it's easy to pour used cleaner back into the re-used container. I just don't see how the low pressure dribbling of oil over a filter can really clean inside it. Really need some good agitation, but that can be hard to get!

Your videos are a great help. I have a 2014, 48. Done only 4k. I done my filter last night. Noticed when I inspected behind the butterfly valve in the throttle body, light dusting on black really fine grit. Is this normal? How would I go about cleaning it? Thanks colin.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
You can get a very light residue of waxy build up on the butterfly plate.. it's from the oil vapour sucked in through the filter.. It's the very reason you must not 'over oil' the filter, and yes, just wipe it off with a microfiber cloth and some carb cleaner, should just wipe away .!

Great tutorial as always. Sorry if its not air filter related but I have one question if you don't mind. I'm struggling to find an answer or solution: on my 2017 Iron 883 I have a evap charcoal cannister leaking oil. And I'm not sure what I suppose to do, it s a very thick honey like oil dripping while stationary. I'm not even sure if this suppose to be on the bike as I was only reading that the Californian spec bikes have them for emmision purposes. I'm in the UK and the bike "apparently" was bought in the UK as new. Do you have any idea why its leaking oil and how the solve it or just remove it from the bike. Many thanks in advance.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
If it was fitted from the factory then it's certainly a California bike.. they're only fitted to catch and condense fuel vapour from the fuel tank breather.. eventually they just get literally 'full', and it's a nasty sticky black goo, pretty toxic too.. so you can just remove it and just 'delete' the evap system all together. You can remove everything including the solenoid, just leave the tank breather hose at the top as the tank needs to breath. Hope that helps.. it's covered in your manual in easy steps !
@MrWestcliffe
@MrWestcliffe Жыл бұрын
@Moonfleet41 Thank you very much for the explanation. Much appreciated 🙏. It's strange that it was not promoted by the garage that the bike is imported. I will try to remove it. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything about this evap delete in my owners manual. I will try to look for some tutorials and hopefully will give me some idea how to get started.

Washing harsh chemicals and oil down the drain is saving the environment? And basically you've turned your motorcycle into a hoover because it's definitely going to suck in some dirt, that's why you'll never see oiled gauze filters from the OEM
@Moonfleet41

Don't kid yourself there's anything green about vehicles in the first place mate, even electric ones, they all have a footprint... the only chemicals involved here are soap and as for washing it down the sink, what do you do with your Nana's roasting tin, where does that grease go... it's just responsible management and I personally don't agree with throwing OEM disposable filters, that contain non degradable paper, wire, rubber and plastic in to landfill at every service, imagine how many vehicles are serviced every year. No-one's saving the environment, maybe we're just picking the least wasteful option!

If you take a little closer look, the engine re-breathes the rocker tube's outlet, and it's sucked in inboard of the filter, it doesn't pass through it so it can't contaminate it.
