Hello Delboy! I just read your story about how you got into wrenching on bikes. Very Koool! Took a ride on my Sporty came back to house, at a given place I shut off gas do float bowl is empty when Im at my place so gas doesn't sit in carb, she is idling a bit and I see white smoke curling up from front lower left near shifter. It seems like the wires from the stator are very hot. I shut the bike off. it is raining heavily. have you ever heard of the stators plug going bad and shorting out? I guess it is the rectifier/regulator. HD says 19 to 26 volts per 1,000 revs, will check to see if stator got grounded, if it did in 2 places the coils will overheat and burn out. Muswell Hill that u mentioned and other places I have heard of from Rumpole of the bailey, a large cigar smoking barrister with great stories.

I just did my 1st full purge change. Stock 2002 FSXTDI Deuce 8560 miles. I rode my bike 5300 miles on 2 tank and filter changes. It took me about 2hrs cause finding my filter wrench was a 30min waste. My return line had Oring/hard spacer/Oring. The magnet was clean aside from the normal spec of black dust after 2500 miles. Thank you! Your podcasts are so well edited, even a mechanical idiot can do it! I feel very reassured, knowing for a fact that my engine is wear free and clean inside. I am an endless haunt about clean engines, inside and outside, because I owned and repowered 7 different types of boats over 45+yrs skiing and on open water. There ain't no tow trucks at sea! When the pair of engines under the deck suddenly stop, start paddling! 😂 I have never been towed back to the dock since I stepped on a boat in 1967. Other people's boats for sure, but never mine. Blue Skies and Rubber Down Everyone!

Fantastic Video's. All of them. I was confused about one thing though. After the 10 revolutions then replacing the oil filter, I noticed the oil level in the tank was not dropping the way I thought it would. I watched you cycle engine, then add oil, cycle, add oil, etc. Basically I was cycling 10 rev's, stopping, cycling 10 more, stopping, etc. Never saw the level in the tank drop until about the 4th or 5th cycle. So my question is, if I'm watching the level in the tank carefully, do I really need to stop at 10 rev's to add more or can I keep cycling until I see the level drop? Thanks again for these Video's!

At the 14 minute mark you talk about the O-ring going in the tank and then getting sucked though the oil system. Wouldn't there be a screen and or a filter to keep things from getting sucked up into the lubricating system? I know we don't want to plug up the screen so it's best to find it, but I don't think it will go very far. Great videos. Aloha
@Moonfleet412 жыл бұрын
Not to my knowledge Pete, the outlet hole in the tank is straight through and I imagine the first filter it would meet is the actual oil filter, but it probably wouldn't get that far as a rubber O-ring would wedge in an oil way long before that then impede flow.

Two years on and about to do my fourth service, I still haven’t done the full purge, although I don’t argue it’s better. I’ve never wanted to risk losing or breaking the fitting parts, but I might actually have a go at it this time. What’s funny however, is not having found one technician, or DIYer who even knows about this, and I’ve asked a bunch of people. What’s important however, is your videos more than any others inspired me to do all this work myself, and I’ve learned so much. Everything in this series of 5 is so, so easy, and my bike is in tip top maintenance wise all the time. Thank you for making these and making it look as easy as it is.

Most welcome indeed Patrick, and im very proud the our videos have been such an inspiration in keeping your bike in top condition. It's not critical that you purge the old oil out, but as you can see there is a fair bit left behind with the dry sump system on the Softails, and ive found over the following miles after the purge change that the new oil stays cleaner for longer, which naturally means it is less contaminated with old oil.. Who knows why the Dealers don't bother to support the practice, im not really interested as to why, im just looking at my oil, and using common sense to make sure its as clean and free from the old sump oil as possible.. Ride safe my friend, and thank you for your support .

Thank you so very much Delboy, now I know where all the dirty oil came from, when I draint the crankcase, (the plug under the engine in the middle) Your way of changing oil is, in my opinion the only wright way. Thanks buddy, you're very kind, there isn't actually that much dirty oil left in the engine, if you were to scrape out the dirty oil in some way, it'd probably be less than half a cupful, but when you get almost 1.5pints of dirty oil out, much of that is actually new oil that's rinsed the linings of the oil ways and all the hoses and cleaned them, like a detergent, so you are sacrificing, maybe, a pint of your new oil to wash out the old stuff, but as you no doubt agree, it is so worth it... your new oil will stay clean for at least 1000miles before it even begins to discolour so the next purge you do will run clear in, maybe, half a pint... thanks again, ride safe, Del

@Moonfleet413 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, please don't take a downer on the dealers, they're doing nothing wrong, the factory doesn't stipulate that you must purge a Softail engine as the 5k oil change interval is probably more than it needs to be, you can push them to 10k in the right climate and it won't hurt them, they're a very robust engine, but purging is just a purist practice to make sure you've removed all oil and I'm sure if you asked your Harley dealer to do this for you, any technician would be happy to oblige, and probably wouldn't charge you any more money... all the Harley techs I've ever met have been dedicated enthusiasts and bikers just like us, and they care about what they do.

Hey Del, Can’t believe you got back to me so quickly, thank you. I have a 2006 Fatboy 88 FLSTFI only done 19,300 Klms, do I need to worry about OIL Pressure Mods at this stage? I am looking into filter options ie vapor hoses from top end covers being redirected into Catch Can/filter instead of going directly into intake manifold. What’s your take on these mods? Do you have any videos on these subjects? I’ve got hundreds of questions to put to you but these will do for now. Cheers Peter
@Moonfleet413 жыл бұрын
@@peterfox6447 Breather hoses are directed in to your air box, so that the fumes and vapour can be re-burned through the engine, and then cleaned by the cat convertor, it's designed for the control of emissions, unless you've tuned your engine to create more power, you don't need to open up the breathers to run more freely, they're perfectly adequate as standard, and running them in to a catch tank is to prevent any oil drips or spray making it the road... but it serves no purpose other than that... just make sure your air box is clean and free from any oil build up and that your breather hoses are free flowing and not kinked or blocked.

Great info on the oil purge... I almost never trust a dealership to do anything if it isn't profitable to them... So purging the oil would be a loss to them, if the oil change is a fixed price, and not based on doing anything right.

Hi Del, eXcellent video that inspired me to purge the oil on my sportster 48. On a sportster things are a little different. The oil return hose is below the oil level, so if you pull it you will make a mess. I prepared a spare hose and suspended one end higher than the oil tank and connected it to the return of the tank. The oil-tank is made of plastic, you must be very careful when removing the clamp. The sportster has a weaker battery which has not enough capacity for cranking the engine when flushing the oil that collects in the sump so I ended up using the power of the engine. Fill the new oil filter with oil. I was very careful not to run out of oil, watched the oil level and the oil pressure light. I topped up the oil tank and flushed one liter until fresh oil apeared, which leaves about 1.5 liters in the oil tank. All other procedures were the same as in your video. Thanks for your great videos.
@Moonfleet417 жыл бұрын
Oh my goodness, I wished you had asked buddy - you don't do this to Sportsters! Mainly because you can't return the oil properly and there is only a fraction of the oil left in the system anyway, you may have run a litre through it, but the pipework on a Sportster holds barely a cupful of oil, if that... I wouldn't do this again my friend, a) because it's not necessary, and b) if you break that outlet pipe off the tank, they are about £200... ! Glad you got away with it, but I wouldn't prod that dog again mate...
@ck-wm9zx7 жыл бұрын
Moonfleet41 you're right there's only one cup of oil in the hoses. Breaking off the outlet pipe from the oil tank would have made up an excuse for fabricating a custom one ;-), now the return line has a removable clamp. One cup of oil stays in the sump which is located below the level of the oil pump. Another cup drips down from the rocker boxes and timing gears. 3.6 us quarts (3.4l) of oil in the system of which only 2.6l get changed. This was a part of the 20k mile service I did for the bike.

I’m not a professional. I took his advice and I’m glad I did.

Great video, modern engine with overhead cams, VVT, turbos, coolers, etc in your cage can also retain up to a quart of oil after a normal drain and refill. That remaining oil will contaminate the new oil, and increase wear, reduce viscosity and increase oxidation, varnish and sludge. Perform a second oil change after running 15 minutes and get a 99% fluid exchange in most cases. Then use the same oil for the next flush or use it in your grocery getter. WIth a full sump of clean oil, it can now do its job much better in protecting and cleaning your engine.

your plug wires need to be grounded when cranking to prevent risk of over voltage damage to the ignition coils. You can also unplug the coil. Best practice is to remove the spark plugs to ease the starter and driveline when cranking with zero oil pressure.
@MikeTomillo2 жыл бұрын
My only quibble with this is unnecessary decoupling of the spark plugs. It is simpler and faster to just engage the kill switch before cranking it. No spark is going to the plugs.
@patrickzambori4732 жыл бұрын
@@MikeTomillo Typically, the engine will not crank from the handlebar switch with the run/stop in the stop position. I will typically jump power to the starter solenoid directly if I don't want the ignition system or fuel pump doing anything when cranking.

Hi Robert, im so sorry to hear that sad story.. to have your faith in professionals tainted in that way is tragic.. There are a million, well trained, conscientious and hard working technicians / mechanics out there struggling to make a living for a blue collar wage.! and guys like you describe here, they let them all down.. it's no different to a bad chef or a bad cop.. there are always gonna be rotten apples. But don't lose faith in professionals buddy, they ain't all bad, and i know when i ran a bike shop we always worked hard to maintain a good reputation. Often the bad guy is the fat-cat CEO who charges $158 for an hours work then pays the technician $20 an hour... you won't see many mechanics with a big house and a Lexus! Keeping your bike maintained yourself is not just peace of mind, but a good way to expand the pride of ownership and have a better faith and confidence in your bike day to day, but for those harder jobs that you can't tackle, try to find a local mechanic you can trust, and if you do.. then spread the word and support them, because they need the support, it aoint a well paid job that's for sure.. Cheers buddy and take care.. Del.

Welcome to the Dark Side ! and the good news is.. that "purging" only a[[lies to the older Softail models because they are 'dry-sump' and have a separate oil tank...the purge process flushes out the oil trapped in the motor and delivery pipes... but your new Dynatail Harley has a regular Wet-eump design with a sump plug under the engine, so when you take the plug out, ALL the oil comes out, just let it drain out, replace the plug, and refill.. Take care and have lots of fun with the new Pony.!

@@Moonfleet41 ah mate thats good news but i must say i would of enjoyed doing that. Yes the 21 street bob this year has been introduced to the 114 M8 engine so should be a little lively. I will post a vid on my channel when we are out of lock down, the r18 hasn’t been ridden yet either 😂 Thank Del for the info.

Excellent information. I just changed the fluids in my Fatboy and within 10 minutes the motor oil was dirty. This explains everything. Thank you so much. Now, do I spend the money to buy more oil and do it correctly? “Thinking”………
@Moonfleet412 жыл бұрын
The purge, if thoroughly done, will see your oil clean for about 1,000 miles, but if you've already put 3 litres in, it's whether you want to waste that or not!
@marcshaner36582 жыл бұрын
Prior to performing my all fluids service, I installed an HD Oil Cooler kit, will this procedure purge that system as well? I’m hoping this is a not a dumb question as the oil cooler system doesn’t open until it thermostatically reaches 185*F. Thank you for your time.
@Moonfleet412 жыл бұрын
@@marcshaner3658 I'm not sure how your system is plumbed in Marc, usually it would become an integral part of the oil flow system and you'll purge that too, but if it does have a thermostatic valve, then you would need to drain it manually so that ti refills with the new oil..!
@marcshaner36582 жыл бұрын
@@Moonfleet41 The oil cooler is a Harley-Davidson product, it has a flange that attaches to the factory oil filter mount (which then the filter attaches to that) then supply and return lines that run through the actual cooler. I suspected the answer that you gave me. Obviously doable, but seems like a pain in the a#%. I don’t think it’s a great idea connecting and disconnecting these oil lines every time I do a service. But I can see there’s probably no way around it. Thanks again for your reply.
@marcshaner36582 жыл бұрын
May I bother with one more question? I have a 2006 Fatboy and I did find a threaded plug at the bottom of the oil pan (?) or case bottom (?). It is removable with a hex socket. Wouldn’t that drain more oil than just the plug in the frame? Again, thanks for your time.

Did the oil change on my softail today. Tried to follow your instructions but ran into some problems. Bike has been stood for a long time unused. No oil registered on the dipstick on the jiffy. So i fired the engine up briefly and then see oil register on the dipstick. Proceeded to drain the oil and follow your instructions. Problem is after installation of the new filter, turn the engine over, oil comes out the return pipe but the oil level in the tank stays constant. Topped it up again and turned the engine over until no more oil comes out the return pipe, oil tank still fairly full.At this point I decided to go no further, any idea what has happened?

Hi Del Just a news update on the Fat boy service. Engine oil purge and change proved a challenge. 1. Oil inlet pipe into the oil tank did not want to come out. Pinch clip broke but replacement found and refitted. Oil filter did not want to come off, after many different attempts it finally freed up with a clamp at the thread end of the filter to finally free it up The inlet oil pipe did not go in easily it had pinged out and was sitting above the inlet tank hole!!!!! Finally got it in but after much fiddling and squeezing. Next , clutch and drive chain adjustments.....have to wait until Sunday. Jules and drive chain adjustm ed nt

If you change your oil filter more the oil should never get dirty at all and only need to be topped off from time to time. That is what we did on engines in the oil fields that never shut down for oil changes. Just plumed a bypass on the engine oil to change the filter, replace it and open the valve back up to the filter and let her run continuously and never lost one engine due to lubrication problems, many of those oil Cat motors are still in operations as well, 20-40 years later.

I’ve read mixed reviews on this on the forums. Some guys say they only get 2 ounces of dirty oil when purging for an oil change. Others say they are able to get almost an entire quart of dirty oil out. I am swapping out regular old dino oil for full synthetic Red Line so I plan on purging my bike as best I can to avoid cross contamination. I find working on my bike is therapeutic so I don’t mind spending the extra time. I almost bought that Scavenger puck kit but I’m going to save myself $100 USD and do this method instead.
